The first album listed kind of invalidates the entire list. I can't wait until I am in position to shit on Pitchfork in a screenplay. It'll be like Garden State, but in reverse.

Baroness is the only one I know and that album kicks ass.  It is similar to Mastodon but destroys Crack the Skye.  Go pirate it. :rock

Animal Collective fucking sucks.

Honestly, it could be a lot worse (and has been in years past). Pitchfork is a bunch of self-fellating hipster cockbags, but enough good indie music was actually released this year that they accidentally had some good albums in the top 50; the top 20, especially.

The list's biggest oversight is my personal album of the year, Handsome Furs' Face Control, which was quite well-received by Pitchfork when it came out. I guess all that hipster cocaine keeps them from remembering anything that happened during the first half of the year. Hollywood has the same problem, which is why Avatar was released at the end of December - to trick people into thinking it might be worth half a shit. Sadly for Avatar, I think it will find awards to be ... unobtainiumed. :teehee

Well, it's got two genuinely good offerings in the Bon Iver ep and the latest Neko Case on the list, and it does give a nod to Major Lazer.  But Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective in the top 10?  BARF.

I don't really think this list is especially execrable, honestly. I have more complaints with the ordering than the few inclusion/exclusions calculated for the sake of hipster cred.

And fuck the Veckatimest hate. It's wayyyy to high up there, but they get kudos for finally making an album that's actually listenable

Major Lazer had a great single and an insane video, but the album itself had no real traction with me. Grizzly Bear isn't terrible but top 10 is entirely overrated.

It's always crazy to me how Pitchfork spitefully backlashes against popular opinion on the one hand and falls for their own self-made hype on the other. Well, not every one can be the Onion AV Club.

The biggest problem with this list is, as Cohen noted, the staff doesn't even talk to each other or keep lists that come out the same week consistent with each other. Basically, everybody makes their own list and then whoever has the most seniority gets their picks rated higher during the merge. Hip hipster tyrranis!

the xx made the top ten which is awesome, but I'm kinda surprised Pains of Being Pure at Heart only made #19.

Merriweather Post is just...boring.  I like My Girls somewhat, but the album as a whole is just stale.  When i think of "ALBUM OF THE FUCKING YEAR" I think of something that punches you gut and stays there, not something boring.  O well last year their pick was the same.

My Girls was a fun summer song, but all the critical spooging that the album got was really confusing. Yeah, it's Animal Collective, yeah it sounds a lot like their old stuff, it's not revolutionary jesus christ people. I remember driving to work and hearing the story they did on MPP on Morning Edition and was like "did their copy of MPP have different songs on it than mine?"

Opinions on its quality aside, when was the last time psychedelia was blended so seamlessly with electronic pop music?  Am I overlooking something crucial?

I also don't think it's much like their old stuff at all aside from a few tracks on Strawberry Jam.  It sounds very much like a new direction to my ears, or at the very least, a more focused realization of things they've done before on a smaller scale.

I don't care about music lists any more.  I know I loved Merriweather, but I guess I'm to the point where I understand people's hatred.  The rest of pitchfork's top ten is fairly atrocious.  Bromst should've been much much higher, definitely in the top ten, Bitte Orca doesn't even belong in the top 20, Veckatimest is boring, Fever Ray's album is not good, Embryonic is an awful Flaming Lips album, Girls isn't good, etc. etc.

Good to see Phoenix so high.  I like a lot of the albums in the 50s and 40s more than I like some of the top ten albums.

i liked some of the songs on mmp. infact, loved but as an album, it was almost as monotonous and painful as listening to phish, which they're slowly becoming this generations iteration of.
