Tom Chick's 10 most overrated games of 2009
« on: December 14, 2009, 11:51:09 AM »
Stolen from the NeoGAF.

Quote
It's December, which means it's time to roll out the year-in-review lists. We'll look over the overlooked, move on to the the disappointing, and finally celebrate the best.

But first, here are the most overrated games of 2009. Many of the following ten games are good. I would call a couple of them great. However, I think they're the most overrated games of the year for the simple fact that I'm surprised at how well received they were. I wouldn't recommend any of these without a few important caveats.

Read the 10 most overrated game of 2009 after the jump.

10. Demon's Souls
I love this game, and I am astonished that so many other people do as well. It's dark, oppressive, unglamorous, and often an exercise in fear and frustration. It is nearly the exact opposite of what most people look for in videogames. There aren't many people to whom I would recommend Demon's Souls.

9. Empire: Total War
There are so many things wrong with Empire: Total War, and almost none of them are mentioned in the glowing praise this game got because it was epic and pretty. As an interactive cut scene, Empire: Total War does a great job. As a strategy game, it's insulting.

8. Killzone 2
Generic shooter is generically generic. Even middling shooters like Wolfenstein and FEAR 2 were better than this warmly received forgettable sci-fi pap.

7. Infamous
In a year that saw three of the finest open world games ever made (four, if you count Batman: Arkham Asylum), why would you bother with this passable combat game that does such a middling job of world-building and a flat-out horrible job of storytelling?

6. Plants vs. Zombies
You'd never guess from all the enthusiasm that this is "just" a tower defense game. Sure, it's full of adorable twists and variations. But it is still "just" a tower defense game. Unlike Popcap's other insidiously addictive creations - Bejeweled and Bookworm, for instance, are for everyone - Plants vs. Zombies requires that you have whatever gene makes tower defense games tolerable.

5. Scribblenauts
Cute concepts are cute. But the really challenging bit is building a game around them. cf. Little Big Planet.

4. Forza 3
Two years ago, when it was called Forza 2, this would have been a fantastic racer. Instead, it looks a little dated, it has lousy campaign progression, and it's missing that visceral bite that makes the lastest great racing games so good.

3. Modern Warfare 2
Although this may very well be the best multiplayer game of the year, I am flabbergasted that anyone over the age of 12 thinks there's anything deep, insightful, or even relevant about the single player storyline in general and the airport massacre in specific. Modern Warfare 2 is an unimaginative retread that only stands out because Infinity Ward has no compunction about relying on tasteless shock value to whore for publicity they don't even need.

2. New Super Mario Bros Wii
This could very well be a "me" problem, but when I play these traditional Mario games, I go cold. Platformers have come so far in terms of gameplay, graphics, and even narrative. But these Mario games are built almost entirely out of jumping puzzles. To me, classic retro Mario games are like playing Pac-Man: fine for nostalgia's sake, but only once every several months and only for a few minutes at a time. And the co-op? It's ultimately pointless and even a liability if you're trying to play in earnest.

1. Uncharted 2
A solid game with great graphics and some cool multiplayer options, including a few fantastic variations of co-op. Unfortunately, a lot of the single player was disappointing. As a story, it showed very little of the creative spark and personality that made the first Uncharted such a revelation. When people gush appreciatively as they do about this game's characters and story, I have to scratch my head and wonder if videogamers are ready yet for characters and story.

(Up next: 10 games of 2009 you didn't play but should have)

I really agree about Uncharted 2.  I enjoyed the first game.  I'd give it a B.  It was a solid game.  I know some had problems with it, but I thought it fun ride.  But the hype generated by its sequel, with its garnering of 10s and gushing reviews had me expecting a watershed title.  Uncharted 2 was great, but it was more of a refining of the original.  And while I enjoyed it, I just don't get the OMG GOTG hyperpole sticking to the title.

The only thing more annoying than being the sort of person who would nerd out over a top ten list is being the sort of person who tries to be anti-mainstream by being against the most popular titles like Chick does. What is there to discuss here? An individual who likes to backlash and play the contrarion. How hip.

Half of those titles are absolutely great. Which is why he put them on. To simply stir shit. And GAF and places like this fall into the trap everytime.

Understand all except Infamous.  Though, I'm starting to think I missed out on the reception because I don't remember a big fan or reviewer reaction.

and I guess Forza 3.  I got it cheap when it came out, only played the demo so far, but the demo was great.

