God of War III demo
« on: November 01, 2009, 12:32:42 AM »
Got a code, but I need to set up a new share account so I won't be able to get it going until after midnight EST. Anyway, who wants this? Do you get unlimited downloads for demos?

My plan to get a code today fell through and I won't be able to get to EB for a while, so I'm in.

I'll be up (daylight savings ftw), so I can get it and pass it on tonight.

I think you have to sign out of the account. Just sign in to your usual account and the download should still be going (in fact, the download is still going for me, lulz PSN).

PM sent, sho nuff.

Demo was nice and brutal, definitely God of War. Only issue I could see was the framerate, but they have plenty of time to work on that.

It's pretty much the same framerate as GoW1 and 2-- 60fps indoors, 25-30 outdoors.

Pretty amazing looking game!  I knew the demo would cut out right when it did and I was pissed!

yeah, it wasn't bad.  I got hit a few times, but they give you fair warning on everything that's coming.  Though the spit with the tiny holes you have to get through is kinda tough.

Finished the demo, pretty good. Too bad the big moments were spoiled on me already or I would have been impressed even more. Couldn't get the hang of swinging and jumping from those birds.

Demo was fantastic. Only gripe I had was what Tieno mentioned regarding the birds. Though I'm sure we'll be seeing a different and substantially more polished game come March. Got my monies down on the Ultimate Edition at Amazon.com already.

This rendition of God of War III is v-synced (so no tearing), and based on our playthrough across the two videos, we have an average of 36.81FPS, a low of 24FPS and a high of 56FPS.

lulz. in that case they would have been better off to cap the game at 30fps

This looks really really good but it's still the same shit you played 3/4 years ago. I had a lot of fun though(OMG Cletus), though it's a shame you still can't cancel attacks. You can't even switch to a different weapon mid attack, the attack/animation has to finish THEN it switches. I MEAN COME ON! I like the bow though, rechargeable magic bar is smart. I never found the gore to cool or "brutal" or "satisfying" , I just always though it was silly and excessive and it still is, just ramped up to the max. Definitely looking forward to it more now.

It's neat that you don't have to use the Cyclops to break the guards. You can just use the Cletus.

The lack of canceling for some of the attacks is super annoying.  Namely the L1+square move (which has the longest and most vulnerable animation in the history of video games) and other strong attacks.  Hard + God difficulty = whoops, I did a strong attack and now the AI is raping me for it.  A lot of the bosses are best to take on with only the basic light hit combos that can be cancelled and the parry move.  Just makes the game feel a bit slow
and clunky at times.

Finally got around to playing this.  Was pretty darn cool.  Gave that same EPIC feeling of HOLY SHIT THIS IS ALL STILL ONE SINGLE LEVEL that GoWII had.  Lots of cool epic shit happens along the way.  Love the graphical focus on the lighting.  When you use the head to illuminate the enemies in the pitch black it just looks so cool.  Love how Kratos collects blood on him and is soaked by the end of a battle.  The grab & ram move is really good and useful, fists are ok, I thought the PSP one had fists and they had better moves, normal weapon moves were the same but they did feel less interruptable.

The controls were my one major complaint.  In the outdoor 30fps stuff, the 30fps REALLY hurts the gameplay.  I wasn't rolling on a split second like I wanted to and everything felt unresponsive to a slight degree but enough to cause me to take more damage than I'd like.  People say GoW 1/2 never mainted 60fps either, but I dunno I always thought they felt really smooth and were in the 45-60fps since vsync was off and the games were full of tearing.  This is definitely the first time I've felt a GoW game was unresponsive.  Hopefully they can smooth it out in the year between the demo build and the retail one.

Also for the QTE stuff putting the buttons at the EDGE of the screen is a bad idea.  It's harder to notice them in the chaos and for those with overscan it's scary close to going off the screen.

Oh and the sound was SO FUCKING GOOD.  Just like Killzone 2 & Infamous, Sony 1st party games have killlller sound this gen.  Makes the epic GoW feel even more epic with all the BOOM YOUR ROOM IS SHAKING MOTHERFUCKER subs.  5.1 HQ sound will be a huge improvement for the franchise.

Overall was pleased, will purchase this here game when it comes out.

I didn't care for the demo. I thought that GoWII was too "samey", and this one seems to be even moreso. I'll still play it, but I bet Sony will continue to play it safe with this franchise

the target audience isn't looking for refinement...just more gory ways to kill stuff.  The move set has basically been the same since GOW1.

smh at you saying "epic".

Uh, I'd say the first level of GoW2 is more epic than any other action game ever made.  I mean you go through a stage with a giant thing following you around and then you CLIMB INSIDE IT AND UP IT AND OUT IT AND OMG AHHH CAN IT GET ANY BETTER!?!??!

This wasn't "as" cool, but it was on the same ground of starting in a little normal spot like any other action game then taking down gods and beasts while a giant fights and then flying up to smack them in the face.  The level design and flow in GoWII was incredible and GoWIII is more of the same design style but THAT IS A VERY GOOD THING.

GoW doesn't have the deep action mechanics of other action game franchises, but it does have fuck awesome level design and a great motiff.

Eh, that's how you play GoW games on Very Hard difficulty normally. Jab, jab, jab, roll, roll, jab, jab, jab, roll, roll, ... (no combos whatsoever) ad nauseum.

Ha ha ha

DMC absolutely demolishes this turd.

As in totally scripted exciting action with little freedom and not much depth?  Sure.

But it's not like action games were ever particularly deep until DMC came along and even since then it's only been DMC/NG and maybe Bayonetta in terms of deep technical combat systems.  GoW's action is better than most of the other traditional action games/beat 'em ups.  You get multiple weapons with ok sized move lists, magic, blocks, rolls, throws, counters.  Fights are about dodging enemy attacks with rolls and countering back with your own attacks.  It follows the action game formula fine.  It just doesn't have the AI of NG or the free-form combo ability of DMC.
