What's that line about winning the Peace Prize? "Kill a lot of people, then stop." Henry Kissinger and Yasser Arafat were both awarded the prize on that basis.

If you think of this award as going to the office of the President of the United States rather than to Obama personally, that's basically what happened here.

And boy howdy, I thought conservatives were going nuts when Harold Pinter won the award.

While I'm baffled by Obama winning, at least this shows GOP hypocrisy. Last week they CHEERED Obama's "failure" with the Olymics, proclaiming the world had rejected him, that he was on the ropes etc. Now that he's won the Nobel...he's just world celebrity again, the world is out of touch with Americans, they like him too much, etc

They were discussing the Nobel Prize thing, and they had a guy from the Huffington Post and redstate.

Redstate dude had to account for the fact that they called the award affirmative action, which he dodged, but when Schuster brought up the point that the President himself thinks he doesn't deserve it, the guy stumbled around some kind of talking point calling people terrorists.

It was totally incoherent, the Huffington Post guy just kind of chuckled at the end.

Well, you can't expect peace without some war every now and then. Peace comes in different flavors; from the Utopian concept of world peace, to the more realistic option of stability and lessening of future conflicts. But you need to pave the ground, with explosives, before you can lay the foundation for that kind of real peace.

Has anybody in this thread mentioned that he's the first US President to go on record with "no nuclear weapons" as a goal? No other President has publicly stated that NO nukes is a good idea. Everyone else has been about limitation, non proliferation, basically maintaining the status quo.

The US and Russia have signed nuclear reduction treaties, but they're not going to reduce their stockpiles anywhere close to zero in our lifetimes, especially when Israel, China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea have weapons. it is kind of ridiculous that they would give out a peace prize every year. it makes sense for the science fields because there's always important things happening but how often is there a nelson mandela or a gandhi who is actually deserving of the peace prize?

Good christ, you're deluded. Bush brought stability to Iraq like a brick brings stability when going through a shop window. There were no Al Qaeda in Iraq before we went there. Hussein didn't like them, didn't tolerate them. Now that we've pissed everyone there off by killing innumerable civilians, Al Qaeda likely has a ripe field for their recruitment drives. It was an oppressive regime before, but it's pretty questionable about whether or not their quality of life has been improved. You know, by being killed. By their liberators.

"He" didn't do any of that, though. If anything, I'd guess that the military actions during his regime has laid the groundwork for generations of regional warfare and global terrorism. Attempting to stabilize said bad situation, however, can certainly be considered a peace effort.

You're an idiot.

Most of the people who get it are deserving of it but there's some major problems with giving one of these out every year. For one, you have to look at the long-term effects of their actions which automatically disqualifies all those politicians who stopped fighting a war to get one (I guess that would also disqualify Barack from getting one this year).

Plus it gives a bad message that you have to decide on another person deserving of it every single calendar year. Like it's a routine occurrence to have somebody who creates huge positive social changes.