Dude listed Infamous, dude is therefore a jilted shitclown.

Understand all except Infamous.  Though, I'm starting to think I missed out on the reception because I don't remember a big fan or reviewer reaction.

It reviewed alright (fairly, I'd say, given the rough edges) and sold alright. Why it would make this kind of list, especially when you consider that shitpile of a game that launched around the same time, is beyond me.

Tom did make two lists, 10 good things and 10 bad  things about Infamous, after which Sony canceled an interview with infamous right in his face.

This is more a reaction to gaf than anything else, but it's a shame to see people so down on FEAR 2 just because it was compared to Killzone 2 back then and again now.  fwiw, I thought FEAR 2 was as good if not better than KZ2.  I really enjoyed KZ2 for the style of shooter it is, but FEAR 2 is still more the style I enjoy.  I'll buy Wolfenstein too whenever it gets cheap if it is compared to those two.

What little I played of Wolfenstein felt really, really old. Not that I mind an old-school shooter, but that's what it is. I would have played FEAR, but KZ2 momentarily killed shooters for me. Great A.I. can only take you so far into mass slaughter of glowy eyes enemies in depressingly bleak surroundings.

yeah, infamous is quote the anomaly on this list. I also disagree with him about Uncharted 2. It was definitely not the second coming (as it was hyped and reviewed), but it refined the good stuff from the first game (which was passable) and it ended up being pretty fun.

I'm not a fan. Nearly all of his writing is that sort of writing that reads to me as if it was directed at niche message board nerds which is sort of the weakest form of writing imo. But whatever.

This is the sort of writing that is perfect for creating 20 page threads of fanboys fighting over on GAF but I don't really see the point nor do I think his analysis of the games is especially insightful. Especially since its churned out in a line or two.

The easiest thing to do in the world is nitpick or troll any game with a generic putdown.

I don't regularly read what he writes, but I feel like the overrated list is just to put the next one in perspective.  Last year the overrated one had GTA4, MGS4, LBP, etc.  While the best game list had Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, The Club, Saints Row 2, etc. and other games that were mostly ignored or got much less fanfare (and most were better, imo)

If you read fidgit, none of this is unexpected.  His opinion of UC2 is garbage, but whatever.  It's pulp.  Pulp isn't a genre known for breaking ground; it'd be an exception not a rule.  Killzone 2 he's dead-on, 'nuff said.  And Forza 3, I loved it until I didn't.  He's right about the lack of visceral feel, and that's mainly a product of the grinding progression through the seasons.  Infamous, same.  Was fun until it became repetitious; about 30 minutes.  Then you noticed the story narrative, yikes.  MW2, I don't recall many people (i.e. no one sober) effusive over the storyline.  While a few may have, finding a defense of, well, anything is as easy as laying on your stomach.

Anyway, it's Tom Chick so...:bow2  Better to read a literate guy with whom you disagree than the prostrate, sycophants embodying most of the enthusiast press.

I've posted too much in a thread I don't really care about so I'll stop after this one. For what its worth there is nothing wrong with being a contrarion or taking a critical look at some of the most popular games. There is so much fanboyism in this industry that every game (even the really good ones) deserve to be analyzed and occasionally knocked off their pedastals. If Chick had some really interesting writing to back up these lists he creates I would be down. But he doesn't. I could have predicted 7 or 8 of those games that would have been on the list because of simply who he is and what he's done in the past. Any popular or well reviewed game that came out this year could be on that list as long as the reasoning is backed up well from a logical perspective but he doesn't do that.

There are better ways to sort of critically evaluate games than he does and foster discussion and for all the talk about him being a good writer, I rarely actually see it in action. But like I said, that's just my opinion.

I'm not hating on Raiden, I used to have my own Raiden 2 cabinet, i'm just hating on him listing only 360 exclusive games.

Quote
10) Flower, Sun, and Rain
This is Suda 51's true follow-up to the unhinged creativity of the whacked out Playstation 2 cult classic Killer 7. Flower, etc. makes no sense and it doesn't have much gameplay, but it's intriguing, puzzling, and maybe even a little disturbing. It's also on the DS and easily mistaken for - oops! - something you'd buy your tween daughter.

9) Half-Minute Hero
Can a joke about other games still be a game? The funny and subversive Half-Minute Hero thinks so. Calling it "Wario Ware meets Zelda" is just the beginning.

