How come everyone says the game looks nice overall but you two fools who act like only the 360 has sub-HD games?

RDR is terrible.

I liked GTA IV though.

Anyways, I'm thinking about holding off on UFC 2010 and picking up RDR instead. And I still want Mario Galaxy as well, but DAMN. My wallet is literally getting ass raped this month.

Bloodwake, most games will have some sort of sale the following week. By the time you get paid again, some store will be offering a gift card, a discount, or trade in offer on what game you're lookin for. Mario Galaxy is the only one that will never, ever drop in price.

Demi is spot on about that.  Mario Galaxy 1 is still full price after 3 years.  Galaxy 2 has $20 credit deals from most major online retailers (Gamestop, Amazon, Walmart) if you're worried about money.  The only negative is that Nintendo launches games on Sunday and things don't ship on Sunday.

There are deals for the other games too, like RDR has $20 credit at Amazon and Walmart, $10 at Gamestop.  Alan Wake has $10 credit on Amazon.  Gamestop also has an online deal where you spend $100+ on an order and you get 25% off.  Games are kinda cheap now.

Finished chapter 4 last night. I'm taking my time with this one. Playing one chapter every night. It took me around two hours to finish one chapter.
The game's really good. There's so much detail in the environments, it's crazy. Technically a very unpolished game, but I like everything* else.
And the game never gets scary. I expected a much scarier game. There are some shock moments, but they're very rare. The game has a very spooky atmosphere, though.

*except for Alan's stamnia. He's such a bitch. He gets tired way too fast and runs way too slow. The taken are pretty fast. So the chase sequences can get really frustrating if you run out of ammo.

whats the music like? Im hoping for some atmospheric, scary compositions? Im considering getting the CE as it has a t-shirt, soundtrack CD, avatar gear, premuim theme and DLC redemption token. Biggest draws here are the soundtrack and DLC included

Music is pretty good when it's there. There's usually no music during gameplay. Only when an episode ends or during a cutscene.

I've finished the game btw. It was really good. Very restricting though, very lineair. You can still see the design of the original concept of the game. A lot of roads are blocked by traffic or other stupid things, preventing you from roaming the world freely. The game only teases you by showing great landscapes and then preventing you from exploring them...

The endboss was very easy. The ending is really weird also. I still don't get it lol.  :-\

Sounds like my kind of game! I really enjoy focused linearity from time to time. I'll be getting RDR at the same time so I can feed my sandbox hunger there.

I love weird endings too! AC2 really pulled out the stops and it was AWESOME

There's been some good trade bonuses going on at GameStop, so I've managed to get BOTH games for no money out of pocket.

I would go with the Toys R' Us bonus but I don't have a Toys R' Us around. The nearest one is an hour away.

I am probably going to get Mario Galaxy later, once I have beaten these games.

Buy/Rent/Skip

What's the verdict, FatalT?

Rent. I rented it at 10:15 from Blockbuster, took it home and beat it at 6:30. Took it back and rented Red Dead Redemption. I guess it took me about 7 hours if you count all the times I stopped playing and took breaks.

jesus christ, this game has quite possibly the worst writing -- specifically the dialogue, exposition, and narrative -- in any recent horror game i've played. how do you make a game about a writer without EMPLOYING a writer i ask :smug

I wondered about that too, Prole - but some people are saying that the game is basically engaging in a bit of self-satire. And to be fair, it doesn't sound too far off from any Dean Koontz novel that the "prolific" author manages to shit out on a monthly basis.

So, yeah, I don't know if it's intentional or if someone at Remedy needs a few creative writing classes.

it's definitely supposed to be pulpy self-satire like Max Payne.  Doesn't totally excuse it though...Max Payne captured the feeling much better.  Maybe it's because Max was the archetypical character from a hard-boiled detective novel, so it was a pretty straight-forward character to write for.  Alan Wake is about the author possibly being the main character for his own pulpy psychological thriller novel that's taking place in real life.  It's a lot more convoluted and required a lot more creativity to be convincing, so that's why it's falling short.

besides, nothing could take MGS4's crown for worst writing :smug

You can enjoy the game the first time, then do the 2nd play (required) to use walkthroughs for collectables.

this game is so AWESOME. I pounded like 6 beers and played it hard last night. I lol'ed at the scene where Alan went bananas at that bitch in her vagina panties. It was so good.

Playing on hard, yeah its not that hard... hopefully Nightmare packs more of a challenge.

One gripe: I actually like the writing but I hate the pointless mentions of other horror/suspense classics. The Shining! Deliverance! Hitchcock! lame stuff
