I wonder if you take Steam sales in addition to retail sales, if Dragon Age outsold or is close to the number of Xbox 360 copies sold. I know I slag on PC gaming, but I would honestly be a little shocked if the console port pushed more units.

PC retail titles chart, but they obviously don't track sales from DD services (almost none of which release any real numbers).

Crushed is right, Stony Mason is horribly wrong.

Fair enough. I thought a few years ago they tracked them separately but I certainly could be wrong on both accounts.

It's not spinning that much, most companies would care more about revenue than unit sales.

But it cannot be even close to what they had forecasted.

I'm kind of disappointed that it didn't sell better on the 360 to be honest.  Oh well, the pc version IS better.

Xbox 360 also led games sales in November, with four of the top ten console games with third party titles selling “more on Xbox 360 last month than on the other current generation platforms combined.”

A man after my own heart.

I so love people like this

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=18833077&postcount=568

I've always enjoy sales numbers for the same reason I love sports stats. It's interesting to dispassionately observe trends and movements of a hobby I like.

But when you put your heart and soul into wishing that a piece of hardware or software justifies your love or your world view based on sales numbers. You deserve to be mocked endlessly.

Also Wii is the true beast.

Quote
"While there has been a lot of focus on Wii sales as compared to last year, the system was still the best-selling console system by a margin of 54%. At this same point in the PS2 lifecycle, the PS2 was down in unit sales by 23% over the previous year, but as history has shown, it continues to have a great deal of life left in it. So focusing on a comparison to Wii's stellar 2008 performance masks the reality of just how well this system is selling."

Actually, they're both right: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/spore/news.html?sid=6240125

NPD charts PC retail titles and does so separately from the console/handheld titles.

The best part about all the fanboy tears is the insistence of some people that the PlayStation 3 is going to overtake the Xbox 360 in terms of sales... eventually. Microsoft is moving towards their fifth year with the Xbox 360, do they really care at this point?

i think they would have gotten some more if a PS3 version existed since the sony fans would love to buy it regardless.

But the cost to get it running good enough could have been a factor.

i dont get it either since the US gap is too large IMO, they should be glad that the PS3 is still selling enough hardware and getting games.

Valve should have turned L4D1 into an XBLA game like they did with Portal.  There is probably appeal in having it on your HD at all times.

that's actually a bad idea.  I can't think of something else to edit in to hide it.

at 120-fucking-dollars, those sales for Tony Hawk are phenomenal.  If it had debuted at a mere 30 bucks cheaper I can guarantee it would have sold at least twice as much.

If Activision didn't have MW2 to carry them this season, they'd be drowning in red ink over Tony Hawk and DJ Hero.

If they really wanted it to succeed they'd quit licensing out blu-ray tech and have the PS3 be the only player on the market.

That was the best post at GAF today, someone posted something along the lines of:

"So I guess Uncharted was... uncharted." :lol

To be fair, Uncharted 2 is seriously the first legitimate first-party title that Sony has released and lived up to the hoopla. If it was released on the Xbox 360, it probably would have sold a billion copies. Certainly as many as Dragon Age, which charted in the Top 10.

Uncharted 2 is a legit great game. (I would characterize that as distinctly different than some of the other franchises like Resistance or Killzone 2 which are good games, not great games that Sony fans tried to overboost to compete with the 360)

It's sold about as well as sony exclusives tend to sell this gen. Which is way below what 360 exclusives tend to sell.

Things start to reach the annonying level when people start trying to post in a manner of what other people should buy and be interested in.

Each platform fanboy has their unique quirks.

The Sony fanboy quirk is absolutely utter rage at a universe they can't comprehend. They have the more powerful system this time, and finally the good games at a somewhat reasonable price and they are still getting beat. It drives them insane.

Were people in the NPD prediction thread expecting the PS3 to win, is that the source of the outrage? I figured it would be assumed that MS would take the month, what with MW2 being so tightly connected to the brand.

This does mesh with the "musings" thread; plenty of PS3s sold, not so much software. Shame about Uncharted 2 not doing better, but I'm guessing it's about on par with expectations. There's just this weird, massive gap between good retail performance and stuff like MW, Halo or GTA (or whatever strange hits Nintendo has), and no PS3 exclusive will ever do that well.

Sony cockteased fans with bragging about its Black Friday numbers, so a NPD victory seemed like a slam dunk. I didn't really get it either, because I believe I stated just last month that Call of Duty is pretty much synonymous with Xbox at this point.

I mean, if the Best Buy and Wal-Mart ads were to be believed, Modern Warfare 2 wasn't even released for the PlayStation 3.

In the end, this proves what I said all along, that Microsoft has the strongest platform for online content, which has been the catalyst for sales this generation. Sony could offer free handjobs, and it'd still be in second place.

