I imagine the way you pick things up was a concession for the multiplayer component.  Players would probably pick each other up on accident if all you had to do was run into them.  Koopa shells you still grab the old fashioned way, however.

Game is fun.  I'm not about to make judgments on the first world about difficulty, but I will say it's clever how they had it be a tutorial where each level teaches you about a power/yoshi/level style.  Um, the waggle stuff is kinda worse than I thought.  Picking objects is probably the one that kills me.  In every Mario game, and even with Koopa shells in this game, you pick up and carry items by holding a button and running into it.  For some reason they have you hold 1 and waggle to pick it up.  It's just so awkward to do that, and other various moves.  In the propeller suit I accidentally activate the jump when I didn't mean to.  When you get to the first one of those scale platforms, I expected it to be like a scale, but you just tilt to move it...why? it's a lot of gimmicky stuff so far.  But I do think it's fine how they replace the spin jump moves from World using the waggle for the flowers since there are only two action buttons now.  Also, the game kinda feels really floaty for some reason.  It just takes some getting used to.  I do like that they got rid of the Mario 64 moves that were there in NSMB DS.  The music sucks, btw.

But yeah, the game is fun.

Yuck.
It's not that bad.  Waggle is very minimal in this game.  But, I would've preferred the option to map that function to Classic Controller.

Do the toads that appear in levels have a finite number or are they random?

Do you need to rescue every toad in every level for completionist purposes, or is it just for a few extra lives? I'm really enjoying this game so far, level design is a good deal more developed and challenging than the DS game, and it's got a lot of nice throwbacks to SM3 and W. Just made it to stage 4, though I have to go back and collect a few coins I missed in stages 2 and 3.

Yeah, my main complaint of course is the waggle stuff, especially picking up certain objects by pressing 1+waggle.

I don't mean to make it seem totally awful.  I say it's worse than I thought because it makes its way into your primary move set.

People look too fondly back at the old Mario games and saying how hard they were.  I'm sorry, World is not that hard.  In fact the hardest Mario game that I've played was SMB2, American version.  Nothing has been as challenging as that since.  I just sat down with World for a go real quick and got the the fourth world in about 20 minutes.  NSMBWii is tons tougher than that game.

Long jump, which wouldn't make any sense in a 2d mario game.  Triple jump and wall jump are in.  It's basically the same jump mechanics as NSMB.

At least it doesn't seem to be the case. I mean, it's not that you don't have the moves, it's just that the game hardly ever makes you use them.  I finished world 2 with all the stars and you needed to wall jump once.  Another great thing is all the stars so far deal with items found in the levels, so you don't have to go find a stupid mini-mushroom and return later.  The propeller suit is great, btw.  A bit broken compared the leaf or cape since you can super jump whenever, but it's not really a problem.  World 3 is an ice one, so I'm guessing I can try the penguin suit here.

But you've played that game before, no? I've played SMB3 and World so much that they would seem easy to me (though, World 8 SMB3 still gets me) while NSMB Wii is new for the most part.

I thought world 2 had some coin where you had to be mini-mario to get into a pipe, but there haven't been any actual small mushrooms in the levels that I've found through world 3.

If you're talking about the one behind those two barrels in that one stage, there is a mini-mushroom earlier in the level through a regular pipe.

It's only used, like, twice in the game as far as I know.  It's never a prominent power up.  Better they kept that one, though, rather than the distinguished mentally-challenged giant shroom.

Waggle required for the seesaws and the propeller hat, and picking up blocks (POW block, frozen enemies)

and the spin attack, which isn't useful unless you have the ice or fire flower because it makes you shoot in each direction.  And to jump off Yoshi.  Also, some other seesaw like operations, like the 1up game where you aim a cannon by tilting the thing.

I associate a lot about the Mario universe through what was introduced in SMB2.  The character controls, specific music tracks, certain items, Shy-guys, Birdo, etc.  It's the game that introduced the concept that Mario's environment was a character itself, not just a background.

What is the point of the spin attack?  I don't see any point in ever using it.

He means the idle spin attack, not the mid-air one.

I like the regular spin attack for jumping on a series of enemies; it gives you more air.

yes, you can reach anything at anytime.

the it is in is fairly obvious (1-3) and to get it you need to go to that hidden coin tunnel in the level, jump out to the left on yoshi, then jump off yoshi towards the right, then keep running right outside the screen and you'll find a hidden pipe.  The stage hints at it later on by showing you the top of the stage is actually a platform.

Some losers are comparing this to SMB2j in terms of difficulty. ::)

They just lack the dexterity for normal controls after years of point and/or waggling or standing on a scale.

I'm getting my copy tomorrow; Amazon is also giving $10 credits back to anyone who orders the game from them.  I used it on Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles, knocking the price down to $34.99.  LOL Gamestop.

Stoopid nitpick: Why does this game have to come in an all-red box?  It sticks out like a sore thumb next to all the other Wii titles, Metroid Prime Trilogy included.

This game isn't hard to come by extra lives.  But I have died. ALOT.  Although sometimes I'm just screwing around looking for SECRETS.  What's really wonderful is that most of the time, when there's an area that looks like you could reach with some clever platforming, it rewards you accordingly with SECRETS. Awesome.

edit: Oh, and that raft stage in the swamp world is wicked.  Its like a full assault of goombas, bombas, piranha plants, koopas, etc. raining down from the sky while you stand on a raft going down a stream of poisonous water.  I musta died like 15 times.

BN, you know you is my nukka, but from what I've played so far, much of the music is about the same as the DS, but with slightly better samples. Heck, they re-used almost every single piece of music, except the main castle theme, i.e. the only good track in the game. :(

But I'm only at world 3, so maybe it gets better. We'll see I guess.
