Wal-Mart got exclusive worldwide merchandising rights to the World Cup. Brilliant move on their part, but I still hate Wal-Mart.

I love the World Cup, by the way. I went to a game in DC during World Cup 1994, but I didn't get hooked until World Cup 1998. I was volunteering on a kibbutz in Israel with a bunch of Europeans and South Africans and watched the whole thing with them. It was incredible.

The final game of World Cup 2006 was the day after my wedding, so we all sat around and watched while opening gifts.

Can't respect the game after the last World Cup came down to a stupid shoot-out :(  What a lame-ass way to decide a world championship that only happens once every 4 years.

I think Groups A and G going to be the most exciting to watch. Group B might be fun to watch, though I don't know how South Korea and Greece are playing right now. Hopefully Greece has changed its boring, fluke-finding brand of play over the past few years. England will mop up group C, obviously. Let's hope the United States makes it out. Germany will lay waste to group D, awesome. Group E could be tough, obviously Netherlands topping it, but Cameroon's not half-bad, and I haven't seen Denmark play in a while. Italy and Paraguay out of F. Brazil and Portugal out of G, but not without some good games. Spain and Chile out of H, maybe Switzerland. I'm SO EXCITED!

Fuck France. Fuck them and their white flag waving, frog eating, soccer cheating ways.

I dont see the US getting past England and Slovenia. I mean Slovenia bested Russia, and England is just plain good nowadays. US is definately no pushover, and they havent been for a while but I dont think they can really compete against these teams.

Good draw for the Netherlands, next round all but sure.

I think we'll get past Slovenia. Not sure about our chances after that, though.

Jesus, Bergkamp's 98 goal against Argentina still gives me the chills. I was 11 years old when I watched that unfold in the present, and even at that age--having only been playing youth soccer for 4 years--I could appreciate the exquisite, borderline-impossible control required for his first touch. For fuck's sake he takes a 50-meter pass right out of the sky and completely robs the ball of its velocity before gently nutmegging one of the world's best defenders and then volleying the ball in the top corner of the net all in the space of two seconds. GOD DAMN IT IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

Bu if we are referring to games, not goals, then nothing compares to Zidane's quarterfinal match against Brazil in 2006. It's the best game of football any one man has ever played. He made the entire Brazilian midfield look like a bunch of little kids--who the fuck does that to a Brazilian midfield? When will we see that sort of footballing intelligence again, I wonder.

Well we would have had a chance v Italy 3 years ago except for a dive. Anything is possible. I just worry that we'll drop a game to one of the other teams and need a draw with Germany to progress.

Germanys group isn't as easy as it first seems and if i had to pick a group that could spring an upset, it WOULD be that group.

if Australia can grind out a draw (with messers. Cahill etc, it's entirely possible!), then that makes the other games in the group very very interesting to put it mildly.

Serbia and Ghana won't be quite the pushovers they seem, and a draw or Germany defeat in the first game to Oz would split this group wide open.

I agree, the group has character, but I see surprises coming first from Ghana, what with the dynamic and versatility of its midfield, over Australia.

That was my thinking, if there's one strange result it could be a crazy group.

The best part about Australia going through #1 means we can skip playing Engerland (Three lions on my chest. I know we can't go wrong) and face off against the USA and Germany faces England.
