Is notepad the greatest program ever?
« on: December 17, 2009, 10:38:07 PM »
No bullshit formatting, easy, quick, just the right sized window.

You can program in it, take notes in it, make lists in it.  I have so many .txt files on my computer for whenever I just want to put something down for some purpose.  I love making up my own formats like coding formats when I'm writing outlines or lists.  Hell I used to write long forum posts in notepad and then C&P them into forums when I used to write longass reviews.

I think it's my favorite program of all time.

win+R, notepad (or notepad++ if I'm working on something code-related). fuckin perfection. I wish it had multi-level undo though, that's the only knock on the thing.

to answer the question; yeah, probably.

however, system restore saved my ass a couple times back in the Win 95/98 days, So I would place that pretty high as well.

PS: WMP is also pretty sweet.

notepad ++ goes on right after the video drivers in a new OS install . stock notepad is intolerable in comparison.

Kind of off topic, but I would call PKZip the greatest program ever.

If you want to sync all your notepad++ stuff in the cloud, just get dropbox and move pertinent files there.  You'll get versioning as well.  No need to carry around USB drives.

I'm with Frag - Notepad++ is the first thing I install, even before updating the video drivers. A system without Notepad++ is completely naked!

I used to be an Emacs fan but it's bugging me lately.  Anyway, I really recommend trying OneNote for note taking.  It's kinda awesome, especially 2010.

How does OneNote even work? I know I disabled the stupid agent from my work PC's startup because it was annoying and I never used it.

You have notebooks, they break down into sections and pages, you take notes in them, then you can conveniently search and hyperlink between them (it's more convenient in 2010, search is nicer and you can use wiki-like links), etc.  There are a bunch of other little features that make it nicer than keeping a lot of .txt or .doc files around, for example you can start a table just by hitting tab, it's got Word 2007's Equation Editor, when you paste something in from a web page it'll add a caption linked to the URL you got it from, it'll OCR images and let you search them, etc.