That said, we need Sony to exist and thrive, so that gamers can force Microsoft to offer Xbox Live for free one day.

The thing is although it's stupidly complicated for no good reason it does have the higher top end. There are no 360 games that will look as good as Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2. (Although for the majority of games the 360 version is better when it comes to multiplatform stuff which is where the bulk of software is going to be sold so arguably it's a moot point anyway)

What these people (and a certain bulk of the PC audience never seems to get) is that pure graphics power is immaterial. It's why the PS 2 beat its rivals. It's why historically having the best graphics means jack shit. Because normal people just play and enjoy games they like. They don't do Digital Foundry style wanking over textures.

Were people in the NPD prediction thread expecting the PS3 to win, is that the source of the outrage? I figured it would be assumed that MS would take the month, what with MW2 being so tightly connected to the brand.

Almost no one picked 360 over PS3 this month. Especially on the analyst side. That lead to increased expectations from the fanboys who care about such things.

Why do people always say things like this? Of course there will be a Xbox 360 game that looks better than those two, and there are some that'd argue that Killzone 2 is no graphical bar either.

We shall see. I don't think it will happen and honestly it doesn't matter if it happens or not which is my larger point. The best graphics don't matter. They never have and they never will. Some 360 fanboys are embarrassed to admit that Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2 look better than stuff on the 360. They shouldn't be. Who cares? It doesn't matter. The games that people want to play at the price that people want to pay is what matters.

Added with the fact that MS's reaction to their BF numbers were not as enthusiastic (to be fair it possibly wasn't and the overall month made them the victor).

It would be interesting if they had the same features as live and still be free, would it change.

I'd rather see Sony get throttled to the point where we end up with one (proper) console future. They have made enough blunders this generation that they have well earned their spot, but I'd hate to lose the network of talented studios that the company has.

Whatever though, it's a bit weird talking doom and gloom when the numbers are what they are, I'm just getting fed up with having to support multiple systems.

Dude, Stoney Mason, I like you and all, but the argument that "game on console x will always look better than game on console y" never pans out, unless one sticks around significantly past the other's lifespan. That's just fanboy poppycock.

A developer will come along and always use the hardware to make a better looking game, regardless of the platform.

I already stated that I think a proper consortium that creates standard hardware specifications for consoles is the only way for the industry to avoid a catastrophic meltdown down the line. The system that is currently in place is not sustainable, for manufacturers or publishers. It was largely prevented this time around, but that's just because the software side consolidated instead of folded.

Fanboys can even having their pissing arguments, warring over which manufacturer makes the highest quality system and has superior multimedia support.

I'm kinda with Stoney here, Willco. Most 360 game run on the Unreal engine whereas U2, KZ2 , and other Sony exclusives run their own individually.

I'll say it doesn't matter. Whether the 360 has games that look as good as the best on the PS3 doesn't matter. To normal people the graphics on both consoles look the exact same. For the hardcore crowd, whether it's true or not, or whether it is only the case for the moment or forever, there is a perception that the top end PS3 games look better than the top end 360 games. I'm saying either way it's a completely moot argument.

Modern Warfare 2 doesn't look as good as Killzone 2 and it just outsold it lifetime in probably a few days. The only part I'm really arguing is that there is too much attention on the graphics as the sole reason why people play games. When genre, frame rate, tone, theme, innovation, past product history, etc all play a part. It doesn't matter which one has the better graphics. For 95% of the buying audience there is no appreciable difference or it doesnt matter if there is.

I don't think I disagreed that Uncharted 2 looks pretty baller right now, but you're kidding yourself if you think there won't be anything developed for the 360 that will exceed it. It's just a matter of time.

I remember when folks said PS2 would never touch Xbox, but that got disproven.

I agree with what you're trying to say, Stoney, but I can't swallow conclusive statements like that.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks Banjo: Nuts and Bolts is the best looking game so far this gen. Granted I haven't played Uncharted 2 yet, but it at least looks better than Grayscale: The Game.

I'm with Stoney Mason too.  None of the big 360 games are really graphics beasts, and no one actually cares.  I still remember playing the Forza 2 demo at a friends house on a crappy 30-some inch SD TV from some eastern euro company, and they were all saying how great the game looked.  Who am I to tell them otherwise.

Banjo Nuts and Bolts ran really poor, though.  That's one thing that pisses me off.  It's nice and all to make a game look great, but not if it won't run at a solid 30 and be chugging like crazy.  KZ2 chugged a lot too, and that's one reason why Uncharted 2 is so impressive.  It's not just that the game looks great, there is no tearing, great image quality, and a solid 30 at all times.

Uncharted 2 is better looking than Banjo. Hell, everything is better looking than Banjo. Banjo-Kazooie XBLA is better looking than Nuts and Bolts.
