Quote
Rock Band is on its way to the iPhone! Forget everything you thought you knew about beat-matching music games on the iPhone, EA Mobileís Rock Band is by far the best in its class. We had a chance to sit down with EA Mobile at CTIA WITE 2009 to get a sneak-peek at Rock Band for iPhone, and itís looking good. The game gives you the option of playing on your own, taking a world tour (as you unlock points for new songs) or jam with up to four of your iPhone friends in person or over the internet. Linking up for 4-way multi-player mode is done over Bluetooth, so you donít even have to worry about finding a hotspot to get your jam on!

The iPhone port of Rock Band gives the gamer the same look and feel as the console version Ė graphics, gameplay and sound effects are all very familiar. Just like the console version, Rock Band for iPhone offers four different instruments to play Ė bass, guitar, drums and even vocals. The game comes loaded with 20 songs, all of them master versions from the real-life band (no cover songs). And, with in-app purchases now supported on the iPhone OS 3.0, Rock Band for iPhone will allow you buy new song packs directly from EA Mobile. How sweet is that?

[Update]
Thereís no hard launch date set, but the game is going in for AppStore approval within a week. After that, itís up to Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) to pull the trigger.

No I meant like how that Harmonix game Phase the Ipod from a few years ago supported the music on your Ipod and made custom charts.

I don't get the point of this apart from making a quick buck - Isn't the whole "fun" of music games the fact you are somewhat emulating guitar/drum/taiko drum/xylophone/turntable/theremin/whatever playing?

You can't really include the track packs - they're just DLC songs for people without Internet. AC/DC is actually the only real standalone.

If you count the Track Packs, which are designed for people who cannot buy online content and not as standalone titles, then you might as well count XBL points cards as Rock Band retail games too. Your logic is distinguished mentally-challenged.

It's pretty clear than Activision has made TWO TIMES the amount of Guitar Hero games than Harmonix/EA has with Rock Band.

Let's break it down by year and by developer. You're including Harmonix's own work in Activision's list:

2005:
Guitar Hero 1(HMX)

2006:
Guitar Hero II PS2 (HMX)

2007:
Guitar Hero II 360 (HMX)
Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s (HMX)
Rock Band 1 (HMX)

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (NSFT)

2008:
Rock Band Track Pack Vol. 1 (HMX)
Rock Band Track Pack Vol. 2 (HMX)
Rock Band AC/DC Track Pack (HMX)

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (NSFT)
Guitar Hero World Tour (NSFT)

2009:
Rock Band Classic Rock Track Pack(HMX)
Rock Band Country Track Pack (HMX)
Rock Band Metal Track Pack (HMX)
Lego Rock Band (HMX/Warner)
The Beatles: Rock Band (HMX)

Guitar Hero: Smash Hits (NSFT/Beenox)
Guitar Hero: Metallica (NSFT)
Guitar Hero 5 (NSFT)
Guitar Hero Van Halen (NSFT/?)
Band Hero (NSFT)

If you count handhelds, I really don't.... but:

2008:
Guitar Hero On Tour (VV)
Guitar Hero On Tour Decades (VV)

2009:
Rock Band Unplugged (HMX/?)
Lego Rock Band DS (HMX)

Guitar Hero On Tour Modern Hits(NSFT)
Band Hero DS (NSFT)

As you can tell, once you take out the year lead of handheld releases, MTV Games and Activision are releasing nearly equal games at the same pace. To the average consumer they're virtually the same, except Activision's track packs are more glorified and more gimped in terms of 'platform.'

DJ Hero and cellphone shit doesn't count, just like I wouldn't count Amplitude or FreQuency. Both companies are doing mobile games and spreading it around. Rock Band is on Verizon and iPhone. Guitar Hero is on a mess of others.

I'd be willing to concede that, but to include the Track Packs, which are not meant as standalone titles (and received almost no advertising) is pretty disingenuous. The Metallica, Van Halen and Aerosmith games were all built up as standalone games, as were The Beatles - they're not glorified track packs.

Also, how does DJ Hero and cell phone games not count? Just because it's not convenient to list?

Well, the cellphone games are virtually equal, if you consider each version is just one phone platform that it is on. And I don't really believe in cellphone gaming, but in 1 week we got Rock Band Mobile and iPhone Rock Band, but are they really different games? One is on the iPhone and one is on Verizon phones. Same with the GH mess. I hate mobile platforms.

As for DJ Hero, it's a new instrument that kinda supports the guitar on 1/10th of the songs as a gimmick. It's a new franchise in its own right.

But what are we arguing in the end, SKUs released or advertising presence? How much shelf space the track packs take up at a Gamestop (A lot) or how often we see the stupid GH commercial with "Old Time Rock'n Roll?"

What about retail space taken up?

Both of them have branded hats, boxers, shirts and sweat pants sold at Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart. They both fill the stores with a plethora of fake instruments. RB just took the cake releasing 2 different full instrument bundles for TBRB, and 2 additional stand-alone guitars.

At least Lego Rock Band doesn't have a bundle, while Band Hero does. GH5 was standalone and w/guitar only. Band Hero is Guitar/Drums/Mic or Standalone.

Plus Madcatz and Ion have filled the accessories section with the Ion Drum Rocker, plenty of branded RB2 guitars and a whole host of other junk, far outstripping any merchandising Guitar Hero has. Not to mention the stupid 3D figure printing shit.

