take my cousin for example. he can understand everything that you say, its just that he cant express himself verbally like you or i can, he is obsessed with certain movies and movies in general and carries a backpack full of toys (he just turned 18 $:-\$ ) wherever he goes, but thats the extent of his eccentricities.

he's not a highly functional autistic kid but he's not nearly the worst either, i heard some girl in his special class had to wear gloves all the time because she'd scratch people, along with other kids who's autism is anti social

much to his delight he was on form that day, even though there were only four people in line

tbh, a habit like this doesn't seem especially odd for someone who is/was an industrial designer. it probably helps to be constantly reinforcing your intuition about dimensions, etc.

My grandpa guesses the weight of stuff too. He's 89 and can guess the weight of some one with in a few pounds. It's really freaky. Though he only does this when he is asked too.
