^yeah.  great pacing and interesting new mechanics made it more enjoyable.  Plus enemies are ferocious and it is harder than the main game.  Not cheap hard like take less damage; it is more overwhelming and tense.

about the new mechanics:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Words in the world were in the last part of Alan Wake but now they're part of the action instead of just story progression.  It was cool to lure enemies next to a furnace, then highlight the word to burn them all.  You can say it is similar to exploding barrels or whatever, but the context makes it more interesting.  I won't spoil the other ways they mix it up later on since I think it is pretty cool.
[close]

I wish it was longer even though it was fairly long by DLC standard.  Definitely picking up the next DLC now.

also, about the story
spoiler (click to show/hide)
there isn't much there.  I still liked all the dreamy/nightmare/imagination theme.  Barry appearing as Alan Wake's impression of Barry and telling him things he already knew was neat.

The last dlc? Wasn't this game suppose to have more than 5 dlc's?
Don't think MS will ever fund a sequel. It was nice knowing you, Alan Wake.

If you can find a source saying so, I don't believe otherwise. All they had listed was the 2 DLC in the game.

Remedy's original plan was to release a Season 2 for Alan Wake. The first season consists out of 6 episodes.
So I thought the second season would also be 5/6 episodes long. With The Signal and The Writer being the first two DLC episodes of season 2, with more to come.

This is called rational thinking, not trolling.

Alan Wake 2 can be a Kinect game.  Alan decides his next book will be a children's coloring book.  If you stay inside the lines, Barry Wheeler will give you good marks.

Alan Wake would work way better on the Move, since the move could be your flash light and your gun.

alan wake could work way better on 3ds, the extra depth perception will enable you to do something interesting.

I finished the new DLC. I didnt really like this as much as The Signal. And it hardly answered anything. It was basically "well, SEQUEL LOL"

And unlike what Methodis said... Barry is very much in this. Just not as much as The Signal.

Also they make you do platforming, and a distinguished mentally-challenged part that could cause you to die from falling too high. Ruined my "dont die" achievement because of it.

The DLCs dont really proceed with the story. It's an "epilogue" - aka wait for Alan Wake 2

The DLC comes off as a side story that sets up Alan Wake 2 basically. I'd say only buy The Writer if you really liked the game, since it's short and not really worth $7.

My biggest problem with Alan Wake is how the characters and story are apparently so important to the game, but in the end I couldn't give a shit about anyone -- especially Wake's Mary Sue wife. Barry was entertaining at least.

so, The Writer isn't as good as The Signal? (unless I'm mixing them up)

I thought the main game was so-so, the first DLC was awesome, and haven't played the second dlc.

The Writer plays out in the same style as The Signal (lots of crazy shit happening), but they didn't execute it as well, I think. For one, there's a bunch of platforming segments in a game with the worst jumping controls I've ever seen in my life.

Still, it's not that much worse than the first DLC. If The Signal was an 8, I'd say The Writer is a 7.

^ WRITER SPOILERZ
spoiler (click to show/hide)
But did we really find out who/what Mr Scratch is? We found Alan was "separated" into two separate beings while trapped in the Dark Place, but when Alan asks Zane if thats Mr Scratch in the cabin Zane just kinda trails off... still heaps of loose ends. I hope Alan Wake 2 isn't far off.

The Writer was decent but not as good as The Signal. Also much shorter. Finished it in about 30 minutes which aint great value for 560 points. Still need to run both DLCs for collectibles and no death runs for my 1500/1500, I'll do it when I get bored and feel like going back to Alan Wake.

So, the entire game we've been playing as Mr. Scratch? Would have been nice if things were just a tad more clear but I appreciate mystery

The words are a major part of both the DLCs, and the ending is elaborated on a lot more in the DLCs. From the sounds of your comments you owe it to yourself to invest in them. The Signal is the best episode in the game, and The Writer is solid but not as good as Signal or Chapter 4.

Just as a general rule, I measure DLC purchases in coffee. I drop a little over 3 bucks on coffee without even thinking about it. I'll buy a big latte and a scone, and suddenly I'm dropping 7 bucks on a snack. If a game has DLC, and I think I'll enjoy it more than a coffee and scone, I'd buy it.

1200 or 1600 spacebucks gets me thinking about how much coffee I could be drinking instead of playing the DLC, but those 400 and 800 point purchases are pretty easy to swallow, so to speak.

Whenever you buy DLC, you're putting a larger percentage of money in the publisher/developer's coffers than a retail purchase. If you like the game, it's another way to make sure the dev stays in business. IIRC Alan Wake didn't sell as well as everyone hoped, right?

Considering it spent so much time in the oven AW had to sell millions to recoup afaik.

It did OK, not a total bomb I don't think. They could shit out a sequel pretty easily for a lot less money now.

I'm happy I paid for the DLC, considering I got the Writer for free which was awesome.

And of course, the points have gone towards my 2400 for the rebate. I think I've already passed the 2400 mark. woot.

Somebody spotted some job listing thing where it said remedy was looking to hire for a new 360 project. While Alan Wake didn't sell a ton it probably makes a lot more sense to do a sequel there which I'm guessing is what that project is since they've already got the engine and world setting down instead of creating some new IP and going off on another 5 year adventure. I don't think MS would be to keen on that either.

Yeah, and there's also the matter of Alan Wake as a brand, which would be silly to walk away from after one installation, especially since the initial entry didn't bomba.

BUMP!

Just finished both pieces of DLC. I enjoyed these pieces of content more than the actual game itself. They are focused and very fun. They have really awesome storytelling devices with Zane as the floating diver and seeing FMV Alan Wake crazily narrating the events of the DLC. Those were so good.

I also really enjoyed the "floating word" mechanic as it gets around the need to explain why there's tons of ammo everywhere.

In The Writer, the Ferris wheel section was really cool.

Now I'm definitely not going to skip American Nightmare.
