PCSX2 - ps2 emulation
« on: November 25, 2009, 04:36:09 PM »
How far has ps2 emulation come? I no longer have a ps2 around me all the time and sometimes I'd like to pop in Frequency or something equally casual .

Anyone here have experience with it?

try to mess with the graphics or speed hack settings.

or try getting latest beta build: http://forums.pcsx2.net/thread-8317.html

and seeing how gaffers were posting ff12 shots try asking there: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=152914&page=28&highlight=PCSX2

Hmm. I've got 0.9.6.

I'll try that latest build then.

Can you play online via pcsx2 or something? Why not use ggpo for 3S?

I finished Persona 4 on it the other day. I prefer it to using a PS2 because save states = no dying, and I don't have the patience to die in RPG's.

I have the exact same specs as you so I can tell you that performance is solid, excellent if you don't mind the sometimes choppy music. It sometimes dips to 35 fps in cut scenes/dialogue portions, but during gameplay it was a smooth 50-60 fps.

But I also didn't have any special filtering enabled, when I turn on AA (or the PS2 equivalent) everything looks really blurry, so I just left it off.

What settings/plug ins ya got? And choppy music can get to me.

You can use either, but iso works a lot better.

There's a way to hook up your dualshock 3 and play with it, if you need a controller.

That's pretty cool.  Getting mixed info searching around on how it works on my model MacBook.  Gonna try the Windows version...I mean if people can get it running on old EEE PCs, mine has to run some stuff.   :lol  The OSX version sucks shit.

Yep. The only game I'm playing for now is Dragon Age, until I beat it. Unfortunately, it's taking me a while and I want to play one game at a time. :(

I keep getting error message whenever I start up the program, says something about plugins failing to load. Any suggestions?

Also, it should be noted that I know nothing about this program or how it works.  :'(

Works like any other emulator like epsxe.

Get the version linked above. It comes with plug ins. Do what was suggested: set the graphics to sse3, use a speed hack.

I got that version, that's the one that keeps giving me error messages about certain plugins not loading. Also, there's only one option for graphics: ZeroGS.

And apparently I need a PS2 Bios.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've only ever emulated SNES, NES, and Genesis games before so I'm a complete noob when it comes to this sort of thing.

To get bios put in pcsx2 bios + torrent in google. Should get a TPB result.

It sounds like you haven't applied the plug in folder. It should say,"Plug in directory/Bios Directory" go to pcsx2/bios for the bios once you get them, and pcsx2/plugins for the plugins. When you get the bios, if you're American, put in on American bios, if you're European put it on European bios.

Is it saying this lack of plug in thing when you boot the emu up or when you try to start a game?

I grabbed the installation file that MCD linked to, the one that's supposed to come with plugins. And it DOES come with plugins, I've seen the ones that it's mentioned as not being able to load sitting in the plugins folder.

Uninstall, go with a complete uninstallation, and reinstall.

Done that about four times now.

Anyway, with the Bios loaded, I can at least get to the actually program [instead of just the setup screen], though it still gives me the same error messages. However, when I click on "Load CD/DVD" and I get a whole series of error messages and nothing whatsoever happens.

The plugins that won't load are the three "gsdx" plugins.

Tell me your error message from the emulog. Go to pcsx2/logs

My brother borrowed mine, plus I've got several systems already hooked up. I'd like to be able to just pop a game into my PC and play.

Edit: Running it under admin mode fixed the immediate problems and I'm now able to actually boot up a game, but I'm not getting any sound. I've tried all three sound plugins, but none of them do anything.

Edit 2: It works!!

I never noticed that before on my 480i dirty poor ps2 slim version  :'(

All the FFXII talk lately has made me wanna pick it up again...it'll probably look pretty nice on PS3 upscaled BC.  The only thing stopping me is Dragon Age reminding me that I have no patience for setting up gambits at the moment.

and remember, burn at 4x or lower for best results.

I use Imgburn (at 4x) too.

But if you're trying to burn games to run on the PS2 emulator, you can just use Daemon Tools to mount the image to a virtual drive instead.

Mess around with the settings. For instance, I put my speed hack on 2x cycle rate, which worked, but it made the music choppy as fuck. Putting it on 1.5x fixed this problem.
