Half Minute Hero
« on: October 31, 2009, 02:23:20 PM »
well i was in the mood of writing some impressions so here they are...

So the game is divided in four modes, the first and main mode is known as hero 30 mode
hero mode plays like your usual rpg,you travel to towns, punch monsters and buy new stuff
the catch is that the game is divided in stages and in each stage you only have 30 seconds to kill the big baddie before he makes everything assplode which in turn makes the action a lot more frantic than your standard rpg

Now while 30 seconds are usualy enough to complete most of the stages, some stages are simply too big to clear (or you might not have enough time to level up properly) and as such you have the chance to reset your clock back to 30 seconds by paying a fee to the time goddess,to prevent abuse of this system, the fee increase everytime you reset the clock still monster drops tons of money so usualy it doesn't end up being a problem

what makes the game works is that every stage feature some twist or miniplot so while the core of the game remains the same (grind until you are strong enough to face the boss, reset the clock, punch boss in the face) there is a lot of stuff for you to work with, for example some stages change depending on your action (one of the stage features a burning forest,if you save the forest you go to route A but if you don't you go to route B) in a similiar manner you also get achievement and extra equipment based on what you do and what you find,it's also a pretty funny game with quite a lot of jokes (at the beginning the game ask you a yes or no question and if you say "no" the game goes like "when was the last time you were able to continue playing an rpg by answering no?") the entire mode last 30 stages but if you count the alternate route you actualy get a total of 50 stages

the second mode is known as evil lord 30,this mode play sort of like a strategic,i say "sort of" because it barely feels like one, here you control the evil lord in question and you are free to move around the map,by pressing circle, square or triangle you can summon different kind of unit,of course there is a rock-paper-scissor system where one kind of unit kick the ass of the other, pressing X tells your unit to charge in a specific direction but usualy it's better to just walk close to your enemy and starting to summon the right type which makes it very unstrategic, similiar to hero mode you only have 30 seconds to clear each stage but you can buy more time by touching barrels placed in certain points of the map

the third mode is known as princess 30 and being a shooter it's probably the most straightforward one, there is not a lot to say about this one, each of your button shots in a different direction and you try to be as fast as possible since you have a time limit of 30 seconds (altough if you run on certain carpet you can get more time) by dodging stuff that can slow you down like rough terrain and rocks

the last mode is known as knight 30 and is actualy unlocked only after finishing the first three mode, knight mode is probably the most interessing of the extra modes,in this mode you control a knight and for once you aren't against the clock but instead you have to resist for 30 seconds by protecting a wizard from monster, the idea is to gain enough time by using traps such as bombs or alternatively by using the stuff you find around as a weapon (or ramming the monster yourself,or picking the monster and throwing them against other monster),you can also pick the wizard and run away (altough you have limited stamina which get replenished as you stop running) if you get hit too much you die but the wizard can resurrect you tough if the wizard bites the dust it's game over,in later stages you also have to destroy certain bells which stop the wizard from casting his spell

as i already said the hero mode is great and of all the extra mode i really like the knight mode as it feels like a good original spin on the action RPG formula and to be fair i wish someone would make a more elaborate version of it but i'm not a fan of the other two mode, princess mode in particular barely differs between each stage but to be fair each mode is short enough that it's over before you can get annoyed by them
the entire game might also be on the easy side but otherwise i had tons of fun with it

mmm
tl;dr

nah not at all! in tower defense you just place stuff around and you wait for them to do their jobs... here you actively try to repel the invasion either by moving the wizard around or by screwing up the opposition with traps (there are bombs that stuns them or walls to block passages for a while) alternatively you can fight enemies either by simply picking up stuff around and use them for a weapon or if there is nothing to pick at all by simply ramming the enemies

I tried the two demos on PSN.  The super fast rpg one is awesome.  The Dark Lord one was alright.

I still don't know what tl;dr means.  I read it as tl = translate; dr = dead rising every time.

the game is divided in stages, everytime you start a stage you get dropped to level 1 but you keep the equipment you gained (altough you can't bring equipment that you gained on stage 2 to stage 1 because apparently that would case a time paradox) you can be done after 30 stage's but as i said some stages have alternate routes so if you count them too the total rise up to 50 stages

Is there a thread for this on XBLA? I thought so but I couldn't find it.

Anyway moving around the main map sucks and neither of the two art styles are particularly appealing. Still not sure if this is worth 800 points

Is the XBLA version a port or a new game?

The art looks like shit, is the second option like the original game?

port + updated graphics + multiplayer

i don't think i'll ever understand what's the point of upgrading graphics of game that were INTENTIONALY retro

Tried the demo. I kinda like it, seems like a nice game to relax with in between other stuff. Think I'll buy it.

This game is pretty fun. I probably should've played the PSP version for more than 5 minutes before deciding it was crap. Although it worked out for the best this time since the XBLA version is obviously better.

Ha! I just downloaded the PSP demos for this while I was going through my "actually turning on the PS3" period. Are the PSP demos significantly different from the XBLA titles?
