Quote
LOS ANGELES-- An immigrant rights group has asked Target stores to stop selling an illegal alien costume they describe as "offensive" to immigrants and "ignorant."

The costume, sold on Target's web site, features a mask of an extraterrestrial being, wearing an orange jumpsuit with "illegal Alien" written on it, and a "green card" accessory.

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, says she emailed Target Headquarters on Friday, calling the costume "distasteful, mean-spirited, and ignorant of social stigmas and current debate on immigration reform."

Many Target customers have given the costume the lowest product rating possible on the site-- 1 of 5 stars-- and have expressed their distaste in the "guest review" section.

"The costume is a sick sign of the times we are living in in this country where those who are not 'people like us' might as well be from another planet and are considered less than human. I am surprised Target would promote such a mentality," one customer wrote on the website.

Target spokesman Joshua Thomas says the company will be removing the costume from the site after receiving several complaints.

According to Thomas, the store never intended to sell the outfit and only included it in its online Halloween offerings by mistake.

Some customers say they will refuse to shop at Target Stores until the costume is removed from the site and an apology is issued. Others call the costume "funny" and say the offended parties should "lighten up."

"This has nothing to do with immigrants," another customer wrote, "Only the illegal criminals from Mars that entered the US without doing it the correct way."

Target started getting complaints Thursday afternoon, Thomas said, but the costume was still online Friday evening. Target's website is managed by Amazon.com, and Thomas said it could take as long as 48 hours to take it down.

I sooooooooooooooo want to buy one. Only $30

I don't understand the uproar.

Granted, here in California, illegal immigrants are a problem, but this is a play on words. It's not an alien in a sombrero outside of Home Depot.

Not entirely sure what's funnier.  This costume, or the fact that there's an Illegal Aliens Rights Group.

Whether you like it or not, they are a significant part of our country, economy and culture. While they do come from everywhere, horrible crap going down in Mexico is the primary motivator. Can you imagine risking YOUR life to leave to another country to provide for your family back home?

They need at least some bit of rights and protection as they're a symptom of a larger problem.

No they don't. They need to be round up in vans and taken back to the border. But then the Illegal Aliens Rights Groups get all uppity and defend the lawbreakers.

If they wanted to make a better life for themselves, they should have gone through it the normal way like most immigrants to the US did.

Jumping a fence and leaching off the bankrupt CA system is not the way to do it.

So if someone walks off the street, opens your front door, goes to your fidge and starts to eat all your food; you'd let them?

I don't think that's analogous to the problem of illegal immigration. It would be impossible to "round them up" in buses and take them to the border, not to mention messy, disgusting, and embarrassing for the United States.

Fix the problem by fixing the citizenship process. Those who are here already should be given the chance to become citizens, fined, and sent to the  back of the line so those who tried to come here legally get in first.

Stick to Disney and other nostalgic childhood outlets, you embarrass yourself with everything else

Um, ICE in LA WAS rounding them up in buses. They'd go into areas known to have a large illegal population, load them into mini-vans, and take them down to the boarder for deportation. That went on for about a week before the Illegal Rights distinguished mentally-challenged fellows threw a fucking fit.

And it is analogous. Educate yourself on what's going on in CA, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. They jump the fence, find someone to give them a fake SS# so they can benefit for the system, but don't pay into it. It's the same as someone walking into your house, eating all your food, and not paying you for it.

Actually half the illegals are here on expired visas.  So they did get in legally but they didn't go back.

It's understandable and a relatively victimless crime.  I mean, I would consider buying coffee at starbucks a worse moral offense honestly.

Latinos traditionally seem to take the side of the illegal immigrants and we have a lot of latinos and illegal immigrants so it seems pretty logical that there would be a rights group formed for them.

A rights group for Latinos is understandable, Illegal aliens shouldn't have any say so at all.

It's my fault.  I was near Omaha at the time and I clearly didn't do enough.  Omaha even has a bridge that suicidal people like to jump off of (Mormon Trail Bridge)

It's not like you need a permit or anything to make a "rights group".  if you have enough energy and if you have a webhost, I'm sure you could make a homosexual martian rights group in a few days.

Especially in california, there's a lot of people standing up for illegal aliens and it makes sense that they would coordinate their efforts by making a "rights group" or facebook or orgies or whatever.  I personally just can't see what there is to get upset about the group itself getting together and organizing their stuff.  However, I am upset that they are offended by such an innocent costume.  Which for all they know is really a homo-martian.

Manabyte is such an asshole, you have no idea how hard it is for a poor mexican to get into the states the legal way as long as there are poor countries there will be illegal immigration, round them up in a fucking bus is not the answer and it sounds like something some inbred redneck would say.

The majority do pay taxes.  They're usually paying taxes to a social security number that is not theirs and thus they will never reap the benefits of it.
