It's easy and lacks any creativity. It's plain jane. Retro is appreciated but the overall design is flat.

I wouldn't mind the 8bit visuals if they didn't didn't look worse than even first two Mega Man games. At least get some better pixel artists if you're going to make this a trend for the series.

I really wish they'd go the Pac-Man CE route with these types of games.  Use 8-bit pixels, but throw in trippy effects.  It was cool to see MM9 done like this, but now it's like they are just going back to the NES rehashes of yesteryear.  Make something new.

This is fucking distinguished mentally-challenged.

Why is it that Mega Man Star Force is the only real series left with story?

They're just raping the original series to appeal to old farts who moved on years ago. Mega Man was about the CHALLENGE! SPIKES! CHEAP KILLS! YEAHHHH!

Mega Man 8 finishes, we have no god damn clue what happened other than Duo flies off. But no, let's take back the graphics 25 years, rape you for DLC if you want to slide and cock block anyone from ACTUALLY FUCKING TYING TOGETHER X and Mega Man.

Yes! Sell themes for $2.50 on the PS3! Want an extra level? PAY MONIES! Slide? Pay to play as PROTOMAN. Take out features that were in Mega Man & Bass? You BETCHA! LAUNCH-DAY DLC? Of course!

God dammit, this is infuriating. (Yes, I'm still protesting MM9, until there's a single bundle it sells for)

Hell, Star Force is getting a cross-over game with Battle Network. That's going to be awesome! But they still ignore the X series, after X8 got it right. Legends is aborted in the water, aside from the PSP ports. Zero ended, but ZX is just a confusing androgynous mess.

And let's not forget, MMX Collection actually had content REMOVED because it was put into Maverick Hunter X, which was to be a full series, and that died, along with MMPU.

But yes, let's go back to Classic Mega Man and not tie up any loose ends.

So, they have all this cool shit, from X8, 8, Command Mission and Network Transmission and...

we're back to Sheep Man again?

Oh god, I'd trade it all for MML3. But that's a lost cause to me. At the VERY FUCKING LEAST I thought MM9 would actually take place between MM8 and X, but I couldn't even get THAT wish. No, it's a brainless story somewhere between 4 and 5. And it sounds like this one is, too.

Cool.  MM9 was fun.  I still don't get the appeal of the fake-retro stuff and thought it was lame with MM9.  Not so much just in the 8-bit style (graphics whores can't accept that the game could still be great without graphics from the 80s) but the fake wacky intentionally bad box art.

one of the last times I actually talked to randoms on XBL (years ago), some guy recited the run down of series...and what's canon, what isn't etc.  it was sad.

Then again, people try to fit the zelda and mario games into a timeline and other people write stories about Sonic and Tails eating out each other's asses, so it's not all that surprising.

MM9 was no harder than other MM games, it's just that we've played most of them before and remember what to do.  Give a complete n00b a chance to try MM9 and something like MM5 and they'll probably find the difficulty level to be pretty similar.

MM9 seems tough at first, but once you get used to the stages you can easily clear the game without dying.

I never understood the 2.5D craze myself.  I've always found most 2.5 platformers to be very "floaty" and not nearly as tight with controls as sprite-based games.  Other than looking better (often worse), I've found them to be worse than sprite games.  Megaman is all about having tight controls and response, which you're guaranteed to have with the 8bit style.

Anyone who wants to play a 3D-style oldskool Megaman game should be forced to play X7 forever.  These things just don't work, if they change it too much then it won't be a Megaman game (similar to how that crap Vectorman PS2 game was looking).  Megaman Legends got it right by using the 3D view to take on a whole different direction for the series.

Drac X Chronicles, MMX PSP, MM Powered Up, Bionic Commande Rearmed are 2.5D games modeled after existing 2D games, and they play perfectly fine/same as original games.  Using 3D models and stuff is probably just cheaper than creating new sprites and all that.

Immensely easier. 2D animation requires hand drawing every frame. 3D animation requires one skinning, then you move the bones on keyframes and blend. Plus it's easier to render, as you don't need to load every possible sprite at once.

I didn't play the Megaman PSP games, but Drac X and Bionic Commando aren't exactly what I would consider beautiful games.  If anything, the 2.5D shit took away from the game, there were some parts in BC where it was difficult to see what I was doing due to some stupid lighting effect.  The game was pretty well-made otherwise, but the loose gameplay works for the series.  Drac X was functional but the controls didn't really seem that "tight", which is a problem I always see with 2.5D games.

Really, I find most 2.5D games to be ugly, the models are usually not very attractive and the backgrounds stand out too much.  Hell, look at the upcoming Sparkster game, give me a "retro rebirth" of that any day.  Konami has done really well with their "rebirth" series, the games play very well, that's all that matters.  Compare that to the new Sparkster crap that's coming out.  With sprites, there's no floaty physics or ugly 3d models to have to look at.

The only 2.5D game I've played that I can remember having good art direction and controls is that PS2 Contra game, which unfortunately had bad gameplay decisions.  I don't understand why so many people want these 2.5 games other than for the sake of incorporating 3d for no reason.

I've always found it strange that although most big companies stay away from sprite-based games, the majority of indie games use them.  Can it really be that expensive?

Just look at the Fez example given above.  Doesn't seem like it's releasing soon and it's been shown for a while, or that furry 2D Action game for XBLA.  Indie games use them, they just take a long time for one project.

Personally I don't care much for 2.5d nor do I care for trying to replicated graphics from the 80s.  I think the best balance is what games like Space Invaders Extreme, Pacman CE, Holy Invasion Badman, etc. do by taking 8-bit and giving it style.

Yeah, I think that's a pretty good direction for the 2D genre to take, get the best of both worlds.  Kind of unfortunate that no one's really pushing for that sort of evolution, and instead going towards 2.5D.  Has there even been a spiced up 2D platformer released yet?  Heh, a Metroid game like that could be very nice...

MM9 was awesome. It captured the feel of the NES games pefectly but the level design blew the older ones out of the water. Very excited for 10.

Megaman has sucked ever since he left 8 bit, except maybe X1-3. I think Capcom is making the right choice.
