Did the graphics get downgraded since it was first shown?  I remember seeing the early footage and going OH SHIT CRYSIS, but this just looks like most big games on X360 these days.

That stuff is getting out of hand now.

I mean, if it came out on PC, I'd buy it on PC, but it's not like all console exclusive games are bad.  The only thing I'm hoping for is that they fix all the technical issues from the past couple videos (frame rate, tearing).

And despite being a downgrade in visuals from the original promise, it looks damn good (looking past technical issues).  What game this gen hasn't had a visual downgrade from the original promise? (FFXIII, MGS4, RE5, etc.)

I wonder what everyone is seeing in this game that makes it look like it will be fun to play?  Everything I have seen hasn't shown anything that looks the least bit interesting from a gameplay standpoint, and froom what i've heard of the dialogue the writing is going to leave a lot to be desired.  Sure they made Max Payne, but no one is going to argue with the fact that Max payne looks like fun.  Alan Wake?  The last video was literally eight minutes of a guy doing nothing.

Did you like Resident Evil games before RE4, or the Silent Hill games? The appeal, for me at least, is similar to those games.

The only parts I've seen of the gameplay that I think look dull are what was shown in that last video (the "walk through a cutscene" shit) and the weird times when you whip out a flair and the camera pulls back and gets all stupid.  The E3 videos looked great.

Game looks like an action based Silent Hill. Which I'm perfectly fine with. For those that complain about the writing or story.

A.) All Videogames have shit stories and 98% of them have weak voice acting. Including the very game this one evokes the most. Silent Hill.
B.) These are the same people who made the incredibly cheesey and hokey Max Payne series. Why would I expect anything different.
C.) I still love the bitter tears of PC gamers. Some of them are still pining over Halo. Get a life people.

Max Payne 2 had hilarious writing.  Best line is still:

I realize all those things, but Max Payne was fun.  it even looked fun.  This doesn't look fun in the least bit.  Maybe I'm just past the point where atmosphere or mood in games means shit.  I should just start playing Hearts of Iron instead of crap like Assasin's Creed II.

Honestly I always thought Max Payne was incredibly over-rated. A third person shooter where the entire gimmick was bullet time. But if people loved that series more power to them. This seems far more up my alley meaning an action based moody Silent Hill meets action game.

My expectations are quite realistic however. I don't think this game will be the end all and be all. I just think it might be a decent title with the sort of atmosphere and gimmick I find appealing. It could also suck. We'll see.

Hyperbole aside I think the game has a good chance of being good.

I can usually still enjoy survival horrors for their atmosphere and plodding pace even when there's quite a few flaws (Alone in the Dark being an exception) so this should be fine especially since I haven't seen any major flaws yet.

The map covers an expansive area, the engine able to draw insane distances

The tech at the heart of Alan Wake is nothing short of staggering

akin to what might be produced if konami was to give the Silent Hill series a RE4-style reboot

Frequently startling action is bound together by an intriguing and twisting narrative that makes you question the ever-blurring line between normal and the paranormal

Alan Wake triumphs in its ability to make the unbelievable both intimidating and troubling, a trait shared with only a few of gaming's finest scare-em-ups

There are even a few shared elements with more narrative-driven games like Heavy Rain

it calls to mind the likes of Silent Hill, Max Payne and even Dead Space........Remedy has the tools and the desire to elevate this beyond any of those examples

so robust, so interesting and so unique

There are tons of interviews on web, embargo ended today...but i am not clicking, did once and i was immediately spoiled :yuck

"Some games are more suited for the intimacy of the PC, and others are best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen. We ultimately realised that the most compelling way to experience "Alan Wake" was on the Xbox 360 platform, so we focused on making it an Xbox 360 exclusive. Both Microsoft and Remedy have long histories in PC game development. This decision was about matching this specific game to the right platform." said a Microsoft spokesperson.

That vid looked a lot more interesting than the gameplay footage at E3 which was a little ho-hum.  The environments are a lot more interesting in this one and the lighting effects are pretty awesome.

