While emulation is nice and all, there's something much more appealing of playing games on their original platforms. I'm thinking of purchasing a Sega Saturn, probably the only major console I never owned and also a hassle to emulate. A friend let me borrow his Saturn back in high school, so I didn't miss the classics such as Nights, Fighter's Megamix, Guardian Heroes, Die Hard Arcade, etc., but there still a good number of games I missed.

Do any of you guys still play older games on their original consoles? How do you deal with optimizing the image quality on HDTVs, for example?

For DC I use VGA adapter.
For PS1 I just play on PS2 w/component.

For Saturn....yeah, no luck. I either play in s-video and it looks meh or for the most part I'd rather just play on emu. In general I just don't play my saturn at all. Or I hope for saturn ports to psp ^^;

For everything cart based I just go emu or VC. It's just not worth the drop in image quality imo using regular composite video.

I don't have a Sega CD or Lynx or Turbogfx so dunno about those.

You have a working Sega Saturn emulator? I remember wasting my whole weekend a few years back trying to get one to work with a Dragon Force iso that I found and it kept crashing. Haven't tried again since then.

I still enjoy playing on the actual retro systems. For the N64 and SNES I use S-Video, Genesis I use standard A/V, and Dreamcast VGA. Sadly I have a top loading NES so my only option is the RF Adapter.

Funny you mention the Saturn, I'm about to bite the bullet on one myself. I ordered the Saturn Mod Chip off Racketboy.com. The best Saturn games are so hard to find and cost quite a penny on eBay and Amazon. I figure I'll just burn them and play them on the system.

I think the appeal for me in playing on the actual systems is my ability to stick with a game. Sure an emulator is nice but I might think the game sucks right off the bat. It's just too easy to close and load a new ROM. I'm more likely to give the game a chance and possibly find a hidden gem if I've got the system hooked up and had to put the game in.

Beezy the best emulator I've found so far is Yasube (spelling might be incorrect). I've found most games work with it but it does take some trial and error to get each one running in a decent playable format.

Saturn emulators work pretty good these days.

I just wanna play Dragon Force again. I've been wanting to play it ever since my big brother broke it by throwing it against the wall in frustration. He sold our Saturn not too long afterward. :'(

Not really. Though I still have a Dreamcast hooked up I'm not sure it is counted as retro.

People still don't even consider psx and saturn retro even though they're 15-16 years old.

PSone is easy since all PS3s and PS2s have BC for that platform. Not a fan of the upscaling and the smoothing that is available on the PS3. The screen looks like it has been smudged with Vaseline. I actually prefer the PSP for PSone gaming these days.

I used to have a NES, SNES mini, Dreamcast, and, the crown jewel, a JVC X'Eye (hybrid Genesis and Sega CD.) I used composite cables on an old tube TV.

I have some old Japanese consoles that I sometimes mess around with. I definitely agree that playing on a physical machine is a lot better than an emulator...the soul just isn't there on a computer!

My favorite retro console is probably the PC-Engine+CD drive. There's an insane amount of awesome games that still hold up pretty well. It's really a shame that the console flopped overseas, it deserved better.

I used to be, but these days I usually just turn to emulation instead. Got rid of my entire Genesis/CD/32X library a few years back, recently sold off the last of my Neo-Geo stuff, and next up is probably going to be my NES/SNES game collection and maybe Saturn too. I just never play that stuff anymore.

EDIT: If Saturn emulators are now up to par, I definitely don't need the Saturn anymore. All I really care about replaying again is Guardian Heroes anyway.

All the time, though I think VC emulation is excellent. I have nearly all of my retro systems hooked up (aside from N64 and Xbox1) and will still play them. GF is a fan of oldskool games too, which is nice.

Emulation is where it's at.

Most of the games I want are either extremely cheap or out the fucking ass expensive. Why should I pay some fuck on eBay $150 for FF3 when I can download it off the internet in less than two minutes? It isn't like downloading this game takes away money that would have went to Square - it would go directly into the hands of a fuckwit on eBay. The real experience is overrated.

Although I'm ready to load up on a bunch of emulators and roms. Mostly MAME stuff. If I had a house and was sure I was going to live there for 5-10 years, I'd think about building a MAME cabinet.

I like screwing around with old systems...opening them up, replacing pin connectors, etc. I don't know shit about electronics, but old cart-based systems are simple enough to take apart and put back together.

I just sold off most of my collection this past fall. I had a ton of stuff, right back to the atari/colecovision days. It was tough to part with, but I barely have time to beat a 360 game these days, let alone hook up a bunch of legacy systems and play.

That said, I've already weakened and started picking up odds and ends again.

I love all the old classics but I prefer to play them emulated at a nice resolution with graphics filters turned on to my liking.

I picked up a Saturn this past weekend. Got Clockwork Knight with it

I have Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona USA, and Nights coming via eBay. Having some trouble with the mod chip. The Saturn is sadly a Model 1 so it will take some soldering on the actual chip itself to get it working. Maybe this weekend.

I used to be all about collecting/playing the originals. Then I got my XBox modded in 2003. For the first time, I was able to play all these games emulated, with nice filtering options, at up to 480P on a TV. Plus I could easily play multiplayer. X-Men with 4P was awesome. All the Capcom and SNK titles played perfectly and looked better than any of the ports did. It was a no-brainer. Now I can do the same thing on my PSP, although for the MAME stuff, it's got to be on a computer.

Would love to get a MAME cabinet one day.

For me it's just too much clutter, and then there's the inconvenience of board-swapping. I used to have a homemade JAMMA harness that I used for a CPS-3 and SF3 2nd Impact (this was pre-Dreamcast version), and it was a real pain in the ass using the same joysticks with a Neo-Geo MVS. Fortunately the MVS I had also had inputs for Neo-Geo controllers, so I just used those. Quickly sold all that stuff off once SF3 W Impact got announced, and never went back. I prefer the ease and portability of consoles (I used to bring my systems and games to friends' houses all the time), plus the smaller size. CFW PSP's been really satisfying; just wish MAME worked (much) better on it. Never did bother with Final Burn. I miss my modded XBox, which is currently busted and back at the in-laws' in Ishikawa. :'(
