I want to pick it up. My backlog's huge already. Plus I went ahead and spent my Amazon credit from MW2 on Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition. Paid only 12 bucks for it. :D

who's quad-dipping?  I know I am.

I think I'll use my amazon gc from MW2 to know this down to $16.

One question-- they say it's now 60fps, but all the vids I've seen have shown it running at the same old 30fps. is that the video reducing it or did they really mean an unstable 60fps like the old ones?

YouTube limits videos to 30 fps I think. If you were watching there that might explain it.

Did they actually add pixels or just stretch the screen out? In the videos I saw it looked like the QTE prompts were ovals instead of circles.

I'm playing them for the trophies.  But amazon still hasn't shipped my copy I pre-ordered like EIGHT MONTHS AGO...wtfwtf :(  Says release date is not until tomorrow.  Since when do games release on thursdays :(

not like I have any time to play these again any time soon.  But would like to at least check out how they look.  I hate GoW, I love GoWII.  I'm curious if a 2nd play of both titles will change how I feel.

Did they actually add pixels or just stretch the screen out? In the videos I saw it looked like the QTE prompts were ovals instead of circles.

Games are native 720p or sorta half-1080p (950x1080 doubled up or something) with lots of AA and locked 60fps with no tearing.  At least that's what everyone is reporting.  The HUD and QTE prompts are stretched because they're 2d.

it's god of war, upscaled and locked at 60fps with no tearing.  Not shabby.  Only complaint is that you can't go into one game, exit, then go to another, as far as I can tell.  you have to quit and reboot the game.

The first hour of GOWII can be played on auto-pilot.  The enemies are much more aggressive at the beginning of GOWI.  The hydra fight is still one of my favorites in gaming...iirc, the game never quite reaches that peak again lol.

I love me some God of War. I loathe me some God of War II. As it turns out, that's a good turn of events. Otherwise, I would almost regret not being able to play God of War III. But now it's no loss.

just like Slime, I was interested in this but it seems half-assed. The cinematics weren't touched up, so they apparently look weird compared to the redone parts (if reviews are to be believed).

I don't see what they could have done with things like the fmvs and menus/2d interface options.  The fmvs were created at 640x480.  That's just how they're going to look.  Ninja Gaiden Sigma is the exact same.  The FMVs look worse compared to the game since they are in SD.  For the 2d stuff they'd have to make all new menus/interface/QTE command prompts and they probably didn't have that degree of artistic freedom from Sony to actually change aspects of the original games.

I dunno, the reviews I've seen make it sound like it's a pretty damn good port considering it's just an emu job with v-sync.

Not getting my copy this weekend.  Amazon says it'll arrive today since it had 2-day shipping.  When I checked the status it did arrive somewhere today!  Unfortunately it arrived on the other side of the country for some reason.  Bleh mail messups, bleh.

Jesus, this game looks fucking good.  The textures are blah, but from far away, everything looks really good.  It would have made an awesome isometric loot hunting RPG engine.  instead it's dedicated to this broken action game :lol  The enemies barely attack at all in GOW2...seems more puzzle heavy overall, too.  GOW1 might have better action, which I didn't notice until I played them side-by-side like this.

Yeah.  Got mine today and it's definitely very clean.  Still, GoW1 is super low-poly and it shows.  Some stuff still looks nice like the Hydras.  They have good textures.

Did the Hydra stage and yeah I'm still not a GoW1 fan.  The game just feels annoying.  The kick the block part sux, the hydras (and if I remember right all the GoW1 bosses) have so much life it feels like a grind whittling them down, enemy waves just keep coming.  I agree GoW1 action is more challenging since the enemies attack you more.  But I like the mainstreamed GoW2 that's about pure fun and setpieces.  Glad GoW3 feels more like GoW2 and not Jaffe's GoW.

That being said, since my memory is shit when it comes to videogame plots (see AC2 where I can't remember anything about what happened in AC1), I think I'll wait until 2 weeks before GoW3 comes out to play GoW1 -> GoW2 -> GoW3 so the story is fresh in my head.

kratos gets betrayed, yells a lot, kills stuff, yells, someone betrays him again, yells, does some elaborate puzzle to get through a gate he could easily smash through, gets betrayed, yells, kills the end boss.

repeat for part 2.  he does some polygon bitches at some point too.

i don't get the love for these games.

they really feel like action gaming for casuals.

from what i've played so far you can mash one button to win (unless you have to do a qte sequence).

tbh, offensively you can mash one button in NG or DMC or Bayonetta too and beat down enemies.  Square x 3 is a combo in all 4 games and does shitty damage in all 4.  The reason you don't do 1 simple combo the entire game is because you want to do more damage and also so they don't get repetitive.  If you watch speed run videos for all 3 games (not sure about Bayonetta; haven't seen any) you'll see that players pretty much just do the best 1-2 combos over and over.  So yeah, it's not that different.

