So, anyone going to try out Streaming Netflix for PS3?

Evidently it's through BD-Live, and it's not integrated into the hardware. Still, worth a shot since I only have a silver account right now.

I ordered the disc from Netflix even though I don't own a PS3 and gave it to my brother and his family who does have one. I'm curious to see how he likes it since I love it on the 360.

do they have regular mail netflix in Japan?  or do people still use video stores there.  Maybe some other kind of TV streaming service?   Would suck if all that super advanced broadband tech went to waste.

my internets isn't fast enough to gets the HD stuff, but the video quality I am getting is surprisingly good.  It looks much better on my TV then my PC screen, that's for darn sure.  I also very much like that there's five Dolph Lundgren movies available for streaming, thata'll make my weekend a bit nicer.

They have Discas service, which is similar to Netflix, but not nearly as good and has a limit of how much you can rent in a month.  For streaming, it's really not that popular here, there's services like Gyao but it's nothing compared to what you can get in the States.

When the 360 Netflix service wasn't IP-blocked, it was amazing, I was watching shit on a daily basis.  It was truly a tragic day when they killed it.

I think Tsutaya or GEO is launching a mail service as well. I bet competition leads to better implementation sometime soon.

I'd no idea that the Netflix service was ever, EVER non-IP-blocked. When I first chose to buy a US 360, it was because they'd announced the video download service. I knew they had locked stuff to region-of-account before, and locked to region-of-console, so I thought that was enough. iTunes locks to region of account, iTunes deals with video, I figured it was safe.  :'(

After downloading a few free shows and still trying to work out how to buy enough points for frequent rentals, one day I couldn't download anything new. This was before Netflix IIRC, so I'm stunned that there was ever a time that it worked.

I'm sure Japan will cripple the discas service because they're seeing how Netflix has annihilated video rental stores.

Then again, if there's any group that loves ignoring progress in other nations, it's Japanese business

Certain titles are available to watch in HD on your Netflix ready device. In order to watch in HD you need:

    * A HD TV and component or HDMI connection from your Netflix ready device to your TV
    * A high-speed internet connection at time of playback (typically 5 Mbps or higher)

Yeah, Discas is the Tsutaya service.  I don't know if GEO is going to be starting something similar, but I doubt it would be much better.  I don't live that far from a Tsutaya so it's just easier for me to go there instead of dealing with their annoying rules for the service.  I guess it would be more useful for people who live out in the sticks.

I've heard that Sony is opening a PSN media store for Japan though, about damn time.  Microsoft also mentioned it in the past but that was awhile ago and we haven't seen anything yet.  Oddly enough, the Wii already has a couple of streaming video services available in Japan, although they all suck.

oh shit, yeah, I almost forgot.  Would it ever to be possible to get maximum visual output or even an HD stream reguardless of your current speed?  You know, just by letting the stream load for like 10-30 minutes ahead of time instead of just depending on your pretty decent but not godly internet speed for image quality.

That would be fucking awesome.

I got my Netflix disc in the mail yesterday and ran through it. Pretty awesome for a free service but it's a slight letdown when compared to the 360's Netflix application. Fundamentally it performs the same exact functions but it feels a bit clunky when navigating through the menus and the UI is lacking. Streaming content also appears slightly worse than on the 360, particularly HD content has far less definition. However, I'm positive that has more to do with my 360 utilizing the new Wireless N adapter and getting better speeds then anything else. Overall it's a great solution to getting Netflix on the PS3 but I'll be sticking to the 360 for this service.

Wish it came in an actual box instead of a paper sleeve but free is free.

Are you liking the new Wireless /n adapter? I'm torn on buying one... they're pricey, but my 360 has the old adapter, and my house is all 802.11n except for the consoles.

I did a frame-by-frame comparison and the image quality seems identical on each platform. Navigation on PS3 is clunkier though.

According to the PSN survey; No Disc PSN streaming is part of the subscription plan.

No disc streaming = $69.99 a year

It's no disc streaming + a bunch of other "perks"

which is still fairly dumb, but it's like saying Xbox Gold only lets you play online.

XBL Gold has online play, which is the big draw.

PSN Premium doesn't have such a draw since online play is already free.

again, you are listing individual parts of the package to make it seem worse.  It's also something that hasn't been finalized and was simply part of a survey.

you're even awful at spinning this since you could have simply said "there is a one in four chance that this wouldn't require a disk to play".

I'm sure if Sony had paid subscribers they had to attend too they would make sure things like that don't happen, but who cares, it's free.

Considering the fact that Microsoft has been much more successful selling its online platform, a lot of people care. I gladly pay a monthly fee for a service that proactively bans glitchers and cheaters, unlike the crap that is allowed to go unchecked on PSN.

