New Super Mario Bros Wii has sold 936,734 units during its first week on sale in Japan, making it the fastest selling week one Wii title in the region to date.

The Famitsu sales figures put the title ahead of previous week one high sellers Super Smash Bros Brawl (816,198), Mario Kart Wii (608,147) and Monster Hunter 3 (582,548).

According to Andriasang, the game sold over 422,000 copies in its first day alone.

The game has performed well in the UK charts too, entering at number three after Assassin's Creed 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Analyst Colin Sebastian noted last month the its sales had got "off to a good start after three days at retail", although added it wasn't yet apparent if the title had driven incremental hardware sales.

Because it feels like gamers are saying all the progression the video game medium has accomplished since 1990 is meaningless and as consumers all we want is the same formula from the early 90s.  Games have grown so much in the last 20 years, it just seems meh that the best selling game of this generation and maybe all time will be a retro title that adds almost nothing to a 20 year old formula besides slightly better graphics.

i agree with bebpo,it's not even a problem of it being "an old formula" it's a problem of new super mario bros barely having anything new on it... super mario bros 3 had airships level so new super mario bros has to have airship level... super mario world has ghost house so new super mario has to have ghost house,super mario bros 3 had a level where you are chased by a giant fish,new super mario bros has a level (wait i think it was actualy TWO level) where you are chased by a giant fish,super mario world had grates that you could climb,new super mario bros has grate where you can climb... you get the idea!

Last gen people bragged about Ps2 sales. But Ps2's brought us a lot of great games. Sony used the Ps2 success to get a lot of support.
Wii's success seems to be only beneficial for Nintendo and its stockholders. Nintendo doesn't seem to do anything with that money...

It's just that Nintendo sucks at delivering games that cater to gamers. They don't seem to care anymore. As long as Wiifit/Wiiplay/Sports sells well it's good.
They won't even use a fraction of the billion $ profits to help develop 3rd party games for the Wii. Hell, fans had to patch Fatal Frame 4.

The Wii line games are great products, though. But not the games I'm interested in.

I actually sold punch out wii like a week or so ago 

It's not bad or anything, but I didn't care for the style and other than that, it is basically a remake of Punch Out NES.  There have been punch out-like games that improved on the formula since punch out nes, and if I really wanted to play punch out circa 1987, I have two copies on the NES (plus Super on the SNES).  It was pretty funny that it was a full priced game too considering Bionic Commando Rearmed was $10 with more added content compared to the original.

I'm happy about NSMB wii selling well, though.  NSMB wii was a lot of fun.  Only real problem outside of the usual failures of being on the Wii (waggle, etc etc) was that it seemed too clinical.

Punch-out did a nice blend of familiar and new.  Your full set of abilities were useful, other than dodge being useful in every situation.  Learning punch placement helped gain necessary stars.  Title defense mode was the 'new' game.  Pretty solid so much that I decided to repurchase it after trading it in during the summer.

He doesn't get that the game is a lot deeper than meets the eye, but you can't really blame the softy for downplaying a legitimately hardcore game that isn't based upon pretentious storytelling, dazzling special effects, laid-back gameplay, and cheap orchestrated music.
