Behold Torchlight, a fresh new Action RPG franchise developed by Runic Games. Torchlight is being developed in Seattle team by a veteran team composed of the designers and leads of projects like Diablo, Diablo II, Mythos, and Fate. Should work on even a piece of shit PC too.

For the same reason people aren't talking about Sacred 2. It's not Diablo 3.

That being said this seems like an updated version of Fate which is always a good thing.

Looks like they saw some screenshots of Diablo 3 and decided to make a cheap knock-off really fast.

I'll still play it though.

While there is probably some slight truth to this, they pretty much have always made Diablo knock-offs which is a bit unfair since some of these guys were involved with the original Diablo and they made Fate which this seems much more of a successor to.

Perhaps more than just "saw some screenshots"... Though so far anyone who has bailed from Blizzard and attempted to recreate the magic has fallen on their face.

Interview about the game.

http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=1210

Quote
Shack: With Torchlight being singleplayer-only, the mod tools are obviously a pretty important part of the longevity. They look fairly robust.

Peter Hu: The mod tools are what we use to create all the assets in the game.

Shack: So it's the exact same tools you use?

Peter Hu: The exact same tools. So you can obviously create levels, create quests. There's a visual scripting system, so you can create a lot of trigger points. You can create items, or your own skills. You can adjust AIs, create monsters. If you have 3D Studio Max experience, you can add in animations. You can modify textures. Whatever you want.

Shack: How easy is it to integrate that content into the game?

Peter Hu: It's pretty easy. Some people have actually already started mod sites, where you can go and pick up mods once the game is released. But in general, all the mods will exist in a folder on your computer. You can just zip that up, send it to one of your friends, they put it in the Torchlight folder and they can run the mod.

Amazing. Can't be long before someone re-creates Diablo.

Quote
it's going to be super koreary

looks like it

Quote
Peter Hu: What we're going to be doing is... a lot of first-run companies make an MMO as their first thing, and it's really tough. It's not easy. So one of the things we were hoping to do is, after this game ships, we're going to start working on an MMO. And we're looking to target that for about two years after this game. It'll be set in the same universe, same kind of playstyle, action-RPG-MMO. But instead of mostly instance, we're doing a lot more shared, big-world MMO. A lot of cool stuff. And that'll be free-to-play, free to download, item sales-based.

No it never came out here.
So, at the moment the Travis Baldree's only genre related game is FATE. Well that was a decent Diablo-clone, I guess I'll watch this one.

mythos was in a giant open beta for years, and most of us here have played it.

Apparently this game is really good.  I'm having a hard choice deciding if I should buy it the same time as I get Borderlands, or if I should hold off until they put in the multiplayer mode.

Honestly it looks exactly like Fate except with an art swap out and updated graphics to a degree.

Which is fine. I was hoping for some more actual core improvements to the gameplay formula but I'm not unhappy with what it is.

The art style is more appealing to the hardcore portion of the audience definitely because it sort of meets expectations. Fate had a more unadorned look to it.

Playing it now. Enjoyable. It's exactly what I thought. Fate reskinned to look more like World of Warcraft.

The art look is fun and enjoyable and the basic gameplay is the same enjoyable formula that's always been there.

I would recommend you buy Titan Quest (It has every feature of Torchlight and more) then which is a superior game and you can generally find for 5 to 10 dollars on sale. Not that Torchlight isn't a good game in and of itself.

It's probably not as deep as Titan Quest or Diablo 2 but its plenty deep enough for this sort of game from what I've seen so far.

The interesting thing I've noticed between this and Fate is that the story seems slightly more substantial than what was in that game which was pretty much nothing.

Also they seemed to have scaled the loot better. When you first started playing Fate you could very rapidly get some pretty good items that threw the scale off a bit imo. They seem to have re-worked that so that you have to earn your loot a little better in the early game from what I've seen so far and you don't start off getting crazy stuff.

The dog doesn't level. (He may scale somewhat based on your level. I'm not sure.) He can wear two rings and an amulet. He can learn two spells.

The fish mechanic is how you make him stronger for short periods of time.

I found the demo got boring after you reached level 3 or 4 and nothing could touch you.  Walk forward, clickclickclickclickclick (can you just have the game auto-fight everything for you?  10000s clicks is :\).  Then it got fun again at the boss who could actually touch you.

Maybe I need to try at a higher difficulty level than normal.

Normal gaming :lol

Some people here are normally skilled gaming humans!  We can't all be 100k+ gamerscore demi!!

Ideally "normal" mode in games should be balanced for the average gamer, aka. me, so I also play every game on normal the first time.  If it's too easy or too hard and I should have chosen a different difficulty level, than that's the fault of the dev.

I mean in this case I don't play this genre and the last PC looter I played was Diablo 1 and I never even got all that far.  Normal should be for sorta-genre-newbies like me!

But yeah, I'll try it again on hard.  I like the game but I'd like to have to care about what types of enemies I'm fighting and do something different to strategize against them instead of just running up to them and clicking.

I would argue Diablo and Titan Quest aren't great comparisons in and of themselves. This game was made in less than a year and costs 20 dollars. Those more ambitious games were always beyond the scope of Torchlight. I would agree that both Diablo 2 and Titan Quest are better games. I always expected them to be.

Ideally "normal" mode in games should be balanced for the average gamer, aka. me,

There is no "average" gamer.

Nothing wrong with that. I generally play games on Normal also because my goal is to have fun rather than be frustrated. If you've played lots of diablo style games Torchlight is fairly easy at Normal from what I've heard. So fans of the genre I would advise to start on hard if they want a "normal" experience.
