Windows 7 64bit Question

It seems as though I have successfully upgraded from 32 bit XP to 64 bit Windows 7, but I have a question. There are two "Program Files" folders, with one of them also reading "(x86)". After a bit of searching, I see that the x86 folder is for 32 bit programs (or something?). If I want a program to run in 64bit, do I have to specify which folder to install it in or will Windows pick the correct directory?

An x32 program is still going to be 32 bit no matter what folder it is put in.

I was actually concerned about the opposite: installing a 64bit optimized program in the x86 folder, thus negating any of the 64bit benefits.

Windows will pick the correct directory for you. Note that in most cases the installers for 32 and 64-bit versions are different.

just try to get 64bit versions of your favorite programs if they exist, like 7zip or microsoft security essentials for me. and if no 64bit exist (like CCCP) no worries, it will go to the x86 folder and will work as intended.

you don't need 64bit browsers though, most plugins/addons are 32bit like flash which is everywhere.

I was mostly concerned about games. Speaking of MS Security Essentials, how is it? I installed it today after I had been using McAfee for years (which I hated because it was bloated, would destroy bandwidth when downloading updates, and slow my system when installing them).

Do any sort of virtual desktop applications work in Windows 7?  I want to organize my 7 partition in a similar way to my Snow Leopard one, and I'm unfamiliar with virtual desktop applications.

the folder name does not matter. It's just like installing someing into /weeabo/ instead of /Program Files/. A x64 program will only run in a x64 environ.

and might i add that W7 x64 driver support from nVidia sucks ass. I'm afraid to see game performance if its already making limewire look/act distinguished mentally-challenged

My favorite bit is that 64-bit globally shared DLLs are in "system32" while 32-bit globally shared DLLs are in "SysWOW64"
