The game doesn't have anything scary going on besides the escape sequences. But I think removing the escape sequences wouldn't have hurt the game, at all.
The current approach with the monster is pretty bad. The idea is nice, but it gets boring and repetitive. You basically just run away, climb and smash through the doors during those sequences. Repeat x1000. And all the envirnoments look the same. Hiding is a waste of time since the monster will spot you amost instantly. Just keep on running until you smashed through the right door.

I think the game would've been better if the escape sequence were planned/scripted. The current mechanics are a mess. You can get lost during escapes and the monsters are so annoying when they attack you in a group. You just can't escape when they do that. And I didn't even try because the Wii control swinging was straining my arms after a few tries. I always let myself get killed when they ambushed me.

Awesome game.

Beat it a few weeks ago, and I'll say that it is one of the best third-party efforts for the Wii, probably the best. Worth the purchase, absolutely.

This game has gotten so much mixed reviews.  Some absolutely love it and others can't stand it.

The story is the only decent thing, mostly for the ending... but it's still overall "made for MTV". It's just the gameplay is TRASH. People who say its like a PnC never played them, for one.

It's not a point and click adventure, but I definitely wouldn't call its gameplay trash. Granted, it takes some practice to shake off the monsters in the nightmare world but I didn't have any problems with it as I got accustomed to things. I wish I could get into more depth about this or at least paste my original impressions but I'm on my BB right now.

Personally, I think it's one of the best survival horror adventure game this generation has seen. The story and the various endings were fantastic, the Wii-mote flashlight functionality was superb, and the pacing was almost perfect. Old SH fans might have some misconceptions about the game, and as a result some grudges, but having never played a SH before this one offers me a fresh and different perspective.

Yeah, even though the first hour gave me a mixed impression of some good, some bad.  As a SH fan I have to play this.  It's my next Wii game to get through after I finish up world 9 NSMB.

the atmosphere in the game is excellent, and if you just take your time to really explore the world and play with some decent headphones i guarantee your enjoyment of the game will go way up.

The best looking part in the game is definitely

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Lisa's appartment, especially the kitchen. That part looked really great
[close]

But the game didn't really blow me away like the previous SH games when it comes to atmosphere. And the linearity of the game really takes away what made the first SH games so great. Sure, the original SH games are somewhat linear, too. But this is much worse. You basically just go from A to B and don't do other shit besides that. The original game also had a much larger map that you could explore.

A real SH remake would've been a so much better game that this "reimagining"

Shattered memories will be the first game I put on my GameFly list since I've had the service.

I don't know how off the top of my head. Searching for that kind of stuff always gives me a headache as you tend to end up bouncing around from site to site looking for instructions.

Beat the game a few weeks ago. Probably the best pure survival horror game this generation. If you want to play an action game with uninspiring monsters, pick up RE5; if you want to play a true next-gen horror game cut from the same cloth as RE1 and Alone in the Dark, then Shattered Memories is your game.

I posted the Giant Bomb link just to get a rise but I'm legit interested to play the game and that doesn't happen very often with me on Wii games. I'm fine with removing shitty combat from a series that always had shitty combat and focusing more on the story. I only really played Silent Hill for the atmosphere anyway. I view it roughly as an adventure game.

I probably won't get around to getting it on Gamefly until Feb though.

RE5 has uninspired monsters? Silent Hill wii has one fucking monster type.

Copy and paste x100

That's the only monster you'll see in the game.  :lol

This new Silent Hill has the worst monster design in a SH game so far.

The chases are horrible. But that's thanks to the shitty execution. The controls and level design are just awful during those sequences.

So lets see, besides running in convoluted hallways, what else does this game provide

- walking
- shining flashlight
- solve a puzzle

Amazing game

The game is pretty good. You're just mad now because you got a lame Game Over in Bayonetta.

That ending. Damn

Overall I would score the game a 3.5/5. But my opinion of it is higher than the score. The score is brought down due to the fairly lame chase sequences. I really enjoyed everything else tho.

I'm going through a second time to really test the psychology aspect by choosing radically different answers than my first run through. Wanna see how different the game turns out to be.

I did that accidentally (I'm slightly color-blind) the first time I played.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
You go into the therapy session (which, tellingly, is about guilt and inevitable death) right after you give her the pills and before you leave the apartment, not after you get back like usual. Lisa's phone call is much more frantic, asking if you did something wrong and she's screaming a lot.

Also, you find Lisa already dead on the couch with a lot more blood splattered on her face and couch, instead of still alive and starting to bleed. A bottle full of the wrong pills you gave her is spilled all over the coffee table, and she's got a couple of them in her hand.
[close]

Also the chase sequences got easier the second time through since I figured out you're supposed to do a shoving or elbowing motion with your controller still facing forward, rather than shaking the controller in a certain direction like in most Wii games.

picked this up on the cheap a week ago and just finished it.

I really liked it.  Its almost a pure adventure game, there's some really cool usage of your very handy in-game cell phone and the way its integrated into the game world is pretty cool.  If it weren't for a dearth of clever puzzles (which number only a few), and with that, an utter lack of difficulty, this would have been a wholly satisfying game.  As is, its still pretty good, the good ideas outwheigh the not always great execution of them.

The graphics are also not shitty, which, for a Wii game, is an admirable achievement.  My biggest actual complaint would be that its not actually that scary, it trades terrifying for eerie.  Its a solid game and I'd love to see the series continue in this way (it won't), more focused on environmental exploration, storytelling and puzzle solving vs. thunking a monster with a pipe.  But then again, I waited a year and a half to play it, didn't I?
