Will motion controls ruin gaming?

I admit I was excited for the motion controls for Wii before it came out, but after couple of years with the final product I dont find any game that is more fun with them. What gaming needs is new ideas of ingame gameplay, not this waggle shit. The xbox360 controller is perfectly fine, but that wont last long. MS and Sony are on their way with their controls, and I fear that a few years from now almost all games will be about the waggle, with or without a controller. Natal does not interest me at all and it will probably be even more ridiculous than waving a wiimote.

So do you see yourself getting excited for this shit in the coming years and future?

Motion control done right is cool, but it's hard to find anything past a tech demo that emphasizes this (like impossible).  Wii Sports Resort Ping Pong and Sword specifically are neat.

I still think the Wii has sullied motion control for a lot of people.  It has been pretty awful for the past three years, and while motion plus makes it better, you can count all the games that support it on one hand.  Maybe with Natal, Saggle and the future of Motion Plus the waggle can die. 

and some people consider the pointer on the wii remote to be motion control.  I don't.  That said, the pointer stuff on the Wii has been good.

Agreed.  When it's used right, it can be fun, and using the Wii pointer can work well.  I thought RE4 Wii Edition played great; better than using regular controls, in fact.  ( Capcom rocks for including regular controls too!)  Some of the driving games like Excite Truck and Mario Kart Wii have been a lot of fun to play as well.

When waggle is used in the place of hitting buttons, like shaking it to attack, it sucks shit, and unfortunately the majority of Wii games seem to be games meant for regular control pads with waggle thrown in.

No.  They'll help broaden and enrich it.  First-gen versions of everything always tend to be gimmicky, because gimmicks are the low-hanging fruit.

Either way is fine, but so far only Wii has been using it consistently. That is about to change though.

This discussion would have been better if it was 2006 and even then, a dicey judgment call.

I don't think Natal and the dildowand will get any kind of significant marketshare.  Microsoft will be more successful at it because of the huge ad campaigns they intend to roll out.  Wii did as well as it did by aiming for soccer moms and grandmothers, previously untapped markets that were left to their own devices, who usually wound up playing Solitaire on their PC.  As it stands these new wagglecrap technologies are aiming for teenagers and young adults, the same group that is already well aware of the 360 and PS3.

It doesn't matter as neither will ruin gaming because it'll fail to pick up any kind of momentum.

I don't know if I'm ready to make a verdict on whether its suitable for fps games.  I've been playing the Call of Duty 4 port and its really hard to get a bead on someone zig zagging around.  I try to snipe but I end up only taking out other snipers and distinguished mentally-challenged fellows that stand still too long.  It is fun though.
Probably more, but I don't completely remember the stuff I've traded in.
You're buying the wrong games.

Kororinpa, Mercury Meltdown Revolution, and other marble-rolling games make effective use of motion controls/tilt.

Another big problem with motion controls is that they are inherently imprecise due to the inability to reperform a particular action every time.  You will never see Devil May Cry or Street Fighter rely on motion controls because you can can't do the exact same motion again and again.

While I personally have no interest whatsoever in motion controls, it's only one of many things that could possibly "ruin" gaming if allowed to run unchecked.

Even then, I barely play games anymore anyway. So burn it to the ground for all I care.

I own Wii, DS and a 360. But I have gotten most playtime from my 360 which has a very good controller. I really dont see the need for Natal.

It's not aimed at you. That's the entire point. It's about trying to attract an expanded and wider demographic than gamer nerd A and B that you represent. There is no need to fear however that all games will suddenly be motion controlled games for lots of reasons.

waggle usually sucks because it cannot reach the reliability of a button press (occasionally the tactile feel helps, see SMG's spin move), motion controls rock when done well. you play your 360 more because it has more high profile games, not because you hate the wii controller. in summation, this thread is stupid.

I agree.  Also, with emulators, it'd take several years to work through all of the decent and better games released in the past 30 years.
