Macs.

Every time I think about buying a MacBook, I realize it's still not as powerful as my now year and a half old HP that I bought open box for $600.

Macs aren't too bad. I can't justify owning a normal Apple computer because I need to my computer to be productive. Netbooks and tablets seem to be made for just messing around on, so I wouldn't mind one of those by apple. But never, ever for a home computer or laptop. It's not just for games either. Just doing simple tasks on a mac, uh, aren't. It was such a breakthrough when I found that a room with PCs at the campus computer center so I could get things done on them.

The iphone/ipod touch is great though. It's even a better gaming device than a mac computer.

nope. it did for me on the 7100 RC. but on retail, everything is running great.

so pretty much all games will run on it just fine then? So I wanted to play Master of Orion 2... it'll play it just fine?

Apple design is inflexible-they have their way of presenting data and workflows and if it that method doesn't click with you, the machines/software are awful to use. It has the huge benefit of being user-friendly if you do think the same way their HCI designers think, but god help you if it doesn't.

I don't understand that at all. I was a Windows user for over ten years and got a Macbook before I left for college and it took all of three days to get accustomed to the differences.

you weren't any sort of power user, then. i have a macbook and it is still a pain to do common tasks outside of web browsing and various internet and office apps. tweaking, configuring, and file management is ugly and cumbersome, and apple buries so much useful information, especially with regards to networking. thnk god tvc has given me all the useful hotkey combinations!

why anyone would buy a macbook outside of the case aesthetic, i do not know.

What the fuck sort of tweaking, configuring, are you talking about, like, coding? For everything you can do on a Windows computer, you can learn to do on a Mac with a little bit of time to learn how.

It tells me to reboot and do it from within windows.

Rebooted and tried to upgrade from within windows. It told me to uninstall a bunch of crap and upgrade from a fresh boot.

Already annoyed.

I think I mentioned before that I had to use this mac computer most of my time in high school and a good part of college. And admittedly I haven't owned an Apple computer since 1995 and am not accustomed to all the "user friendliness" of them. But every time I had to use them to do work or just waste time between classes it was a headache.

they are required for a lot of design schools because of final cut and stuff

my school had labs with 30+ of those cinema screens on each floor, so its not like you had to buy an apple laptop to learn, but its a lot more convienient

I couldnt get System Shock 2 to run. Anachronox runs fine though

Otherwise my initial impression is that this seems much more like Vista than I thought with some of the more obvious and annoying stuff removed which I guess is the point.

I played with it most of the morning doing typical computer stuff. Seems peppier and more responsive than Vista. Somewhat better performance when doing multiple things or even simple things like having a lot of windows open.

Nothing really exceptionally flashy or revolutionary or even overly useful so far for me feature wise. Like I said earlier it just sort of feels like the way I imagined Vista was supposed to work in the first place instead of being as slow and full of confirmation props as it was.

I want to know this too. Just upgraded tonight and it was completely painless compared to past Win upgrades. Going from 95/Me to Xp was a pain.

IIRC the license only allows for one computer. There's a $150 Family Pack that allows for up to three.
