i love steam. There are actually many good alternatives when it comes to digital distribution on PC, but most of them don't have the community features of steam.

as mentioned before steam is really good for a) download speeds and b) cheap games. The community/cheevs/cloud stuff is all pretty pointless though.

I still don't know how to find achievements in Steam or know what steam cloud is.

you can go to the product page in steam to look at the achievements. The Cloud stuff just means your settings/saved are all mirrored on the network w/ Steam so you don't have to worry about backing them up/moving them around to play on different machines. Note that this can be easily set up by anyone for any game using something like dropbox+ file system symbolic links.

The one thing that Steam Cloud needs to use throughout all their singleplayer-heavy games is backed up game saves and characters. See Torchlight for example. I immediately bought it when it went on sale and this went up. Let's say I'm playing Torchlight on my desktop and I get my character to level 20. All I have to do is go get on my laptop and continue playing from Steam with my same guy. No having to deal with finding my saved game and all that crap in folders and transferring it to my laptop. Steam does that for me.

It's actually no that hard. Yes it requires using the command prompt-OH NOES-but being a PC snob means I am good with computer so it's pretty easy. Also, save game file versioning rocks.
