Trying to stream this screener from my PC to the downstairs basement, but MKV is not a playable file format on the 360 apparently.

mkvs are hard to stream, as far as I know. I may be wrong but one of the best ways is to change it to another file, while keeping the mkv high quality. That way the 360/ps3 can run it. But hey, I'm sure viz has a way.

This.

Did you sell yours, Wilco?  Last time I checked you haven't signed in PSN in months.

Yeah, I sold mine ages ago. I just bought a standalone Blu-ray player.

What's the easiest way to convert a MKV?

this looks the easiest way, or this: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_mkv_content_on_xbox_360.cfm but looks kinda hard.

other than ps3 media server you can also try this:

I've found this to be pretty simple after doing a little research beforehand. First if all, simply using a program like mkv2vob will produce a PS3 compatible VOB file that can be burnt to a disk, put on flash drive etc and then played directly on the PS3. The other good thing is that by doing this you will retain the 5.1 DD soundtrack.

One problem of course is that the only removable media the PS3 supports that can use files bigger that the Fat32 limit is UDF on a DVD limiting you to 4.7GB or double for dual layer.

Hope that helps.

this will really help whenever it goes out of beta testing:

And just so its clear since the name doesn't necessarily reflect it, PS3 Media Server also works on the 360.

If you have a Windows Media Center-compatible PC, set up Media Center on the 360, then use Transcode 360 to transcode the file on the fly. It works well even with big files. (although over 4.5GB creates the usual problems - you have to split it).

All that is a bit of a hassle for one file, but if you plan on doing this repeatedly it's worth setting up. I pretty much use the PS3 for that now though.

Alright, so I've created a playable MP4 for the 360, but now the 360 won't even see it?

no I will not help you watch naruto on your 360  :-\

Update.

If I rename the MP4 to AVI, it will play off of Tversity, but it still will not even show up under my shared folders on the Xbox 360.

... The MP4 itself will play off the Xbox locally, so I do not know why it won't stream or why the Xbox won't even recognize the file.

Also, Windows Media Center sucks. It's clunky and non responsive, takes forever to buffer, etc.

TVersity does the same job a lot better.

I can't get PS3 media server to recognize my PS3.

Connect 360 works perfectly, but doesn't play .MKVs...

over the 4.5gb limit? try a splitter program if so. there are many free ones at doom9.org etc.

Willco, have you tried PS3 media Server, which has been suggested several times in here? It works with 360s, and should do on-the-fly transcoding for you.

I will check it out, but I highly doubt it is better than Tversity, which has not gotten the job done in terms of transcoding. And I'm running an AMD Turion X2-64 with 4GB of ram and a ATI 3200 w/ 1GB RAM, so it's not a total slouch.

I always found Tversity to be a major pain in the ass and always had issues with it.

Wow, PS3 media server is pretty good. I take that back. I'm working on wireless to wireless, and it's better than my wired to wireless stream through WMC.
PSP

The Fake Shemp

Yeah, I think this is pretty much my solution. In light of my external being destroyed by evil voodoo, I think I'll try to resurrect a media server connected directly to the wireless router. I'll test PS3 Media Server with my laptop connected to the Ethernet tomorrow, but the wireless streaming was already promising (no skips in streaming whatsoever, and pretty smooth transcoding).
