Only problem with this theory is that Lost suffered from the same common problems as pre-911 crap.

X-Files, Simpsons, COPS, and Married...with Children are all exceptions. Unless Fringe takes off the way X-Files did, it won't stick around. And X-Files was really popular from season 1 onward.

It got a full season pickup, ManaByte. For season three. It's not going anywhere. If it was on the bubble, the episode order would have been cut in half. It must be hitting its demographics and selling well. I don't track that stuff personally, but the proof is in the order.

Again, if it was on the bubble, Fox would not have picked up a full order. It'd be a mid season replacement and get an order in the early to mid-teens. A network is not going to invest in 22 episodes for a show in it's third season if it's on the chopping block (see: Chuck).

So it must be hitting its demographics, or reaching some numbers that Fox likes. End of story.

Don't kid yourself, it suffers from a lot of the same flaws and pitfalls Lost does. Doesn't stop either of them from being good shows.

Not really. It has setup its universe, and has abided by those rules. It doesn't drag everything out. For example, if Fringe was Lost, we would have found out about Charlie sometime in SEASON FOUR.

It helps that Fringe is generally written and directed by feature film professionals.

No, I like competency in my shows. Fringe has it, Lost has generally not. It's not very well written, the finale is a perfect example of the sloppy writing on display. For a "character-driven" show, it doesn't really have bullpen capable of writing, well, compelling characters. Characters never drove this show.

What Lost had that Fringe did not - from the beginning - was a super awesome concept. Fringe struggled its first season to find its hook, but when it did, look out! It was off to the races! Lost has squandered something that most serialized television dramas never have - a great pilot.

The problem is nobody cares about these characters. People didn't go, "Man, I can't wait to learn more about Sayid's past or about Kate's run-ins with the law!"

People wanted to know about this crazy fucking island and all the crazy island shit.

I guess you aren't doing a good job of explaining why it is not very well written. You nitpicked a lot of pitfalls that are found in a lot of good shows, Fringe included, cherry picked some legitimate complaints, then claimed it wasn't character driven because you didn't like the characters?

What I also love about Fringe is the great cinematography, it just looks way more polished than Lost. Lost has its visual moments but Fringe is very consistent with the look.

Just finished the finale...

Glad I didn't watch this show from the beginning or I'd be pissed right now. Instead I found the finale to be a good episode, but a laughable season finale. The one "big" answer provided is basically what people said after the first few episodes of S1: they're in Purgatory. Sure most of them died long after the initial crash or whatever, but it's still basically Purgatory.

What exactly about the island needed to be protected? Seriously, I figured there would be some "fruit of everlasting life" shit that people wanted, but I still can't grasp why anyone gave a shit about the island. And guess what - I'll never know. smh

The episode summed up the entire season: good, but a horrible finale. There is no closure here. Change a couple things at the end and you could have a couple more seasons easily. Of mysteries piled on mysteries. SMH

I can respect other peoples opinions towards the finale, but please do us all a favor and keep your theories on "whether they were dead the whole time" or "it's purgatory" to yourself. It was pretty clear cut what was what.

Watched the first two episodes of Fringe tonight. The pilot episode has a really weird feel to it, although it's kind of hard to peg down just why. It doesn't have the feel of an episode of television series, but at the same time it doesn't quite feel like a movie either. I liked it though, although it did drag a bit at times. Second episode wasn't quite as good, I though, but certainly not bad. Will rent more episodes from Netflix and try to get caught up for season 3.

Ohh I gotcha.

It was a good episode, the problem is that it was a bad finale. I doubt there would be many complaints if many of these mysteries were explained throughout the series, allowing the last season to progress instead of being bogged down by unanswered questions
