So what's up with the continued rapeage of consolites?
« on: December 20, 2009, 10:37:38 PM »
We're used to the $50 PC game getting $60 release on PS3/X360.

But Capcom's Dark Void is upping the ante.  Console owners get to pay $60 for a PC game that is $40 (or $30).  At some point don't they have to lower the PS3/X360 prices to get closer to PC prices?  Seems kinda ridiculous that Capcom expects console owners to pay $20 more for the EXACT SAME GAME.

Isn't it because they need to pay Microsoft/Sony a fee or something?

To be fair, with consoles being the lead SKUs, PC gamers have paid for the cheaper price tag in the past year or two (gimped ports, launch issues, etc.).

... That is pretty ridiculous, though. Was anyone going to buy Dark Void to begin with?

When there is no actual demand for PC games you have to price them lower. Soon All PC games will be free. Dying platform and all.  :smug

I was planning on grabbing it since I've liked every game Capcom has published on the HD consoles.  But I think I'll wait for impressions now (instead of getting it on x360) and if the game is good & pc version is good I'll get it for PC.

I mean, the portal designer went to this dev team because she thought they were pretty talented so...maybe the game will be good?  When was the last time Capcom published a bad game that wasn't RE Darkside Chronicles?

This is the game from the Crimson Skies dudes, right? I'll get it, hopefully my new PC likes it.

When you make an Xbox 360 game you get a nearly free PC port out of it that can pretty much be converted from 360 to PC by an unpaid programming intern. Thus PC ports should usually be cheaper, unless you're Activision.

Bebpo, I find it odd that you see this as victimization of console owners rather than a boon for the remaining PC gamers. The PC game market is dying because of piracy, and publishers are responding by offering cheap games (as well as downloads, dedicated servers and what have you. On the other hand, they're mostly bare bones ports). That's not optimal, but it's better than a kick in the teeth. Obviously, it's the console versions which are subsidizing the whole enterprise at this point so they have to be full price.

Dark Void = Finally a Rocketeer game that may not suck.

This 1991 one doesn't count:

Because companies know that consolites are stupid enough to spend $60 on the shiniest new 6 hour shooter while PC gamers have refined taste and aren't fooled by flashy, yet shallow, experiences. :smug

If the PC port is cheap enough and is GFWL, it's almost worth getting both it and th 360 for double achievements. The PC version always counts separately on your gamertag.

When the PC market either pirates or waits until a game is half off on Steam, expectations of reasonable profitability is thrown out the window.

Bebpo, since you love RPGs let me explain it with a story that could be found in the games you play:

Imagine that you're a well traveled merchant (game publisher) that has come to peddle his wares (games) to a town of lepers (pc gamers). Since these lepers are poor and down trodden, most of them steal (pirates) or wait until the local market winds down and the left-overs are heavily discounted (steam users). Some even wait until nightfall to travel to the the glorious city of Console Gaming and scrounge the garbage cans for the decayed hand me downs of the upper class.

It's much easier to simply ignore these pc gamer lepers and let them wallow in their own filth but you're a kind hearted merchant and realize that these people need trade as well. Sadly they cannot afford your goods so as a noble spirit you lower the prices to their level. While you may not profit off these people, the city filled with upper class console gamers will purchase enough so you can still make a healthy profit for the month, so all is well.

Seriously though, what is the difference between this and publishers cutting deals with brick and mortar retailers a couple of years ago such that new PC games were discounted from $39.99 to $29.99 for one week right after they came out? Happened all the time, even to games that sold well. And that was in a marketplace way less competitive than the current digital one, where the lack of shelf space restrictions means games are having to compete with a lot more product in a more cost-conscientious environment.