Defensively, in GoW you still have to roll, or block, or counter to not die.  Same deal as in the other games.  The enemies are just less aggressive than NG (DMC3 enemies are about as aggressive).

If you want to talk shit about GoW compared to the real action games that's easy:
-The hit detection is not super accurate like the others
-The boss patterns are not as intricate as the others
-The combo system is not as free-form or movelist as long as the others
-There are only a few enemy types compared to the other games with a bunch; enemies don't have much of a pattern in GoW, they just kinda sit back and attack when close.

Gow games also need to:
--Add more invincible frames or cut the animation length for a bunch of moves
--Give the enemies a lot more moves.  Each one has only one or two routines.
--Get rid of that slow motion shit when you do a launch or parry.  This really kills the momentum.

but if GOW1, 2, COO, and the demo for 3 are any indication, they don't really care about making an airtight hardcore action game.  The fanbase won't care that much anyway and it'll sell gazillions of copies, so there's no incentive to.

I got this at realease and going thorugh slowly, i've never been a big fan, could never beat GoW1 but I promised myself to play these games so i'm trying. Right now i'm up to pandora temple on top of kronos. I think the most interesting thing about this collection is seeing all the tricks they used back in the day to make you go "woah" at the graphics, like using images to display dephth etc. I still did go "Woah" at the parting of the sands though. Amazing.

I disagree with you "laughing off" the story in the GoW series, ManaByte. Sorry it doesn't have such deep plot mechanics like you're the ones who actually invade the world, but the story is well put together and a great video game tale.

I like the story in GoWII & III because it's about greek mythos characters fighting mythos characters.  Also the PSP game story was neat too because it was about how the titan who holds up the world came to be.

I don't like Kratos, and I don't give 2 cents about his story, so GoW1 story is not for me.  But I do like this big Olympian vs. Titan tale they are telling in GoWII & III. It also provides a great backdrop to have mindblowing battle scenes in.

Yup, GoW games ARE amazing.

So many OMG moments, so many hard fights.

The hardest parts of GoW1:
- Hades

The hardest parts of GoW2:
- the winding down path right before the final Sister of Fate fight
- the last boss battle

Both games have some amazing environments (GoW1 - Pandora's Temple, GoW2 - Atlas, Steeds of Time).

After playing the demo on a 52" screen I cannot fucking wait for GoW3 :hyper :hyper :hyper

I personally thought GOW was harder. The bossfights, enemies and the puzzles were overall harder imo.

And yeah, GOW3 will be amazing. :bow

I tried this the other day on a 60" 1080p plasma and GoWII looked incredible.  They did a really nice job on the visual touchup.  GoWI still looks dated though.  Like playing an early PS2 gen console port to PC.

Should I just skip it and start GoW2?

Oh damn, I just spotted the Star of Bethlehem thing last night. So, taking a guess here, Kratos is God, bangs Mary, then tries to kill his own son Jesus, who defies Kratos by rising from the dead and tricking a bunch of dudes into labeling him the God of Peace, only to result in some pretty damned serious warring later on. So Jesus is the new God of War.

Nifty.

I'd say that opening hour of God of War II is better than the whole of God of War, but you will still be fighting a lot of legionnaires between encounters with bigger creatures. The low points of the game for me were the moments where I had to active a switch in one place and hurry hurry to some other point before time ran out. But there is some really sweet stuff there for sure, and at least you don't have to mash buttons to open chests.

I don't mind fighting lots of dudes. It's when I've already killed 6 dudes, or 3 big dudes, and more of them just keep coming and coming well past the point where I am bored with the locale and the opponents. Does GOW2 at least move along?

Yeah, more so than GOW I think. There are a few moments where they just pour it on like that, but I never felt stuck. I'll have to play GOW to compare it, I lost the will to play that after I got to that damned desert.

I think when I played it yhears ago I got up to the part right after you get the sword, where they make 10,000 skeletons fall on you and you have to run away from a moving wall, or something.

I think I would be more receptive to this sort of gameplay if Nintendo hadn't just broken my gaming fuse.
