I'm kind of surprised that no one has mentioned The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. It would make my list

Great movie (I've got the Korean Blu-ray release), but I felt like Lee was trying way too hard to ape the whole Wong Kar Wai look and style.

I know that it's not as bleak as Requiem, but I have a hard time understanding people picking The Fountain over everyone's favorite addiction movie.  Then again, there are people putting anime flicks on here, which is just plain wrong on so many levels.  WEEABOOS.

I think I would've put Requiem for a Dream on my list if it were still earlier in the decade. I was obsessed with that movie during my sophomore year of college when it first came out (saw it opening day in Seattle). I still appreciate it, but not nearly as much as I used to.

And hey, Millennium Actress is a good film, anime or not.

Quote
Millennium Actress was very favorably received by critics, gaining a 94% "fresh" rating at RottenTomatoes.com.[1] Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan said of the film "as a rumination on the place movies have in our personal and collective subconscious, "Millennium Actress" fascinatingly goes where films have not often gone before".[2] Kevin M. Williams of the Chicago Tribune gave the movie 4 stars and put his feelings for the film this way: "A piece of cinematic art. It's modern day Japanese animation at its best... It's animated, but it's human and will touch the soul of anyone who has loved deeply".

I thought The Fountain was a better movie. Requiem is good but I liked The Fountain more, it was more interesting, I really liked Hugh Jackman in it, and of course the score is amazing. I doubt I'll watch Requiem again anytime soon

My high school buddies were obsessed with Requiem for so long that I just fucking got sick of it.  Although the music used was always kinda cool.

What about Dancer in the Dark?  At least there's ass to ass in Requiem.  Dancer just had death.

Calling 1984 bad is up there with your ludicrous review of Unforgiven. I think you have an aversion to cinema that doesn't spell everything out for you.

I vote for Charles Mingus' albums "mingus mingus mingus mingus mingus" and "pithecanthropus erectus".  They're neither films nor of this decade, but they win the category anyway because they're just that awesome.

Interesting critique. I can think of many movies I don't like where some might accuse me of that, but then again I like plenty of films that don't spell everything out for me. It certainly doesn't apply to a movie based on a book I read multiple times for pleasure and in school.

1984 is not good, and I don't think it's universally acclaimed so I'm certainly not the only person who hated it. It's very slow, and they take a book I found to be fascinating and turn it into a dry, boring slog.

Unlike Unforgiven, you will not be met with cries of blasphemy for saying you did not like 1984, but to call it a bad film is still pretty ridiculous.

Meh, I thought it was bad. Maybe we have different opinions on what a good or bad film constitutes. You probably look at it from a more technical aspect since you're actually involved in film, know more about it, etc. For me something doesn't have to be Val Helsing/Transformers level to be bad, and a film that gets things right on a technical level can still be bad overall. I'd love to get some examples of bad films in your eyes, but not focused on blockbusters/action stuff for instance.

Was I wrong about Unforgiven...yes.
