There is plenty in the game that isn't optional that is also cringe worthy. There is also some awesome stuff. It's a very mixed bag.

Make sure you have a loaded gun next to your controller, kestastrophe. You know, just in case. And don't play it in front of the wife. PLEASE don't.
I kid you not, my wife came home right before I met Drebin when the merc is shitting in the barrel. She just shook her head and said "that's lame" and I nodded in agreement  :lol

You know, it was also Star Ocean 4 that killed my interest in JRPGs.  It was just so bad that I couldn't go back.  After that, everything about anime and JRPGs just suddenly hit me and seemed terrible and ridiculous.  Like, "how the hell did I ever enjoy this" kind of thing.  It's kind of sad, I suppose.  I just need something GOOD to wash the bad taste out of my mouth...

Yeah SO4 & DQIX killed my interest in jrpgs

Then Demon Souls, Blue Dragon DS & SMT SJ brought it back.  They aren't traditional jrpgs but they're good and addicting.  I dunno.  Maybe Resonance of Fate will be a good traditional jrpg (outside of usual horrible tri-ace cutscenes).

They all suck.  All cutscenes should be skipped.  Better yet, eliminated outright.

I replayed MGS2 before MGS4, and yeah, some of the cutscenes are pretty bad.  Fortune is the absolute worst.

Olga's hairy armpits still rock, though.

Fuck yeah... I support hairy armpits on girls because that means they probably don't shave their cooter either :drool

It's boring as shit.  Duckroll didn't even finish it.  He just got bored and gave up.  I finished it.  The game is zzzzz from start to finish.

The multiplayer and post-game is cool if you like that MMO style questing and grinding.  I hate MMOs so I played a bit of the post-game and gave up when I had to grind a ton if I wanted to beat the next optional boss.

until you beat a post-game high level boss.  That is the most bullshit thing ever.  I almost felt as jipped as if they stuck it in DLC.

Oh yeah, Demon's Souls.  Forgot about that.  That IS a fantastic game.  One of the best RPGs (RPG-lite, at least) I've played this gen.   :-[

And I should clarify that DQIX is not anywhere in the same level as SO4.  SO4 is trash, DQIX is solid it's just the main SP storyline is very average and does nothing particularly interesting to make it stick out from any other rpg.  Still it does being standard very well despite being kinda dull, so it's a 7-8/10ish compared to the lol/10 that SO4 is.  I actually really enjoyed the opening story to DQIX (first 3 hours, maybe?) but then it never really went anywhere and the gameplay was uninteresting.

If you're going to play it entirely SP and just do the main game (30 hours) then I would say yes out of the ones I have played (4/5/8/9).  I love DQ4/5 and DQ8 was cool for the very impressive 3d world to explore and okish storyline.  DQ9 is the only one I didn't care for.

I make the caveats because I know there are like dozens and dozens of post-game quests (they keep adding them as free DLC every week) with like EVERY DQ BOSS EVER (DQ1-8 + spinoffs) added as an optional DLC quest and guests cameos and all kinds of neat things.  It's basically like an MMO that they keep adding to.  Kinda like how White Knight Story is as well.

But all that requires getting strong enough to do post-game things and grinding between each  jump in power between quests/bosses.  And the post-game grind stuff isn't enjoyable to me.

I think duckroll liked/played through 4/5/(6?)/7/8 and this was the only one he didn't like to the point of not finishing out of boredom.

One thing that DQIX does well is the dungeons designs are great.  Very fun dungeons.

I wonder how the DLC bosses will be handled in the US version... perhaps they'll all be present on the cartridge already? And I'm also hoping Nintendo lives up to their promises and markets the hell out of this game.

How did they do it with Layton USA?  That game also had weekly puzzle updates in Japan.

layton HAD already the puzzle in the game but you still had to connect to the internet to download the key to unlock them...
when i discovered this i tought "what's the reason?" and i can't help but think of it just as a somewhat cheap tactic to prevent people from selling the game as soon as they finish it

Yeah I don't disagree with Segata.  There are a lot of people who enjoyed it and others who didn't.  I just tend to be more vocal.

It's a competently made rpg with good graphics and sound.  But here are my problems with the game:

1.  It's subjective, but I didn't care for the story much.  So I didn't have a drive to see what happens next.

2.  The battle system is very standard and a little slow (faster than 8, much slower than the 2d ones).  The one thing that makes DQIX's battle system unique is the job system.  Unfortunately for me personally the game did not have a job system.  The job system IIRC resets your character back to lvl.1, I changed job ONCE with one character midway through the game and it took him until the final boss to catch up to the other characters level-wise.  Meanwhile for the entire 2nd half of the game he had a low HP, low DEF and low ATK until pretty far in, making him useless until the end.  This means if you get to a boss that you are stuck against and you realize you have the wrong jobs for the boss, you can't just switch jobs like FFX-2 or 4WoL or switch demons in SMT to re-strategize.  If you do that your characters will drop to lvl.1 and it'll take hours to grind them back up to the point where they even have enough HP & DEF to survive the boss's attack.  So basically if you get stuck on a boss you can A.  Grind or B.  Change jobs and grind EVEN MORE, which kind of takes away any incentive to change jobs.  So yeah, for me it was like the game had no job system and was just a by the books battle system that wasn't quick or had unique aspects.
*edit, also another negative against changing jobs was you don't keep most of your good skills/spells when you change.  So it's not even like you can build up a cool character with all these skills/spells from various jobs.

3.  There's not much of a world to explore.  The main story leads your around from island to continent.  But since you never get a flying vehicle your world exploration feels pretty limited.  I don't remember finding any real meaty optional things in the main game.

3.  You make all your party characters so they have no dialogue and they are not real characters.  The only real character in the story is your lead + the NPCs.  DQV was like this too, but there were other characters with your family.  No cute monsters in your party either.

So yeah, without a story to drive me to play or a battle system that made me want to fight there just wasn't much motivation to keep playing other than just to get it done.  The dungeons were fun to explore, but that was about it.

And yeah, after I beat the game I tried a bunch of times to beat the post-game boss to get the flying vehicle and read some strategies online and the consensus was that it was just impossible for my team because the boss's big attack would wipe out my whole party instantly.  So the choice was to grind.  Not just a level or two, but A LOT for several hours or more.  I weighed the idea of using my time to grind and the result of getting a flying machine to fly around the world to get more quests and optional bosses where I would need to grind more...and I decided that I was finished with the game.

I don't care for Level-5 DQs much, but to my knowledge DQ8 is still the only jrpg ever to have a real 3d overworld like a wrpg but with jrpg map design.  That was exciting enough to drive me through DQ8 to explore it all.  DQ9 didn't really have anything to do the same.

I still look forward to DQ6r since I absolutely love non-L5 DQ.

The first one is cheesy and poorly-timed, but the Morrigan one is super creepy. I don't know if there's simply less expression on the characters' faces, or if it's the fact that they're just engaged in elf frottage since they're wearing underwear.
