Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
« on: November 18, 2009, 03:30:48 PM »
I just played through the first level; brief impressions:

Compared to 2007's Umbrella Chronicles, Darkside has some noticeable improvements that have been made.  The aiming controls are more precise, and the hitboxes seem to have been expanded a bit to make things a little less frustrating (UC had some notoriously small hitboxes at times), despite the "shaky cam" view that's in effect during much of the game play.  There are now multiple paths you can take through levels, a better ranking/score system (with internet rankings available), and weapon upgrading like in RE4/RE5.  You start out in a remote South American village, playing as either Leon S. Kennedy or Jack Krauser in 2002.  The graphics are pretty good, and reminded me a lot of what RE5 would look like if it were downscaled for the Wii.  After this stage, Krauser wants to know about Leon's past experiences with zombies (Gee, I wonder why?), and the game flashes back to the Resident Evil 2 and Code: Veronica storylines.  I'm pretty impressed with The Darkside Chronicles so far.  It seems like Cavia has addressed all the issues from Umbrella Chronicles.  Resident Evil fans should enjoy this game.

I liked UC, despite its flaws. Just from that video it looks like Darkside Chronicles is a lot better, especially with how the camera moves. I'm not sure when I'll get around to playing it though...

I need to finish Umbrella Chronicles; only played it for a few hours and finished the RE0 campaign.  I started playing it again last night, doing Rebecca's mission for RE1, and kept dying so fast.  It was frustrating with some of the control/aiming issues I was having.  The Darkside Chronicles is MUCH better in that regard.

Something kinda disturbing I noticed and yet perhaps unsurprising: the female zombies have breast bounce.

...

Thanks for the impressions! If you've played Dead Space: Extraction would you rate this as better or worse?

I haven't played Extraction.  I still haven't played the original Dead Space yet!   :-[

UC is the worst game I bought for Wii.  It's probably the worst lightgun game I've ever played.  Absolute Cavia PoS that went on to sell a million copies because Wiitards are exactly that.

I'll never give this series another shot.  EVER.  First one was that bad.  30 hour lightgun game?!  Go piss off, no one wants that.  Lightgun games should be fun arcade short experiences.  Grinding in a lightgun game is the most distinguished mentally-challenged idea ever.  Such a waste of money.

Even despite them fixing a ton of issues from the original (so it's good now), you definitely don't want to check this out.  It's still a long game; the IGN review said something like 12 hours.  I wouldn't have gotten it if I wasn't a Resident Evil fanboy; an arcade lightgun shooter this is NOT.

I'd kill for a House of the Dead style romp through the RE universe.

Anyhow, even though I'm not going to touch this, it's nice to hear they enlarged the hitboxes.  The millimeter-sized boxes needed for headshots and headshots being the only things doing damage made the original difficult and not fun.

If I want an arcade experience, that's what Ghost Squad is for.  The Darkside Chronicles is good stuff for RE fans.

I wish they'd remake RE2, RE3, and Code: Veronica like RE4.  This game only makes me want that more.  A combination RE2/RE3 game with that style would be perfect.  Or having Operation Javier (the Leon/Krauser scenario) as DLC for RE5.

Also, there seems to be more replay value this time around, since you're supposed to get a slightly different perspective on things depending on which character you play as, plus every stage (so far) has had a point where you can go down two different paths.  There's also replaying levels for better scores and getting more gold for weapon upgrading.

I have to hand it to Cavia for making this game all-around better than the original.

NMH & Killer 7 are 1000x better than anything Cavia will ever make.

People didn't like UC because they thought it was too long? Whaaaat?

Not long because there's actually 12-30 hours of original content like a normal game.  They are long because you have to keep replaying the same levels over to grind money/stars to get better weapons to beat later levels.  The levels suck ass and are no fun in the first place with their crappy hitboxes and annoying enemies.  Why would I want to keep replaying them?

Killer 7.   :yuck  No More Heroes was the first Suda 51 game I played a bit of that I thought was kinda cool.  Killer 7?  Samurai Champloo?  Garbage.

NMH & Killer 7 are 1000x better than anything Cavia will ever make.

Yeah, I can agree with this on the first game.  Not so much the sequel (thus far).  Although the game play has major issues, I still want to play through Umbrella Chronicles for all the story stuff and that original scenario.  I don't care if I ever replay it afterwards.

i don't give a fuck about resident evil and i'm of the idea that light gun games on the wii are all the same which is the reason i didn't even want to bother with dead space extraction

If you're not into Resident Evil, I wouldn't bother.  The best traditional light gun game on the Wii I've played is Ghost Squad.  Have yet to play HoTD Overkill.

It's not like a traditional light gun game. It's more of an on rails horror adventure.

Definitely.

Oh yeah, one thing that's been removed is that you can no longer move the camera around using the analog stick on the nunchuk.  Instead, the analog stick functions as another way to switch weapons.  I don't really mind this omission since the aiming is better.  You can also shake the nunchuk to reload, and there's an inventory screen, which while pointless for switching weapons, they've changed the health power-up system to be more like traditonal RE games, so you can store and use herbs whenever you want to.  Health sprays now function as extra lives, bringing you right back when you die.

Good idea to be rid of the analog stick look-around.  I found it annoying to make sure you look everywhere when trying to find stuff.

But geez I hate shaking the nunchuk to do anything. :yuck

I hate waggle in general.  But the benefit to being able to do that with the nunchuk is that you can keep aiming steadily with the Wiimote.  You can also still play the game with just a Wiimote if you want to.

I just threw Umbrella Chronicles back in.  YIKES at that frame rate.  It's definitely much smoother in Darkside.  Noticeably improved.

I've already died a couple of times from tiny hitboxes, too.  Maybe I really should trudge on through UC and complete it before going any further in Darkside, because Darkside's improved game play makes UC feel even worse than it did before.

Another thing is that grinding in rpgs requires 0 concentration.  if I do have to grind for a final boss or something (like with SMT SJ), I just do it blindly with one hand while doing internet browsing and posting with the other.  Or you can watch a movie/listen to music.

In non-rpgs you actually have to sit and play the game doing repetitive stuff to grind.  I hate that kind of grinding.

Yeah they're idiots.  I played the first level and the game was pretty shit.  Horrible graphics, horrible framerate, enemies still are mostly unresponsive to shots.  Doesn't have that knockback flash effect when you shoot things like good lightgun games.  Camera is still always bouncing around because it's FPV and so you are aiming at the head and then it jitters and throws off your aim.  Cutscenes were pretty boring so I skipped them.

It seemed better than the first game.  But even though I think RE5 is a weak game, it's still 100x better than this!  Capcom inhouse teams >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cavia.
