X360 question #2
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:42:48 PM »
I got my X360 VGA cable in the mail today from monoprice.  When I hook it up to my 1080p monitor through VGA the picture is bonkered.

Everything is imaged a few times over to the side.  The colors are also shit.  Has anyone heard of this before?  Did I get a bunk cable or maybe the VGA port on my X360 is broke?  It's a launch model and I've just been using component on my TV which works perfect.

launch 360?

my launch 360 in that same resolution looks like a blurry POS. pisses me off and I don't know why. Do you NEED to have a HDMI type 360 to even get 1080p with vga?

for the colors try the "extended" settings.

i've read about this recently on gaf, long story short: vga is analog, get the official cable from ms.

lemme find the thread...

Sounds like monoprice cables are shit.  I might be out $13 unless they'll accept returns and give me my money back.

I don't want to pay for the official cable.  It's so overpriced :(

:o  That wasn't there the other day when I looked.  Anyhow I ordered that.  Don't see how a used cable would perform any worse.

Monoprice has full refund but I gotta pay S&H.  So I'll probably lose about $6 total upgrading to that used official cable.  If the picture actually WORKS this time that'll be ok I guess.

Is there any real advantage in having the console doing the upscaling if it's still mostly 720P content?

console scaler >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> monitor scaler.

I'm still playing my X360 games on my tv.  I'm just doing this so I can play X360 shmups in tate mode by rotating my monitor.  My TV weighs 200 pounds so I've never been able to do that :(

from what i read, it depends on your tv but 360 scaler is pretty good so making it do the upscaling might be better.

and less tv lag i guess.

I have march 2006 360,official cable, playing it on 1440x900 monitor and picture quality is simply beautiful, never had problems with it,everything is crystal clear.
That looks to me like multiple reflections in a cable, you have one strong signal and a lot of smaller ones that arrive later.
Also extended settings is a must for PC monitors,it was implemented because of them.

also how do I turn off my monitor scaling and do console scaling?
You can't,monitor(unless you have a crt one) will always scale if not fed with native content.Solution is,feed him with native resolution.

Meh, it was $13, but I guess 6 of that was shipping (wtf, seems high)?  If I spend $3-4 at a post office to send it back they will refund me $7.  :(

$13 for old one + $18 for new one = still cheaper than $33 for a new official cable I guess  :-\

Got my official cable today.  It's perfect.  No issues with image quality, it came with a stereo to monitor speaker in dongle and the cord itself is longer than the ghetto one so I don't have to move my j360 out of its sitting area.

I tried Raiden Fighers Aces cause I won't have mushihime futari until next week and the extra resolution in tate mode is nice...but then I tried it in non-tate on my CRT for direct comparison and the 34" CRT kicked the shit out of the vertical 23" LCD.  So I guess I'll stick to playing all my shmups in non-tate on my CRT hdtv.  Oh well, it was an interesting experiment and if I move somewhere for a temp period of time in the next few years I can just bring my monitor and play my X360 through VGA and PS3 through HDMI now.

Oh and I tried tate mode on my crt and :O it was better than being in the arcades.  HUGE and insane and perfect pixely IQ.  But I can't play with my head turned and I can't turn my 200 pound tv vertically so lol, not gonna happen!  I'd be pretty interested down the line though to pick up a big ass CRT with component or HDMI or DVI in solely for shmups and keep it vertical.  Would be epic.
