Well fuck! Ended up looking totally different than what I imagined! They went back to the "old style" speaker holes. Hmm...

Look at the curves, the stylus, and the color. No offense is meant when I say this, but it definitely looks catered to elders (not that that is a bad thing, just saying).

Sure.  DSi is just a DS Lite with a slightly larger screen (same resolution), better speakers, two crappy little cameras, and the system also has its own storage for mini-games you can download and play.  They ditched the GBA slot though.  I never bother with the downloadable games (don't care) and the difference between the i and the Lite is not big enough that it's worth upgrading to.  I regret buying it now.  Plus mine's Japanese, so no downloadable U.S. games for me.  It's like they want me to pirate Shantae when that comes out.

I never really got into the DS, period.  I like Meteos, Tetris DS, the Ace Attorney games, and the Castlevania games, and that's about it.  I'll break it out for Perfect Prosector, and then back on the shelf it goes.

If it comes in black, I might pick one up.

I'd rather it not get any smaller than it is right now.  Why people want Nintendo and Sony to reduce the size, which typically means reducing the screen size, is beyond me.  Not like the DS graphics are cutting edge and the fact that it is mid 90s technology graphics but just a little larger to notice the flaws doesn't mean a whole lot to me.  On the other hand, I'd like to be on a larger screen.  If a good TV solution existed, I'd get that.

My DS Lite isn't broken yet, which means I have no need for a DSi, but if I was buying, I'd get this. There aren't enough portables that cater to me with my big meathooks, and that new touch pen looks comfortable.

And what's wrong with gaming on public transportation? Ain't nobody gonna take away my Panzer Tactics and Picross DS sessions on my commutes. I don't have an image to protect when I'm on an express bus.

It's the opposite of the PSP Go in terms of design.

Is this DS even going to come out in the U.S.?

It is coming out in Europe next year with the brand name DSi XL.  I would assume it would hit NA around that time too.

It is!

Not everyone wants some tiny portable with an unnecessarily reduced screen size so they fit it in their pocket.  I don't play handhelds outside of my house and without a good TV option, this is the next best thing.

As I said before, it isn't like the DS graphics are cutting edge so why does it matter if you can see slightly more pixellation at the expense of a much larger screen size?

Smaller size =/= Superior

(Not directed towards you btw, I'm just wondering why people think smaller size revisions are somehow superior, especially if means cutting down on the screen size, like the PSP Go)

the psp i own has left my house a total of four times (i think), and that was only to show it off to friends inside their homes

I agree that it's not as bad as the PSP Go, but the idea of why people are against it is mostly the same.  You expect to want new hardware when it's released thinking it's an improvement, and when it's a lateral revision rather than an improvement, people complain and ignore that the devices they've been using hasn't gone anywhere.  I feel the same way as I did with the PSP Go in that, since the Gameboy, I've bought almost every new portable hardware because they've been improvements in one sense or the other.  With both the Go and LL, this is the first time when I've felt like they're not for me, but at the same time, since they're not for me I'm upset that they aren't using those resources to release something I'd like instead.  It's unintentional greed that really doesn't amount to more a than customer not buying a product.  It's the internet.

Oh, nothing at all! I use to play my PSP constantly when I was taking the train. But this thing, this thing is so damn huge. It looks like you've retrofitted some Netbook into a game system. It just looks absurdly big for a handheld (which isn't a surprise if they are marketing it for old people to use at home).

Yeah but the difference between the larger and smaller variants are that it hits different consumer groups.  There are some people that want these things to go as small as possible, screen size be damned.  We saw this group with the GB Micro and to a lesser extent, the DS Lite and PSP Go.  There are some people that want things larger.  I skipped the DSi but I will most likely pick this one up.  I can't claim to be one of a large group waiting for a larger iteration but Nintendo will get $149 + $xxx for the games I'll buy if I get it.  This being the DS, this will still sell several million overall.

Besides, I'm not sure if those PSP and DS iterations are meant to be repurchased to be honest.  None of them really offer anything dramatically better than their previous versions and in some cases, they're much worse (PSP Go).

I don't expect much improvements for iterations other than changing the hardware so it is easier to play games on; those are more for the successor handhelds.

Eh, I guess I'll have to see this thing in action before I pass judgment.  I was considering buying a Japanese DSi so I can play the Japanese-exclusive DSi-ware games (love dem shooters) and the region-locked games, so I guess this might push me over the edge if it comes out and is actually pleasant to play.  It's definitely unexpected...

20000yen tho?  Damn!  Still cheaper than a Go tho...

They made a DS iLL? Weird.

One has to hand it to Nintendo, getting people to buy the same thing over and over again. I thought repackaging failed GameCube hardware with a new controller was genius, but they're not even splitting hairs with this kind of product: it's the same thing. Same.

Slime's right: adding the GBA functionality into this would have been epic.
