Wait...GT5 still doesn't have damage?

According to people with the demo off the JPN PSN store there's no car damage.

How can they defend that in light of Forza 3?

Wait for GT6!

You mean wait for GT6 Prologue, then three more years after that for GT6!

I think we'll be seeing GT6 pretty soon after the GT5 release.
Polyphony Digital took its time to create a great new engine for the Ps3. They don't have to do this again for GT6.

Some cars have damage and some don't or whatever.
Like by whole manufacturers or specific models?  You can roll over practically any ecobox or sports car in Forza 3 so that doesn't make any sense.  Is there at least still mechanical damage?

They seem to have a lot of fun making the GT games, though. I've watched a few videos of their studio and the people who are working on the game. The whole team was obsessed with cars and motorbikes. They really love making the games.

I hope the rumor is true and GT5 will have motorbikes included. WOuld be pretty good. I liked the Tourist Trophy game on Ps2.

I'm almost sure PD will release another GT game for Ps3 after GT5. But then again, you'll never know with PD...
It also took them four fucking years to release GT4 after GT3, while GT1 to GT3 were almost released annually.

I really hope they don't count cars with different paint jobs as new cars though.  There were like 8 celica's in GT3 iirc.

was reading impressions last night and people were saying this isn't so much a demo but just a time trial GT/Nissan academy or whatever type thing.  Didn't understand until I downloaded the demo that was only 201 megs.  I don't think it has a lot of other advertised features in it either.  I'm hoping a real demo comes out later on so I can at least try head tracking without buying the game because Forza 3 (which I haven't even started yet) is more than enough for a few months/years.

Tried the demo.  Driving actually feels good now and much better than in prologue.  Graphics and all that stuff still look great and the only change there is that the game manages to have a sense of speed now.  Probably will pass when it's released.

The main reason for mechanical damage is to give proper punishment for not doing clean passes or braking with walls, which is noob behavior but often the easiest way to win.  To me, it just sounds lazy if the main competition can get all the cars they want visually damaged but the series with the longer pedigree can't.

In PGR, it's WAY faster to brake by hitting the wall which is why it doesn't work as a competitive simulator.  If you want to be able to compare lap times fairly, then making sure that people don't brake along the wall or cut corners is pretty necessary.

Yeah that's my take on what's off about GT, and to a lesser extent Forza, the game feels like you are simulating driving (the act of operating a vehicle) first and racing (the act of competing and jockeying for time/position) second.  The two usually can be well integrated with each other but man GT has never seemed interested in doing it.

That pretty much sums up why PGR2 (and the entire series) is my favorite racing game.  The most important thing you ranked on is driving stylishly.  When it comes to racing, you get points for the usual drifting and all that, but you also get points for how drafting behind other cars, clean passes, etc.  It helps that it's a mix between an arcade and console sim racer, so it's fun but also not Burnout or Trackmania crazy.

The real best racing game next year is probably going to be Split/Second.

I thought you stat nerds would love the sim racing genre. Half of any decent sim racer is balancing your car's stats for maximum efficiency via a multitude of modification and vehicle options.
I dunno, I think cars are far too prosaic manly to be intriguing for your average nerd with a micromanagement hard-on. I'd much rather throw on Civ4 or something if I were feeling fastidious

Methodis is being dumb.  It's just a blind defense with jabs at the Xfag contingency.

Just think of all the ways shitty games can become great if you use that justification.

I hate to so say this, but ferarriman won the thread:

Dude, the THREAT of damage is what keeps me straight in Forza 3.

... what a coincidence, that's what keeps me straight in real life too. I'm sure PD expects us to be mature enough to not ever ATTEMPT to bump into each other.

Now shitcan this thread and methodis.

My point is Gran Turismo is a mans game, it's not a racing game like Forza. It's a driving simulator. If you can't drive a trakc and not bump into shit, then GT isn't for you. If you can't enjoy just leisurely driving your favorite car around a famous track, then this game isn't for you, and Forza is for you, since it's for the ADD audience and shitty graphic designers like modus.

that line of reasoning could make a game like Endless Ocean a "man's game", couldn't it?

I've played a few games-Live for Speed, NASCAR Racing 2003, GTR2 and other SimBin games, iRacing-that have amazing fidelity to the driving simulation and track recreation. They also at the same time never get so lost in their simulation building that they forget to be racing games at heart, and all offer the searing, edge of your seat intensity and competitive struggle that a good racing game provides.

Have you even seen professional races?  People bump into each other all the time and there's damage done, not necessarily NASCAR shit but every subtle hit can make an impact.

Anyway, I played this demo and was underwhelmed.  The cockpit view is absolutely beautiful, but the actual racing seems so...archaic after playing Forza 3.  I was also disappointed at how poor the scenery looked.

There is mechanical damage, which methodis claimed wasn't necessary, but some cars don't have cosmetic damage.  It just feels lazy and unfinished imo and I really wouldn't be all that surprised if they made some dlc damage models for some cars.

Because every single car in Forza 3 has both mechanical and physical damage, and you can fucking FLIP OVER cars.

GT5 isn't doing this and they've been working on it since the NES days.
