You guys like Barry?  ???
He's very annoying and generic. I don't know what Remedy was thinking when they put him in the game. His "comic" persona doesn't fit the game.

Up to Episode 6 on Hard. What a great game! Looking foward to the Nightmare run becuase hard is cake. I dont get all the love for Barry, Im kind of indifferent towards him. Hes not a terrible character but not amazing either. :shrug

All you h8'ers comin in here sayin bubububu RDR is better, STFU. Ive got both games and they are both awesome. One thing Ive learned is you can play and enjoy more than 1 game!  :o

Whatever dudes. The comic relief in Barry feels very misplaced. I've never played a horror game that had a joke character in it. Especially not in a game that has a serious tone to it...
His jokes are inappropriate and feel forced. He's also ugly and very fat. Makes the character even more annoying to watch and hear.

Well, I liked the game. I just didn't like a few things in it.

pro's

- atmosphere
- graphics
- sound
- gunplay
- the story (chapters 1 to 4)

cons

- story (chapters 5 and 6)
- alan's shitty stamnia
- sometimes too repetitive
- misplaced comic relief

I'd probably rate the game at a 8,5/10

Well, I liked the game. I just didn't like a few things in it.

pro's

- atmosphere
- graphics are only sub-HD :teehee
- sound
- gunplay
- the story (chapters 1 to 4)

cons
- only on Xbox 360
- story (chapters 5 and 6)
- alan's shitty stamnia
- sometimes too repetitive
- misplaced comic relief
- not a PS3 exclusive
I'd probably rate the game at a 8,5/10 and 9.9/10 if it were on the PS3

I'm definitely enjoying the game.  It has its issues, but by and large, it's fantastic.  The combat feels surprisingly solid.  Hopefully the game introduces more than one enemy, though, as it is getting a bit repetitive.

It's a shame Remedy had so many issues with the engine, though.  It looks pretty nice, but the image quality is blurry and there is a shit ton of tearing.

How do you guys manage to burn the darkness off of the groups of like 10 though? Or does the flare auto burn it off?

yeah drop a flare, and combo it with the torch. you'll see circles getting smaller on the guys which is their darkness "life bar". The enemies flash when its time to start shooting. The tutorial spells it out all pretty clearly.

But if youre struggling with this game on normal, theres probably no hope for you. Alan Wake is CAKE

Honest suggestion: Have you considered going to YouTube and watching how other people play? Maybe you're doing something fundamentally wrong, or misunderstanding a core gameplay mechanic in a way that is so alien that we're unable to visualize it...?

Just run away.
I just ran away most of the time. The enemies fade away after you reach a save spot. You don't gain anything by beating the enemies.
When an enemy was near, I just flashed him so he would slow down and then continued running.

Finished the first chapter. Enjoyable so far.

The production values and art design and atmosphere are the best elements. The episode framing device is also very well done.

I sort of find myself wishing it had some true adventure gaming elements. That way exploring off the beaten path would be more useful rather than just collecting lame collectibles. It would also give some nice variety to the gameplay. Some chapters could be more adventure style. Others could be more action style.

Still enjoying so far although I'm early.

I just started too.  I just finished Episode 2 and so far I'll just agree with what Stoney said.  But in Episode 2 there was a long stretch of combat that was really boring and I'm hoping the game doesn't make combat the focus from here on.  The TV and radio programs are great too.

also, does this game have weird graphic glitches or is this a problem? when installing the game, my 360 sounded like a buzzsaw (compared to every other game I installed, including RDR last week, that was fairly normal).  Things like shadows appearing as a patch of dots at times or at times voices are out of sync with the faces (most noticeable with Alice, probably because her face looks weird, but it happens with others at times).  Actually, the way faces look and behave in this game are really weird with the worst being Alice.  Other than the faces the game looks great, especially the lighting.

btw, is the voice actor who plays Barry the same guy who played Joe Pesci in Bayonetta?

by the end i was pretty much done with the combat. i really just wanted to know what was gonna happen next.

what a strange and ambiguous ending indeed. kinda lame that it's designed to be left open so there can be dlc'd episodes. i'll probs just youtube for the story.

yeah, that and what fistful said is how I felt by the end.  It felt worse because of how bad the pacing was.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
combat seemed to go on forever and it felt pointless.  I wish they had more adventure stuff or puzzles in there to break it up, or some way to have more story.  At least in Episode 4 and 5 you had Barry and the Sheriff talking during those scenes.  Alan even stopped narration at one point and enemies no longer said funny stuff like talkin about omega 3 fatty acids.  Didn't help that most of the time it looks like you've been fighting in the same location since the start of the game.
[close]

But the game was pretty great.  Story, style, and all that were interesting and all the content on TV you could watch was great (like in Max Payne 2).  Episode 4 was the best part of the game, btw.

I'm somewhere towards the beginning of the 4th episode. I enjoy it but even at this stage the combat is getting a bit tiresome.

I enjoy it mainly because of the story and the tone and the theme. As far as the actual game parts of the game, I think they could have done a much better job.

What did you think of the stage battle Stoney?

It was terrific. That whole chapter was outstanding. It really gave the game a heart and soul. I have my complaints or issues with the game but you can tell Remedy really worked hard on the tone and theme of this game and you have to give them a lot of respect for that.
