Shigeru Miyamoto and the Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata chat about Wii Fit Plus, and Miyamoto discusses an odd fixation he has - guessing the length and weight of certain things. It's why he carries a tape measure. For real.

For instance, I might guess that the table in front of us is about 1.2 metres long. Then I'd actually measure it with the measuring tape to check. If I got it right, I'd think: "I'm on form today!"

yeah not all autistic people are like this, i blame google

take my cousin for example.  he can understand everything that you say, its just that he cant express himself verbally like you or i can, he is obsessed with certain movies and movies in general and carries a backpack full of toys (he just turned 18 :-\) wherever he goes, but thats the extent of his eccentricities.

he's not a highly functional autistic kid but he's not nearly the worst either, i heard some girl in his special class had to wear gloves all the time because she'd scratch people, along with other kids who's autism is anti social :(

tl;dr the internet is full of bullshit, which im sure you all got your information from, not every autistic person avoids eye contact and has obsessive compulsive disorder along with anti social behavior ::), some are pretty cool, just immature 8)

miyamoto went to one of the lines for the wii launch and guessed the combined weight to be two tons

much to his delight he was on form that day, even though there were only four people in line

he then whistled out a tune on a slide ruler and skipped back to his cage at nintendo headquarters

When did he start carrying this tape measure?  All his life?  In the past few months when he decided to invent a new quirk about himself?

Considering how he tried to throw his legacy under the bus with Wii Music, inventing this new quirk is possible and probable.

tbh, a habit like this doesn't seem especially odd for someone who is/was an industrial designer.  it probably helps to be constantly reinforcing your intuition about dimensions, etc.

guys, i'm pretty sure he has ocd not autism.  i think the important part is that his day is determined by how accurate his guess is.  on top of that i've never seen an autistic kid/adult communicate thier strange behavior in any intelligable way.  i could be off though.  it's been a long time and i'm not a proffesional.

Now, Miyamoto-san, I believe I'm right in saying that you were working on three titles at the same time: Wii Sports Resort9, Wii Fit Plus which we have been discussing today and, in addition, New Super Mario Bros. Wii10.

Miyamoto:
Out of those three titles, the one which went most smoothly was Wii Fit Plus.

Iwata:
I suppose that would be because you had a clear vision from the start of what needed to be done to improve the software.

Miyamoto:
Yes, that's right. I could see what I wanted to do right from the start, and thanks to that, I was able to devote my energy to New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Wow, he devoted his energy to two non-games and a rehash.  Take it easy there, Shiggers- don't want you to strain your creative muscle, which judging from your output the last decade probably resides squarely in your ass.