On the other hand DJ Hero has the fucking outrageous cost AND the even more stupid-expensive Jay-Z/Em edition that's $200 for ONE CONTROLLER AND A STAND.

In the end, it's all a mess.
Hopefully next year will be more toned down. We knew about this year being a mess back in 2008. All I hear about forthcoming in 2010 is Smash Hits 2 and GH PSP, aside from the expected sequels.

So what is milking? Releasing individual titles that each demand the player play the game? What's your take on Singstar? That releases shit constantly, but you don't have to buy them all. And the band games are dedicated, so if you don't like Metallica, no skin off my back. They are track packs, just stand alone. And the track packs have achievements, just not full achievements like Metallica/Aerosmith. However, they scale in price. 20 songs for $30 versus 45 for $60.

Okay, Methodis, if you can't recognize the difference between a disc that does not have World Tour (but rather a "career mode" consisting of four or five playlist stages), no band creation, character selection, venue selection or any other things that define a Rock Band single player game and a Guitar Hero disc that has a completely expanded single player game with a storyline, online play, etc... you're distinguished mentally-challenged.

So it takes as much time to create a Track Pack disc that just includes DLC songs and runs on a barebones Rock Band engine, with just Quick Play and a four-stage career mode, as Guitar Hero games that have to create new character models of the cover bands, completely new stages, storylines, expanded modes and incorporate songs not developed for the main game, but rather a completely separate disc?

No, I contend there's a big difference between releasing discs full of DLC songs at the retail channel for people cannot download them, and creating entirely new games.

The Track Packs don't exist to make the NPD or anything, they'll just an additional revenue stream for people who cannot download them. If Activision did the same thing, I would not count that towards the Guitar Hero series.

But even something like Greatest Hits, which took songs from previous games, was built as a completely new standalone title (and charged full fucking price, no less). And they pump these things out on a basis that surpasses EA.

So while we're now up to 11 Guitar Hero console games (12 including DJ Hero), 3 portable Guitar Hero games and 4 mobile Guitar Hero games, there are just 4 Rock Band console games, 1 portable Rock Band game 2 mobile Rock Back games.

Come the fuck on.

Look, I think it's obvious from the complete lack of gameplay modes or additional content and the reduced MSRP, that the Track Packs are supposed to be integrated into the actual Rock Band games - they constitute as supplemental discs at best.

If you can't wrap your head around that versus Activision's Guitar Hero games that are intended to be played as standalone titles and marked up at full MSRP, then you're functionally distinguished mentally-challenged.

Even if you include only Activision published Guitar Hero titles, you're 16 (17 including DJ Hero) Guitar Hero games over a three year span versus 7 total Rock Band titles over a two year span.

If you want to compare the last two years, it's still 15 Guitar Hero titles versus 7 Rock Band titles.

Five of those Rock Band titles came out this year, and only two were for consoles - the rest were for handhelds or separate mobile platforms.

Developer resources for charting the notes? Yes.
Developer resources in terms of code, art, hardware checks, UI flow, game behavior/planning, and basically everything else about making a game? No. The track packs are based on a branch of the main game's trunk, and only support a limited subset of gameplay (no item/fan/money collection, no online, no venue unlocks, etc.)

So, rocket science, are you working in legal, QA, or charting? Because you clearly no shit-all about dev.

So they just pull those track packs out of thin air eh? The fucking songs themselves have to be charted. That in itself takes as much time as it does to chart a GH song if not more.

Also you do know that the track packs can be played as stand alone games right? I believe that in itself means they should count as full releases, especially since some of them include exclusive songs.

And what I meant was that most of the songs in GH:Shits, GH:M, GH:VH etc etc are already done in teh GH:WT or GH:5 engine, so it DOES take about the same amount of time as a track pack.

Also, the early track packs don't export on Wii and NONE do on PS2. So nyah! QED

Isn't that more or less a technical/licensing reason? They're still not meant as standalone titles for either system, but considering neither had DLC, Quick Play with new songs beats nothing.

Looks interesting....watching the videos, controls seem ok.

Is this virtually a straight port of the first red alert?

Huh? "if not more" - How could charting take more time for a track pack than for any song in the initial game?

"full release" - Define your terms. The track packs come out at about 30 bucks, the main game costs 60. FWIW: Buying DLC versions of each of the songs at 2 dollars each, with 18 songs per pack is 36 bucks; it costs 20% more to buy the digital version than the disc version.

In the end, you have a content pack that costs half of what the main game costs, supports limited standalone play. And you're calling it a "full release."

Are you also thinking that the "Tales from Liberty City" disc for GTA IV, which supports standalone play without the original GTA IV disk, is also a discounted price compared to buying the (non-Greatest Hits release) main game?  Do you think that Rockstar put the same amount of effort into those Tales as they did the development of GTA IV?

No. Sweet Christ, no. There's nothing that can match the amount of man-hours  on GTA IV

It's the same scenario between the Track Packs and Tales from Liberty City, but MyNameIsMud seems to think the track packs are full releases, on par and to be counted alongside the full-price GH titles like Aerosmith and Metallica and Smash Hits that Activision has been pumping out. :smh

Look at the screens. This isn't a port.
