I hope this game outsells MW2 sooo badly!  it deserves it.  Unlike Call of Generic Bald Land Marine, Mario is actually cool and unique.  Reggie threw down the gauntlet and while he may not be right about the first few months, the COD series is sooooo frontloaded and it doesn't have the country of Nippon backing it--it's that crucial Japanese support that will launch Mario ahead in the long run because the Japanese know a good game when they see it.  I'll stand by and support my man Reggie while everyone has a COD circle jerk for the next 2 months before they get bored of it because it's just another dumb FPS.  Maybe if they had some taste, they'd appreciate a good 2D platformer with a whimsical style.  It's because of jerks like them that the 2D platformer is dying, but Nintendo understands the needs of the gamer and aren't all about money and business and stuff so they make them anyway.

:bow :bow :bow

COD games are fucking boring

whatever, it's not even about the games, it's about PR guys.  I'd rather see Reggie win instead of that jerk Bobby Kotick. Bobby is all about money and being a  jerk and Reggie doesn't care about that that much, he just wants to see a smile on my 35 year old face while I'm sitting unemployed in my mom's basement and remembering how much fun I had with Nintendo with the friends I used to have when I was 8.

he's right.  it's all about the whimsy.

Well, I've finished Modern Warfare 2. The game was quite a trainwreck.
Sorta like this one.

The best selling games of this generation are trainwrecks, confirmed.

I finally got a chance to play this..

I know a lot of people won't like the music, I do think older Mario music is better than a lot of this synthy sounding stuff, but is anyone finding it quite infectious all the same? I find myself humming the title screen theme, and the main "bwa-bwa" theme song. The main castle theme is really good: shades of the Mario World castle theme, and Zelda LTTP music.

The game shows quite a lot of invention at times. A few examples I can think of:

- freezing fish makes them float to the top of the water and become platforms, freezing a puffer fish will cause it to sink. You can use an unconscious puffer to block a pipe spewing out a stream of bubbles that would otherwise block you. Have Mario games ever played with physics / logic puzzles before? Because this one seems to

- some coins are devilishly placed so you have to have a copter power-up in a level that doesn't necessarily give you one... you have to leap almost to your death and then spin up to safety

- the game hands out 1-ups like candy, but the levels begin to get challenging and begin to take a few back as early as World 2 onwards.

- I loved the castle at the end of World 2. A true homage to the SMB castles that required a specific route

- some of the on-your-toes, wall-kicking platforming from World 2 onwards is more challenging than anything in SMW and SMB3, except maybe the likes of the World 8 airship levels or the Butter Bridge / Soda Lake type stuff. There's lots of moving platforms in this game, everything is moving, and moving in new ways. Lots of tricky jumps and bottomless pits. The enemies on the world-map can be more challenging than the Hammer Bros challenges from SMB3 too.

I'm only at the end of World 3 so far but highlights include: lift to the top of a castle that gradually gets full of Dry Bones and spiked balls, windy level + copter suit, every level that involves sliding on your belly as a penguin.

I watched that video of the final battle that was posted on NeoGAF and it looks awesome. It reminds me of Metroid or something

What look around? a lot of people are complaining at this game.

The difference is that the other people making complaints here at least seem to like *something*.  Every time you pop into a thread on here it's to rage over how much something sucks.  If you hate games so much anymore, save your blood pressure and quit playing them.

WHAT?! The music and waggling are fair points of criticism.

The music...not really, no.  It's not amazing, but it's leagues better than NSMB DS.

And the waggle controls are just there, fucking deal with it.  If it honestly bothers you to shake your hands for a miniscule of a second, jesus h christ.

From what I've read, the waggle controls are mostly annoying because I can't play with the classic controllers I have (I have the normal, SFC and CC Pro).  The wii remote sideways is uncomfortable for people with hands.  And the CC Pro is a really great controller, like, even compared to other controllers and especially for 2D games (great d-pad on the thing)

IGN - 8.9

Gamespot - 8.5

1Up - A+

Kinda funny how pretty much everyone says it's a significantly better game than NSMB DS that improves on practically every front, but still give it a lower score.

That's one of the few that gave the DS game a lower score, it got 8 from 1UP. Also, IGN gave the DS game a 9.5 and Gamespot gave it a 9. Edge and Ngamer UK also gave higher marks to the DS version.

ehh, well the game is a rehash for the majority of it.  It's just done very well so it's a lot of fun with good level design.

The only thing I don't like about the level design is too much focus on jumping to your death and propeller hating out to get a gold coin.  It's neat once or twice but they use it A LOT and I'm just not going to bother for most of them because I don't want to bring a hat in and keep it until that point only to mess up and have to go get another hat to try again.

Demi:

Gamespot:
Quote
You better bring your butt-stomping A-game to New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Like the best Mario 2D games of decades past, this game is unashamedly and deliciously challenging. It will even test the most seasoned platforming veterans

Quote
You'll need to dig deep and mine whatever experience you have with previous Mario offerings because New Super Mario Bros. Wii is by far the most challenging game in the series for many years (certainly more so than New Super Mario Bros. on the DS or Super Mario Galaxy)

Quote
The game's high difficulty may initially scare off new players

Gamesradar:
Quote
Yes, there a handful of powerfully tough areas we had to try over and over

1up:
Quote
The real strength of NSMB Wii isn't that it incorporates every great idea from 20 years of Mario games into a satisfying whole; it's that it does so in a way that's designed to entice gamers of every skill level [including demi skill]

IGN:
Quote
The game is a great challenge

Anyhow it's not super hard (I haven't died more than 3-4 times in any level so far), but it's definitely challenging if you go for all the coins.

This shows the pathetic double standard with one set of games that rehash a lot and another.

Imagine the NSMB Wii reviews if it was anything like Dynasty Warriors:

Man, all Mario does is jump around n' shit.  I'm practically pressing "A" the entire time I'm playing the game!  Plus it is the same shit over and over.  I played an ice level the last Mario game I played, why are we playing an ice level again!  Nintendo is just lazy.

Actually, aside from that Parish review, most people aren't giving it a free pass this time. I feel it's going to be similar to Twilight Princess, how any complaints about the game itself will be an extremely distant second to the fact that it doesn't 'shake things up' enough.

Parish sucks ass at games, the GnG review happened after the violent buttramming the game gave to him.

Yeah, both NSMB Wii & GnG are great.  The score variation shouldn't be that different between them.  NSBM Wii has a lot more levels though so I'd rate it higher.

GnG has better art/music though

I bought the game and finally found one of the wii remote condoms.  For some reason it was in a shoebox in my closet.

Game is fun.  I'm not about to make judgments on the first world about difficulty, but I will say it's clever how they had it be a tutorial where each level teaches you about a power/yoshi/level style.  Um, the waggle stuff is kinda worse than I thought.  Picking objects is probably the one that kills me.  In every Mario game, and even with Koopa shells in this game, you pick up and carry items by holding a button and running into it.  For some reason they have you hold 1 and waggle to pick it up.  It's just so awkward to do that, and other various moves.  In the propeller suit I accidentally activate the jump when I didn't mean to.  When you get to the first one of those scale platforms, I expected it to be like a scale, but you just tilt to move it...why? it's a lot of gimmicky stuff so far.  But I do think it's fine how they replace the spin jump moves from World using the waggle for the flowers since there are only two action buttons now.  Also, the game kinda feels really floaty for some reason.  It just takes some getting used to.  I do like that they got rid of the Mario 64 moves that were there in NSMB DS.  The music sucks, btw.

But yeah, the game is fun.
