Author Topic: How fast should a new mother go back to work? (Read 2983 times)

I've got a friend who recently had a baby a month ago and she's already back at work. I find this to be extremely surprising. I'm probably just old fashioned, but I feel it is a mother's duty to be with her child for at least 6 months.

I'm asking this because I see more and more mothers going back to work relatively close to the time frame in which their newborn is born. I'm not too knowledgeable on the subject, but it interests me. I'd like the females of Evilboria to throw in their opinion as well.

Depends on her situation and if she can afford to stay home. Of course it's best if she stays home for 6 months while the child needs her attention in those early moments, but that's just not plausible sometimes. If they're broke, that bitch needs to go back to work ASAP.

it's just another symptom of a culture that increases in its demands on the american worker.

it's not different than those who work 50+ hours a week.

we strain ourselves to forfeit so much time and energy to our employers, out of a sad need to appear industrious.

well, i told my employer i want SHORTER hours, and now only work 30 hours a week.

sure, it's a cut in my pay, one that has seen a few compromises, but my state of mind is so much more at ease.

40hours/week is excessive, imo.

I love working 60-70 hours a week. My paycheck is ginormous and what else am I going to do with that time? Watch TV? Play games? Sorry, I'd rather earn money and then play games later.

money isn't everything, and i'd rather have time to focus on my writing and appreciation of life than cram almost two weeks worth of work into a 5 day schedule.

we're essentially "rent-slaves," workers forced to toil for even basic needs. there's nothing you can say to justify it, outside of betraying a greedy lack of concern for one's own health.

diablos, like i said, you make compromises, but it's more than worth it when you realize the peace of mind it affords.

well, i have all of that (not the 360, but i have no interest in a 360) without working 40 hour weeks.

so, yeah, i'm not sure where you're going with this.

i rather like coming home and not feeling exhausted, or waking up without clamoring for 10 more minutes.

along with your greed, you reveal the narrow lens through which you view society, by labeling one who cherishes time and energy as "lazy."

i work hard at what i do, but i also know that i don't want to spend most of my week working and sleeping.

the scenario described by you is emblematic of the culture my current hours are PROTESTING.

they're directly linked, as the new mother you speak of feels obligated, at the expense of her health ( physical and mental), to go back to work.

as well, in europe, maternity leaves stretch for 3 months.

in this country, the wealthiest in the world, workers feel obligated to slave away for meaningless trinkets, completely unaware of the LIFE that is passing them by.

Well France has a 35 hour work week, which they may move back to a 39 hours. The finance minister said the move increased France's debt by 100 billion Euros and the country still has a very high unemployment rate.

ever since i started my new hours, i'm more refreshed, with a renewed that did not exist.

if they ask me to return to 40+, i'll ask for higher pay -- otherwise, i'll leave.

i'm not going to slave for an HDTV and 360, like a certain proudly boasts of in this thread.

I love how you skew my words and leave out the part where I talk about "survival." If you can't survive, you're either too lazy or too stupid. And sorry, I work hard but the last two years I have traveled to 12 different countries and numerous states within the US. That IS how I want to live the rest of my life. GET A BETTER JOB, DICK.

And I don't "slave" for an HDTV and 360. I earn it, there's a difference. Slaving for it would be working 4 jobs at minimum wage. I don't do that. I like having nice things and I don't mind working for them. And the harder I work, the more I move up and the more money I make and in turn, the less I have to work in the future.

My mom went right back to work after she had me as soon as the doctors cleared her, but she was a single mom.

What do you do for work then? I am suprised you can make that much since you didn't go to college (well I am assuming since you are only 20 there is no way you could finish and have a full time job by now).

I got an associates in an unrelated field. I do corporate security. However, my employer assisted me in additional training as well that has helped me further my career.

And I don't make a lot of money by the way. But my job does afford me some unique experiences. I love it.

In the sense that they thought I was going to die and stuff, yes. Of course I have a father, everyone does, but my mom wouldn't have an abortion so he left her. I never met him and he doesn't know I exist.

One of my old managers came back to work 6 weeks after she had her baby girl.
