There's a quicklook?

ugh, but I can't see any more of this game before I play it.

It's very spoilery, especially the last few seconds.

I think it makes sense that a game by people who made 2 games about non-stop shooting action would have a heavy focus on combat.
So the only question is, is the combat as balls-to-the-walls-awesome as Max Payne?

Finished the game...fantastic game

As a heavy Stephen King,X-Files,Supernatural,SF thriller horror fan...this is  :omg give me more

Combat...its very clear from the start that Remedy knows what combat is all about...satisfying,heart-pumping action...it works really well...it had to,game is combat heavy
Enemies are fast, vicious and ruthless, let your guard down even for a second...dead

Graphics whores are not going to be disappointed also, especially in the later parts off the game...amazing stuff
Open world..this game could easily pass as some open world RPG game...huge areas for people to explore, there is a map somewhere on the net and that's how big the game is...everything fells cohesive and connected

Took me about 20 hours...

Story...hmm,see for yourself...things are not what they appear to be or maybe they are...this game will have a cult following
I remember every character in this game and almost every location too...
Starting nightmare now.

Game can be very scary too...

The game has been out for two days and you've already finished it? 20hours playtime in two days? wow :lol

I've only played 10 minutes to see if it works. Will play eventually after I've watched all the prologue episodes and have finished playing Nier.

Thanks for the impressions, though.

yeah probably a bit vague. I just found it funny you said the game was ethered by a single reviewer who I'd never heard of as

- Game reviewers are a dime a dozen
- This games been getting really good reviews
- There doesn't seem to be a sizable community following that guy
- Even popular critics don't have jack all impact on games with a marketing juggernaut like Microsoft behind them

I understand this is a single scene and I dont judge the game by it but unfortunately I watched it not long after the game was released and it turned me off.

from the top: the ether thing was a joke.  Tom Chick's reviews generally seems to clown on people who are hyped up for AAA games.  On gaf (and here) there were large threads about his opinion and people trying to debate them (mostly on gaf).  Like, I think Uncharted 2 was voted the most overrated game of last year.

my personal thought on Alan Wake is that if I can find it early, I will buy it.  As of now my problem with the game is that it's coming out at the same time another game I want more (Red Dead Redemption).  Combat seems a bit dull but it's a survival horror and that isn't the draw of those games.

I kind of would have liked some adventure elements in it. Certainly not as much as stuff like Silent Hill. But some maybe.

That being said, Dead Space has almost no true adventure elements and is still a blast and one of my favorites from this gen. We'll see if Alan Wake is more Dead Space or more just a watered down shooter game.

I think there was like only one puzzle on RE5 :lol, it worked on the old games but now that they are combat centric the puzzles just get in the way.

Considering we're on a videogame forum that is a spin off of another videogame forum I don't think that "normal person" applies here.  If we're talking about game reviewers know to, as prole so eloquently puts it, "interfags" Tom Chick is right up there.  I'm not saying that reviews matter, because I can't see the typical gamer being swayed by any critical opinion that isn't accompanied by marketing video, but my sentiment stands.

He is a freelance reviewer who runs a site that no normal gamer visits. That's not exactly name dropping material.

That's not even taking into account his generally knee jerk forced contrarion positions (my characterization). I think its probably more unusual for even a forum dweller to know who Tom Chick is rather than not know who he is.

Nothing like Crysis.

The game is completely linear, it's just that instead of tunneling you through tight designed area spaces, a lot of times you have room to breathe so to speak.

Which gives it a better atmosphere and a bigger sense of location.

Basically the game puts you into some kind of sandbox environment and leaves you alone, you always have clear(visible) destination.
But within every episode you always have linear and open sections.
In open sections you can follow the straight line or not.
If you don't you can avoid enemies(or encounter new ones),or get new stuff and info. Also enemies don't respawn so if you clear an area you can explore freely.

It's very clear why Remedy scrapped GTA open-world like game and went with this "linear semi-open world game",it just wouldn't work.

an open world horror game would be the least scary thing on earth. but yeah...it's very linear. there are some open spaces where you can explore, but you're always pigeonholed into the next scene/event/action area.

edit: altho...i could see penumbra's type of gameplay being horrifying anywhere. that game is ridiculous.

Just finished episode 1. Pretty good so far. It plays great. The graphics are a mixed bag, though. Very blocky at times, and some of the textures are just embarrassingly bad. And the game has screen tearing.  :-\
But the game looks good if you don't pay attention to the details.

I don't like how the flashlight batteries are so easily depleted. Not really good promotion for the Energizer batteries. And why can't I aim without using the flashlight?

Gonna break it down to you, it's a good solid game. But the whole thriller talk from Remedy was straight garbage. This is pure Survival Horror. Instead of Zombies you have Darklings or some shit, and possessed stuff, that you fight with light and bullets.

It's fun, but it's not great or very exciting. It can be scary and tense, but because it does it so much, eventually it becomes an exercise, just like Resident Evil.

It's not as action focused as the latest Resident Evils, that were basically action games, but it's mostly an action game.

All that bullshit from Remedy about being inspired by Twin Peaks and whatever, is just that, bs. Because, story exposition gameplay or just plain setting exploration, and the whole thriller thing, comes in very very small packages that have big packages of nothing like that in between.

I do like the presentation, more games should approach this serialized mentality. Is it worth the full price? No, its not, at least for me so far. It just screams of missed opportunities left and right. Sometimes you really feel "Damn, somebody could make a cool X files game", and that's kind of the problem. Why Remedy took 6 years to make such a linear, one note (Action is very one dimensional with some bling added here and there) game, that doesn't even spend that much time actually developing characters and story, is just a pretty big question to me.

Wait till it hits 30$, you won't lose anything. Spend the saved money on something else, and leave this game for a weak month.

Seriously, after finishing GOW3, one thing i definitely appreciated was the lack of major artifacting during the game, which made transition between real time and video seamless.

Some of the textres are really reaaaaaally bad. You won't notice the bad texturing when it's nighttime in the game. Though they're still terrible when you get close to an object or a wall, etc.. The textures are especially bad during daytime.

Maybe it's  because of the resolution? I remember MGS4 also having bad textures all around. That was also a sub-hd game.

Lol at the topic title change.  ::)  :lol

I don't know man.

If i had to throw a number, 9 hours? There are 6 Episodes. I think Episode 3 is one of the longest.

I was glad that the game threw a couple of twists here and there, that broke the repetitive aspect of it. Story goes full moon on our asses though.

Not yet, sometime after game release date.

And one another thing, people should play this game on hard, nightmare is not available immediately.

Anything less than hard is basically a joke, hard and nightmare really change the game around.

I can't really hate it. I don't even mind the Wii-resolution or the N64-textures.

Funny about that, Eurogamer says theres like 2.5gb of data for this game :lol

Wow. So this means the whole "trilogy" is already finished. They just split the whole game in three parts each part being 2.5gb.
A full 360 game is around 7.5gb of data. Alan Wake 2 is probably finished already.

?

Some of the textres are really reaaaaaally bad. You won't notice the bad texturing when it's nighttime in the game. Though they're still terrible when you get close to an object or a wall, etc.. The textures are especially bad during daytime.

Maybe it's  because of the resolution? I remember MGS4 also having bad textures all around. That was also a sub-hd game.

Lol at the topic title change.  ::)  :lol

MGS4 did have some low-res textures.

N64 textures though? Shame on Remedy.
