I thought this year was pretty bad. I think I spent more time listening to The Beatles remasters more than anything. Here are the only albums I enjoyed and purchased released this year:

Speaking of the Beatles remasters, mono or stereo?

Cause I'm a bit wary of the "we just invented stereo and omg the drums are all on the right and the guitar's all on the left or did I just blow your mind!?" thing that happens with oldies.

I thought the stereo mixes were incredibly well done, but mono offers a different listening experience. That said, for casual listening, I'd personally recommend stereo. The mono mix is kind of neat in a purist, lift-your-pink-while-you-listen way.

Well, if you're buying them, it's going to be next to impossible to find the mono set, which are admittedly better.  It goes like this:

Mono: Please Please me -> Revolver
Stereo: Everything after that

Make a judgement call about Sgt. Peppers, because some songs sound amazing in mono on that album, yet so do some of the stereo mixes.

I'll make my post in this thread tomorrow, but I already know it's been ruined by Muse.

Speaking of the Beatles remasters, mono or stereo?

Cause I'm a bit wary of the "we just invented stereo and omg the drums are all on the right and the guitar's all on the left or did I just blow your mind!?" thing that happens with oldies.

This is the most uninformed piece of shit post i've ever read on this forum.

Please do your research. Here's a list of every disrepency between mono and stereo, each version has songs that song completely different, in different keys etc.

http://www.columbia.edu/~brennan/beatles/var-format.html

It's reading shit like brand news post that makes me puke as a die hard beatles fan. Nothing could be even further from the truth. There is no "better" version. Each version has variations pretty much in every song except for Abbey Road and Let It Be.

Don't listen to weekend warrior Beatles fans. If you HAVE to choose on just one, ask yourself these questions:

A. Am I listening with Headphones or speakers?
B. Do I enjoy how they were originally heard, or originally visioned?
C. Do I care that each set is different almost in every song?

If you answer the following:
A: Headphones
B:Visioned
C: No

then get the Stereo. The mono will sound muddy and underwater with headphones.

But check out that link and make a informed decision. Don't listen to drabble like Brand New's fucking stupid post.

Oh, and the mono discs have nicer production, as they're identical replications of the original LP's, while the stereo one has all the documentaries compiled on one disc (which is terrible, not worth the price I paid for it).

Only albums I've listened to from this year are the Them Crooked Vultures debut and Further Complications, both are great although TCV kind of just sounds like a Queens of the Stoneage record :P

And yeah I have the mono and stereo boxsets and listen to both pretty much equally other than a few select preferences.

Go suck a cock, asshole.  What crawled up your ass and made you decide to be a neverending cuntfuck?  What I said doesn't necessarily refute what you're posting.  From all my listens of the mono sets, through listening parties and my own, headphone driven playthroughs, stereo mixes for the early albums sounds like shit.  In those early albums, it's hard to call ANY of the stereo mixes better at all, the tracks and separation are fucking horrid and reek of "wow, a new technology, let's do a half-assed job with this."  Have you even fucking listening to the stereo mixes of the early shit?  It's EXACTLY what Mandark is iffy with.

When you get into Sgt. Peppers, it really is a fucking judgement call: I prefer the mono due to the better transitions (particularly from Good Morning to Sgt Peppers Reprise), and the mono version of She's Leaving home.

Everything after that, I prefer stereo because they got BETTER at the separation and richness of the sound.  I believe they legitimately sound better than the mono sets.

Eat a dick man.  Yeah, you're such a real Beatles fan because you think you know every goddamn thing about the production of the albums, but when it all comes down to it, it's what sounds good to someone.

And yet you have no idea what you're talking about. ""wow, a new technology, let's do a half-assed job with this."" Does your idiocity ever end? There's a reason why the Help mono mix comes with the stereo mix too.

What mono transitions? Almost all of them are cut short and are rougher. God you're an idiot.

WRONG. Help is certainly better, and while I personally perfer the mono versions of the other, there entirely fucking different albums that you can't even compare.

And you said you attend listening parties. That's the gayest shit in the world. Five bucks say's you held some girls hand during "I Wanna Hold Your Hand".

Heres another site for you brand new so you can learn what real differences there is. The other one has all the stereo vs mono bullshit but this one tells how fucked up each mix is

So?  The separation still sounds distracting.

What the shit are you talking about?  I'm beginning to think you know just as little as apparently I do.  The transition of Good Morning to Sgt. Peppers Reprise ring a bell?  Within You Without you to When I'm Sixty Four?  Shorter and rougher my ass, now you're making things up because you can't stand that I prefer the mono mix.

And I will fully say with certainty that I have a hard time listening to the stereo mixes of the early albums, as do MOST people here.  It's fucking distracting.  Get your dick out of your ass: just because you think you know everything about every miniscule detail about every tracks recording and mastering process doesn't mean you know for sure which version people like.  I made a casual post for Mandark telling him my opinion about the stereo mixes for the albums, not thinking anybody would look twice, and you nerd rage because I didn't spew official Beatles PR for the bullshit.  Yeah, you're a true fan.  ::)

So, those Beatles remasters were awesome, huh guys?

I haven't really listened to a lot in the past few months, but my favorite album was probably Passion Pit's addition, although I would honestly give the Beatles remasters my nod anyways since that's basically what I listened to the most.

That's a damn good list, distant.  That Camera Obscura album was on repeat for about 2 hours during my 8 hour drive a couple days ago.  :)

My biggest disappointment of 2009 would have to be DOOM's album, Born Like This. Long anticipated, much delayed albums that sounds like they were thrown together during the span of a couple weeks just rub me the wrong way. There are some great tracks on there but most of the songs and beats were recycled, with slight changes that made some songs worse (like the obnoxious drums on Angelz).

I guess I just opened myself up to hypocrisy charges though: OB4CLII features more than a few recycled, old beats as well. But I'd say it's very hard to deny Raekwon destroyed nearly every beat on the album with precision. Can't be said of DOOM on Born Like This.

Other disappointments:
-Madvillainy 2 didn't come out. Madlib released so much amazing material this year, I really can't wait to hear what he gave DOOM this time.

-Jay Electronica didn't release anything. I rarely get uber excited over any upcoming album or artist but I'm totally on the hype train for Jay. He's one of the few rappers who seems to put time and dedication into every line, and rarely wastes ink. I can't fucking wait to hear what he has.

Bloc Party's new album was a piece of shit, too. Silent Alarm was brilliant, and they've gotten worse with each subsequent album.

I enjoyed the new Pearl Jam album, Backspacer.  I think that's the only new music I bought this year, alongside with a bunch of the Beatles remasters.