Reminded me a bit of Heavy Rain but with gameplay.

lol what does that even mean??

i guess for me, part of the charm of Max Payne was the tacky dialogue. I guess it felt somehow right because it was a cheesy detective noir game, but Alan Wake is a whole different type of animal. I guess it would depend on how much they ham up the genre trappings for it to be acceptable, but we'll have to wait and see.

The dialogue and voice acting has been wonky in nearly every video I've ever seen but then these are the Max Payne people. Game will live or die on the atmosphere and the action.

I'm not feeling this game. I just hope Remedy pull out of development hell without much trouble.

I agree with what Stoney says that the game will live or die on the atmosphere.  Not that sure about action.

Honestly, combat seems like a bit of a chore just shinning a light on the enemy before firing your gun.  Alone in the Dark comparisons are spot on because that game was all about Fire as the ultimate weapon.  It doesn't help that Alan Wake just kinda casually strolls around while fighting enemies.  IGN had a video where you were against a bulldozer and the guy is casually standing there throwing flairs at it and things like that.  Then there is the car stuff that looks as boring as the on-foot combat.  The action of the game all just looks like a snore.  Maybe it just looks that way and the atmosphere is strong enough to make up for it.  I don't know.  It doesn't even look like where you shoot the enemy matters.

If the action isn't capable then they will fail and the game will tank imo. I'm not saying it will be Gears of War action quality or anything but the action has to at least be credible. Especially coming from the people who made Max Payne.  Otherwise essentially you end up with another Silent Hill and there is a reason that series is on the decline.

Remedy has claimed the game could sink them as a company if it doesn't perform well and honestly among the 360 crowd I don't think there is a lot of buzz for this game at the moment. Microsoft better start cranking up the marketing machine.

If I'm on the fence, and I'm as about as easy of a mark for a survival-horror game as a publisher can get, then I can guarantee most of the Xbox 360 base is probably focused on Bad Company 2, Halo: Reach beta, Splinter Cell, etc.

They need to put up a kick ass demo for one on Xbox Live before the game releases. Its too much of an unknown quantity at this point imo and this isn't early in the gen where people are starved for games and will buy anything just based on potential.

For the moon people

Quote
Microsoft will be giving Alan Wake a full Japanese localization. Famitsu.com got first word on the game's primary voice staff.

In the starring role as Alan Wake is Shunsuke Sakuya. Previous game work from Sakuya includes Yakuza 2 and 3, and Final Fantasy X and X-2. He's also done voice overs for character portrayed by Ben Affleck, Ethan Hawke and Brad Pitt in a number of movies.

Alice, Alan's Wife, is being voiced by Yuko Kaida, voice of Maria Santiago in Gears of War 2, Aya in the Onechanbara series, and Faith in Mirror's Edge.

Barry, Alan's manager, is being voiced by Wataru Takagi, who's done voice over work for characters portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr., Jamie Fox, Jack Black and Jim Carrey. Game work includes a variety of Street Fighter characters.

The Famitsu.com editors were able to sample the Japanese language version in advance and were apparently impressed with what they heard. They also had no problems with the Japanese subtitles present in the first chapter.

Alan Wake hits here on May 27.

Whoa now, enough Alone in the Dark bashing.  It was not a great game by any means, but it had a lot of fantastic ideas buried in there.  It could even look pretty good at times, actually.  Not that Alan Wake is similar or anything, but the idea of a game picking up where AitD left off and properly completely many of its concepts is appealing.

most of the people bashing AitD probably never played it.

It was an average game with some cool ideas. Coulda been so much more. Definitely not a 'bad' game, though.

Fable 2 is worse.

alone in the dark had neat ideas but I'd say it was a bad game

the stupid burning roots crap at the end was terrible and the controls were ass.  I played the PC version, which was basically the 360 version, and I tried out the improved PS3 but the controls in all three were so bad.  But I wouldn't mind a sequel.

And alan wake is looking better.  The timing is unfortunate or else I'd probably buy it at release.

The root burning stuff was all changed in the PS3 version, thankfully.

I've actually played it on all three platforms out of curiosity (though not all the way through each of them).  :P  They are super cheap, so it wasn't a big deal.  The game remains very fascinating to me.