Not to mention, the Demonware servers went down the first day, for almost an entire day in many regions - on launch day! If I was one of the people that paid $60 MSRP for a game and could not play online the moment I open the case, I'd be furious.

PSN is free, but you get what you pay for. A pretty crummy service.

... The sad thing is, I was hoping Sony would really flesh it out as a free competitor to Microsoft, so that Xbox Live would eventually be free. But it looks like that's not going to happen.

I don't know how you can disagree. The only objectively superior selling point PSN has over XBL is that it's free. Nobody has to pay for Xbox Live, it is a subscription - and a popular one at that.

I mean, let's face facts. People are purchasing the Xbox 360 for its online service, which they then have to pay for. So if people are willing to buy a console and then buy a membership, rather than just purchase a PlayStation 3 and play online out of the box, shouldn't that tell you something?

Even the most ardent Sony fanboys usually concede Microsoft has obliterated Sony in terms of its online platform.

I just don't agree with paying to play a full priced game online. I also beg to differ that everyone bought a 360 just for online play; I bought it because it got RB DLC a few days earlier and because RB2 came out earlier on it. People also bought the 360 because it was $300 cheaper and out a year earlier. I don't buy the "they bought it for the superior online paying experience". I love my 360, I do, I just can't side with a system of not being able to play some features on a game unless I shell out $7 a month.

That's why I think the PS3, although not as solid as a paid service, is a great console because I am not limited in what I can do in my video games unless I pony out more money. If it means I save $7 a month to wait a hour or a day, I don't see why that's a big problem at all.

Would I love cross game chat and all that stuff in my PS3? Sure. Do I really need it to enjoy a video game? No. Would I rather have all the options of a game available to me whenever or forever even if I go broke? Yes. To me, that's why the PS3 has the superior online model.

I was of the same opinion/hope and find it quite comical that Sony is planning to restructure their online policy to include a pay model.

That's not really fair to say; it's still free, and most of the stuff you get with the rumored premium service is stuff no other console offers, like 1 hour trials (which is the reason places like Big Fish are popular), extended warranty, expanded and higher priority for customer service, and alot of stuff.

I think the new point will be "Why isn't Microsoft giving me an extended warranty, priority over silver members on customer service and all this good stuff if I pay the same price?".

Going really far off the topic here, but I think it's sort of weird that, while MS has excelled in the community connection bits, their own online games are really limited in terms of for example player count. It's like a big party in a tenement or something. Sony for its part regularly pushes for and pulls off high player counts, but it's missing the community factor that would really make that worthwhile.

Xstation, please.

Nearly all 360 games are hosted by players themselves and not a server. The lower player counts in games is due to that or at least must support player hosting.

That doesn't exactly make it any better, though. If we had the community features and some ambitious games, it would feel better paying for the service. Whether PSN can measure up to XBL at its own game is less important than the fact that it can do some stuff that seems alien to the pay service. That doesn't make it better or even, and the PSN service is clearly lacking in community features, but if we are going to talk about online gaming, then it's a real consideration. To some.

That's a fair point.

Anyways, I don't pay for XBL so it's all a moot point to me. :smug
Huh. Can I chat with you when you're logged in then? I'm still not clear on the rules -- it doesn't make sense to me that you can get free video and voicechat in any number of computer applications, but I know that at least one-to-one video connection is not supported unless all participants are Gold. I turned on another controller with a headset, logged in my wife's Silver account, and it ended my fucking video chat the other day.

It's linking accounts. Although I do not like the execution of it on the Xbox 360, I do like that I can download any video I have purchased ANYWHERE (desktop, netbook, Xbox, etc.) by logging into my Zune account. It's like Steam for videos, which is probably the best idea ever.

Yeah, but I'm not sure if you can add new films to your instant queue through the PS3 solution. That means you'd have to access their account online via a PC or notebook, and I don't know how comfortable they are with you having complete access of their account.

I mean, Jesus, you watch maybe more films than I do. Just spend the $8.99 a month and get your own account! Best money you ever spent!

I don't mind the idea, but I wish it was separate from the rest of the stuff. Having to launch what feels like a separate application just to watch some downloaded trailers is less than smooth. Feels like operating a new computer using only the bloatware, or something.

Yeah, but I'm not sure if you can add new films to your instant queue through the PS3 solution.

It's the same as the 360 version, gives you a few categories with new movies, but it's a lot less snappy.

I mean, Jesus, you watch maybe more films than I do. Just spend the $8.99 a month and get your own account! Best money you ever spent!

I've thought about getting Netflix, but we see about 95% of everything in the theater and rarely ever rent movies.

I'd still recommend it. Their back catalog is insane.
