It's Wednesday night (in the nihons, anyway), Halloweekend officially kicks off tomorrow night, what y'all doing for Halloween? I'm super excited, 4 day weekend, etc. It's going to be chaos.

Thursday night: ¥50 beers (50 CENTS OMG OMG OMG) all night, not going to my school's party because it's apparently too packed every year.

Friday night: mad shotz at my apartment then whatever

Saturday night: pre-gaming at a smaller Halloween party ($30 OPEN BAR YESSS), then heading to Roppongi for more expensive clubbing. My plan is to pregame my face off at the Halloween party so that by the time I'm heading to Roppongi ~midnight I am housed and won't have to buy $10 drinks all night for myself and my girlfriend.

Sunday: drinking at Yoyogi Park, maybe in costume?

What is everyone going as?

I'm suppose to go to a some party with a friend that's free to get into with a costume. I got no costume though and I can't think of any simple ones that I can do. I'm not wearing a full face mask or makeup. I honestly don't think that black dudes have much to choose from on Halloween.

Everyone: Make sure you get pics of your costumes!  I'm excited to see The Bore dressed up.

I'm not really sure what's going on for me.  Friday I think I'm heading to Richmond for a magic tournament (read: homoerotic exploration) with T234.  Then Saturday, I'm picking up a friend and heading to Berea to watch the first ever screening of the movie I was in, then up to Lexington to see what I can get into.  If I find a place for me and my friend to stay, or trust him to drive my car, I might get shit hammered.

I dress up as Harry Potter every year for work (the kids and staff think I look like him, go figure), but I don't think we're doing anything on Halloween. I'd hand out candy while we watch scary movies, but stupid over-protective parents don't let their kids trick-or-treat in neighborhoods anymore, they go to malls instead.  ::)

Yeah, my fear is in another generation or two, I'll be one of those old fogeys that says, "... back in my day, we used to go door to door and trick-or-treat!"

It really is disappearing from suburbia, and parents are taking their kids to malls and shopping centers. That's lame. Part of what made trick-or-treating so great was the possibility that your candy had razor blades or strychnine in it!

... did anyone die from razor blades or poison from Halloween candy? I feel like, as a child, that was a real fear. I remember parents taking their kids to x-ray their candy and stuff.

Since I live in a nice, little safe alcove with two-story houses, I'll see a modest amount of trick-or-treaters - mostly tykes. My brother is working, so a friend and I are probably going to watch movies, drink beer, carve pumpkins and hand out candy. Relatively low key affair.

When I was a little kid, the rule was we could only eat stuff that was wrapped and did not have a broken seal, so no apples and shit. I mean, get it together, would you really take an apple from a complete stranger ever? I wouldn't. My aunt is preparing for the apocalypse with the amount of candy and shit she bought, so apparently in the Chicago suburbs trick or treating is still pretty big.

Sounds pretty fucking lame.

Once you get older, Americans really let it hang loose - booze, candy and sexy costumes. It becomes a sexually charged holiday; women will do anything during that one day.

It still exists in parts of the country, and I don't think it will ever entirely disappear, but even I cay confidently say there is a significant shift from door to door trick-or-treating that most of us remember in our youth to the community organized events at malls and shopping centers.

I live in an urban village neighborhood of Seattle with lots of houses, condos and townhouses, and I know for a fact that there are tons of kids in those townhouses and condos. We've been in our house for the past two Halloweens and every year we put out jack-o-lanterns on the porch and a hanging pumpkin lantern in the front yard. Never had a single trick-or-treat'er. When we lived on top of Queen Anne hill (mega rich neighborhood), we got ONE kid all night. ONE.

Oh, I feel your pain. I saw a dramatic drop off just in the past ten years in the same area. When I was a teenager, my folks and I would go through bags of candy because of trick-or-treaters. There were so many, that I even became an entrepreneur and would take polaroids of kids on a backdrop I painted on the side of the house for money.

One yeah, I had a friend wear an executioner's mask and carry a baseball bat, and he scared so many kids that we were able to fill almost half of a trash bag full of candy left on the lawn as a result.

In the same exact area nowadays, it's considering a "good" Halloween if you get a dozen trick-or-treaters. A dozen!

Yeah, that sounds about right. It's the same thing over on this coast.

I think 9/11 and (locally) the Beltway sniper scared a lot of folks in terms of letting their kids trick-or-treat. At least, that's my guess. I really can't fathom how it is NOT safer than we were kids. I mean, I remember most of my friends went out in the surrounding neighborhoods without adult supervision, getting candy from God knows who.

This was before the Internet, we knew which neighbors were pedophiles, more secure candy, etc. Those wrappers were flimsy when I was younger.

In elementary school my buddies and I used to wander all over the north part of town where we lived getting candy, and nothing bad ever happened.

I remember the family who did a haunted house in their front yard every year, and the old lady who gave out bottles of Green River and full-sized candy bars. Good times, where have you gone?

Yeah, right when I graduated from high school, I noticed a rapid decline. I used to make elaborate trick-or-treat setups and decorate the yard. One year, I converted our entire garage into a haunted house, and had friends dress up as monsters and hide in trash cans (ready to spring out a moment's notice!).

We had music, fog, fake cobwebs, strobe lighting, etc.

Like, twenty people showed up. That was also the same year that the nearby mall really began to ramp up its trick-or-treat program.

My heart was broken, and I never put that much energy into my Halloween shenanigans since then.

Might stay in.

I've been invited to parties but they're all over the state - nearest one being an hour and a half away, farthest about five hours.  Not really sure it is worth it to drive three hours to get sloshed wearing a costume that fits uncomfortably.

The downside is that I get to miss out on the girl Halloween costumes.  I don't know who decided that Halloween should be a holiday where girls dress as skimpy as possible but whoever made this decision needs to be given the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Oh yeah, last year we only got one group of trick-or-treaters... 2 small children from the neighborhood... the year before that, there were like 3 or 4 groups... since it falls on a Sat this year, I'm hoping we at least get a few this year.