8) Clutch
This lively and only slightly underdeveloped game is the spiritual successor to Carmageddon. It combines great driving physics with running over people (or zombies, in this case). With a solid car upgrade system, good graphics, and that same Carmageddon glee, this should have been a contender. It's also probably the worst named game of the year. "Clutch" is not a game; it's something you have to pay $300 to fix. A simple "...of the Dead" would have worked wonders, guys. (Read more here.)

7) Eufloria
I never thought a real time strategy game could be relaxing, but Eufloria proves I was wrong. It could use an AI upgrade, or better yet multiplayer support, to really shine, but it works just fine as a haunting strategy puzzle game that - don't let this scare you - makes me think of what island-hopping naval combat would be like if it was fought by magical space birds. Weird, huh?

6) Defender Chronicles
Tower defense games have been around for a while, most of them strongly resembling each other and mostly unchanged since they began as a Warcraft 3 mod many years ago. Finally here's one that stands out not necessarily for the gameplay, but for the way the gameplay is driven by an RPG system. The main drawback? It's on the iPhone where console and PC gamers can't play it. (Read more here.)

5) Swords & Soldiers
A cool splitscreen strategy game for the Wii that will appeal even to people who don't play strategy games. So I'm not going to tell you that it has everything you'd also get in a serious real time strategy game, because that would give you the wrong idea. It's played in short gratifying burst with a friend on the same couch, with whom you will later share the inside joke of proclaiming, "I luuuuv gold!" (Read more here.)

4) Wipeout HD Fury
Holy cats, who knew the creative team behind the superslick supersexy Wipeout HD still had so many great ideas in them? You haven't seen the best of sci-fi racing until you've download Fury for Wipeout HD. If it wasn't for Sony's shenanigans sticking advertisements into the game, this probably would have been on the list of my favorite games of the year. (Read more here.)

3) Gratuitous Space Battles
Last year, I wrote an article on games to help you get over the end of Battlestar Galactica. This spectacular let's-get-right-to-the-spaceships-blowing-each-other-up belongs high on that list. Come for the exploding spaceships; stay for the DIY spaceship creation.

2) Burn Zombie Burn
Action games about zombies don't have to be dumb. What looks like a two-stick shooter no more demanding than the deliciously dumb Zombie Apocalypse is actually an intricate and smart scoring puzzle. (Read more here.)

1) The Path
Games don't always have to be games as we know them. The Path, for instance, is one of the year's most memorable stories, and it's not even a story in the conventional sense, much less a videogame in the conventional sense. Think of this as six evocative character sketches about femininity, a topic relevant to everyone in the world but alien to most videogames.

Half-minute hero, Wipeout HD, and Burn Zombie Burn are all playstation exclusives. Not a single MS game on the list

Not fair, I wasn't expecting him to list PSN / XBL / Steam games, only big releases.

Wilco, exactly.  MW2 is a multiplayer game, padded by the addition of a singleplayer component.  No one bought it due to controversy (youtube reveals all) or story.  So, he's correct about the IW's puerile need for negative attention, garnered by the bunged on sp story.  But wrong to believe any sentient couch potato bought it because of some puffed-up controversy.

People bought it to nuke dudes in multiplayer.  And for that, the game can't be overrated.  Even if I've never played it  :teehee.

It'll be interesting to see where he places Ratchet & Clank and Borderlands, since he did like both quite a bit.  Or maybe they won't even rate.  Batman will be definitely be on his top list.

My only wish is that Tom would post more often on fidgit.  He's a good writer, with a skewed (relative to the other gaming sites) take on games probably owing to his former life as a seminarian.

So it's okay for everyone else but sony to have in game ads. Gotcha.

I can totally get behind Empire:TW and Plants vs. Zombies in the overrated category. I haven't played Demon Souls but I can't really buy Tom's argument there, unless the game's enthusiastic fanbase has gotten to the point that they are making it a blanket PS3 recommendation, which doesn't strike me as a good idea and would be like me telling every every PC gamer to go out and play Drakensang, Risen, or 1404 A.D., something I'd never ever do.

The only people who think Flower is overrated are people who didn't play flower or are made because it's platform exclusive.

I bought Flower when it came out, finished it and all that.  Go back to see posts where I say it's probably the most beautiful game ever, and I stick with that.  Game looks incredible.  But like Braid, it ends in an hour two and you never want to play it again cuz it's really boring.  Flower in Braid of 2009, except without some illiterate hobo begging for money.
