Okay, so Borderlands has the multiplayer code of the original Rainbow 6. As a result, you need to PORT FORWARD. So, okay. I login to my router, I enter the ports to forward and it asks to me to enter the IP of the computer. I head to ipchicken.com and it says your IP is 124.199.134.xxx . But when I put this into the router I get:

Invalid IP address ! The IP and router addresses should be in the same network.

WHat's the deal? I'm hardwired into the wireless router, not going through the WiFi.

You need to set up a static IP. NAT routers assign an internal IP to each computer on the network which is separate from your publicly visible external IP (which is assigned by your ISP).

it means the ip your router has assigned to your computer, not the one given to your router. Hit Start, run, type cmd, type ipconfig, it will probably(by default unless changed) start with 192.168.1.X

that is the IP to use for port forwarding.

If you have multiple computers on the router you need static IP or it will port forward what ever computer/device that get's that IP. You ahve two choices, assign a IP to the device that is not in the DHCP table of the router, or set the DHCP server of the router to assign a IP via DHCP to a MAC address of the 360/PS3/PC. Once you know the IP of the device to forward, put that IP in the router forward table. IPCONFIG, or the network setup of the device (360,PS3) will tell you your IP. But you are best off by setting a static IP that is not in DHCP.

IPchicken got your public IP (AKA ISP) from the router, what you need to put into the router is the private IP (192.168.x.x) from the PC.

necrobump  :(

finally bit the bullet and upgraded my router (Netgear WNDR3700). getting good speed, but can't connect to torrents or steam.

I've never had to forward ports or anything before, always just used UPnP. that's not working now. I set up a static IP, but still no dice when going through the port forwarding menu of the router. looks like I set it up correctly per PF.com, but it doesn't work. this sucks. any suggestions?

My Netgear WGR614 won't forward ports either lolol. Piece of shit.

Try power cycling it to see if the changes will take effect once the router has been restarted. I dunno otherwise

You using uTorrent? The connection diagnostic the newer version has is pretty useful.

Will try those thanks. Trying to avoid calling support. Google just seems to point to dead threads or portforward.com. I was almost tempted to buy their app but the free static/dynamic ip swapper on their site failed and I just did it manually. I don't have much confidence in them.

What kind of shitty routers do you buy?

I got a T-Link ("#1 Manufacturer in China!" it says so on the box) $20 one and everything just works.

You sound like a fucking mactard, only your advice is to go out and buy a twenty dollar d-link. you didn't even give me a model number! how is that going to help me?

Anyway, I got the ports verified as 'open', torrents are a go (down anyway), but still no steam. will mess with it some more after work.

Okay, so, at this point, where do you stand?  I don't feel like re-reading the thread to find your progress.

A) have you gotten to your router's config screen?
B) have you gotten past the username/password?
C) have you found the port forwarding part of your router's config?
D) does it work now?

If no to any of these, please post a screenshot and I'll work my magic.

I really should look into the torrent thing though...my ratio will go to shit if I leave it like this...

this is like the most anticlimactic thing ever. everything is working, but I feel kinda hollow inside.  :-\

I kinda wanted that tech victory, where you are neck-deep in menus and finally find the little box you left unchecked or something. on the other hand...nevermind.
