How are you supposed to deal with RROD these days?
« on: October 29, 2009, 04:41:28 PM »
I got it on my launch 360 (so november of 05).  Don't know anything about warranties, that towel thing, which systems are good to get these days or whatever.

What about hard drive/account transfer?

Your warranty has expired. The towel trick seems to be a short term, hit or miss solution.

Either get a new Arcade or enjoy the rest of the generation with your PS3.

Sell the broken one for $40 or so, then sell the PSU separately, and put the money towards an Arcade model.

ok, but what about the models? aren't there things like Jasper and whatever the fuck other models to look for? apparently Cosco has a deal where a 60 gig pro is going for $150 and an elite holiday bundle is going for $240.

Any real differences between the hardware these days? all of them have HDMI, right?

where would you sell it? and what PSU separately?

CraigsList moran. Modders and hackers and resellers love spare parts.

Jasper should certainly be in all units by now. They started appearing in units made about a year ago, first in Arcades. I can't think that they're not 100% of the line up by now (unless you're dealing with a retailer that just doesn't go through a lot of inventory, I suppose).

But if you're worried, peek at the power rating through the slot in the box that shows the barcode, manufacturing date, lot number, etc. If you see 12.1A on the 12V rail, you're golden. Again, I doubt you'll see anything differently.

Thanks

And the 360 turned on again, I put disk back in, then again it froze, things went purple and the red lights came back.

edit:  ok, now it seems to be on again...

edit 2:  now it seems to be broken again

edit 3: working again

edit 4: broken again

Why are you guys telling him to buy a new one? Would it be that bad if he sent it away to get fixed?

He'll spend more on repairs than what it's worth on a system that still may not last very long.

It's best at this point to get something new or simply do without. Either way.

What's the point? He'll have to pay for the repair, so he might as well get a new system instead of getting stuck in the loop of doomed refurbs.

Agreed.  I wish mine would die - I'd like to get a HDMI one.

It's only like $150 or so for a new Arcade. Dont you spend that much on new games? Sell your bum 360 off to some modder dork for $50.

Where can you get an arcade for $150? or are you just including the amount you'd get for your old 360??

ok

and there is no difference between video connectors, right? Arcade comes with composite cables and I don't have a spare HDMI one yet, so can I just use my launch 360 cables?

I should do this as well.

Microsoft won't repair my DVD drive on my 11/08 360.  Everything should be fine except for the drive.  Might be able to salvage a few bucks doing that.

Done.

At least so far just on the dash it seems quieter and faster, plus there is an HDMI port.  The silver trim on the DVD area is gone, but who cares.

And I thought that there was an optical audio slot on the system itself.  Do I need to keep my component cable thing plugged in as well as an HDMI cable to get HDMI video and optical audio?

If I remember right the only problem is physically fitting the bulky component plug and the HDMI cable at the same time - there's not enough room.  But you can easily remove the plastic from the component plug:

I think M$ sell a specific adaptor that fits so you can do HDMI and optical, but that's a waste of money.
