Man to marry his video game girlfriend this Sunday

Last month, I wrote about a Japanese husband who confessed to his wife that he had a virtual girlfriend, a character from an addictive Nintendo DS game called Love Plus. Now, another man is planning to hold a wedding ceremony with his Love Plus girlfriend this coming Sunday. The man, who calls himself SAL9000, was so in love with Nene Anegasaki that he decided to marry her and take her on a honeymoon to Guam. Of course, this means that he literally just took his Nintendo DS to Guam... while there, he took photos, livecast their adventures on popular video-sharing site Nico Nico Douga, and documented their adventures using the augmented reality iPhone app Sekai Camera. In any case, the guy plans on having a public reception in Tokyo this Sunday. It will be livecast on Nico Nico Douga, but in case you miss it, we'll be bringing you an update early next week. Stay tuned!

How do you marry a character?  I mean, I know there's people in Africa or wherever that have married animals, but this doesn't seem feasible.  Or is it just him holding a mock-wedding for his "waifu?"

If this isn't a sign that Japan needs to wake the fuck up and address its social problems and declining population, I don't know what the hell is.

This is the future...we'll start to see this shit become prevalent in the U.S. too.  The internet age just started and we've seen a lot of fucking weird shit already.  Just think-- people are going to want to push those boundaries as the weird stuff becomes more normal.

I wonder if Nintendo will replace his DS after he soils it during the honeymoon.

Oh, if only that were true.

No wait, I might go back and I got family there.  Isn't it due for Korea to take over the fanboy reigns?  Let 'em go there!

EDIT: Actually, I take that back.  Let 'em all go to Japan and maybe date each other.  But then their offspring...hmm...

I wish it was the other way around and some blond bombshell bimbo would marry Kratos :drool

I wouldn't bet against it in Japan. Of course, it would be Kratos Aurion involved this time.

The DS has a wedding dress.   :lol

Quote
Hideo Kojima has a problem -- apparently his staff is playing gal-games on the sly. "All everyone talks about is their 'girlfriends,'" the famous game director said in Famitsu magazine this week. "I see them all standing in the shadows looking serious, and I go and see what's up and they're all bragging about their girlfriends -- like, 'Oh, she changed her hairstyle for me' and so on. I'm not gonna give his name, but there's one guy who hasn't had a girlfriend for decades and talking about his virtual friend makes him so incredibly happy."
Kojima is talking about Love Plus, a Nintendo DS title released early September in Japan by Konami. "You pretty much never see Konami games becoming popular among the employees of Konami themselves," Kojima espoused. "I think Love Plus is the first one. You see people sneaking in time with it in the bathrooms and so on; I guess they don't want to get caught playing it at their desks."

Quote
"I was talking with Goichi Suda earlier, and told me about this guy he saw who went to a movie theater by himself but bought two tickets," Kojima said. "Suda was curious, so he went in with him and saw him take his DS out of his backpack, open up the case and place it in the seat next to him. He had his 'girlfriend' on the screen!"

:rofl

Are those Kojima quotes real, or was he just fucking with the interviewer to make a silly story?

Is there really a creepy love plus fad going on in Japan?

It's from a 1up story, so I imagine it's real.

I didn't know Konami made the game...there's other quotes from some of the staff saying how other Konami staff are thanking them for making it and how happy they are.

According to google:

wwwww is short for "warau" (笑う), the Japanese verb for laugh

Makes sense.  :bow demi :bow2

The other comments are basically like "that's cold!" (presumably directed towards all the laughing), crazy, creepy, etc.

I saw someone write it out as うえうえうえうえうえうえうえうえうえうえ、or "ueueueueueueueueueueue."

http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/games/japan-resort-draws-men-with-virtual-girlfriends-20100901-14h8w.html

Quote
Its creators, Konami Digital Entertainment, have long thrilled young men obsessed with high-tech, manga and anime, known as "otaku", by letting them chase virtual girls in the alternative universe of their digital dreams.

The hit video game made headlines when a 27-year-old Japanese man known only as "Sal 9000" staged a tuxedo wedding late last year, which was watched by thousands online, with his favourite cartoon girl, Nene Anegasaki.

But in the latest edition, game makers have gone a step further and teamed up with the very real city of Atami, an onsen, or hot spring town, 100 kilometres southwest of the Japanese capital.

They have selected 13 romantic locations which can be overlaid with images of Rinko or her teenage friends Manaka and Nene, who have all swapped their usual sailor-style school uniforms for casual summer wear.

Local souvenir shops in the resort town have caught on and capitalised on the love-struck new clientele, selling Love Plus-themed souvenirs, from good-luck charms to steamed buns and fish sausages.

The local Ohnoya hotel even offers traditional rooms to the unusual couples, which feature two sets of futon beds and another barcode panel that allows the men to visualise their girlfriends in a flattering summer kimono.

I love how these guys go public with this shit.

Might as well go on the news and say "I have completely given up the pursuit of sharing at least part of my life with a member of the opposite sex (or same-sex)."

It's like they trick themselves into a bizarre lie to distract from their real problems.  On the other hand, the earth is overpopulated, so more power to them.

There isn't enough :japancry on the internet

digg if u will the picture
of moe catgirls in bloom
avatars strike curious poses
they feel the cheet
the cheetos tween me and u

how can u just leave me standing?
alone with barcodes by my side?
maybe ur spec's too demanding
maybe my dad had the answer - suicide
maybe ur just like haruhi
i luv her dance and sigh
AR just augments my sorrow

this is what it sounds like ... when cats cry

And they wonder why Japan's population is shrinking.

Why isn't Meryl Silverburgh available?

Otaku don't want old 20/30-something bags like Meryl.  Outta high school = Old n' wrinkly.

I would probably buy the game if I could make Sunny my waifu, real talk.
