It was kind of obvious to everyone in the NHL thread who you were, and bishoptl reads the thread, so I always thought the mods were just letting it slide. I don't even remember what caused your first perma.

Still 50/50 for WML to pull it off long-term like EB or OA but at least Costanza took my suggestion to change the name of the non-gaming forum so it doesn't look like gimped GAF.

Sucks Wrath :(

you were spamming that on GAF or twitter? I generally stay out of the beef, and comment on it here. It's not like GAF hasn't had rough spots where people left before, but it really seems like the Rock Band fiasco started something big. GAF will survive, WYL might die, but the damage is done. And with twitter and other networking sites, it's easier for members to contact each other without fear of reprisal.

Why'd you invite him in particular?

I don't hate him, I just find his behavior ridiculous. Running a forum as big as GAF is hard, and requires some tough decisions - we can all agree on that. But a good moderator or admin is one that is rarely noticed. Evillore and others instead decide to pop in threads and arbitrarily start putting the first down, often for no reason. If I see one of them prominently in a thread, I don't post in it. It shouldn't have to be like that.

The RB thread featured a discussion. Yet instead of letting it continue, Evillore banned those who disagreed with him. Usually bans are followed by high fives from suck ups, and some of that did happen in the RB thread but for the most part people called him on the bs. If someone disagrees with the rules, their case should be heard. If they're actively breaking rules sure, ban them. Banning people for sarcastic comments is weak behavior unbecoming of a mod

Because this forum tends to be extremely negative and bitter about everything (not just GAF). Most people don't want to be around that.

Plus GAF has a reputation among gamers and is pretty well known among that crowd.

I know WHY it's big - it was there first, and developed organically. I'm asking why haven't the poor oppressed masses fled from the hellish clutches of Hitlore to EB, where they can dance naked and nobody gets murdered in the digital realm.

Because the bad parts do not impact everyone at once and whoever it impacts there is a flood of sycophants waiting "to get in on the action" in the registration queue to replace them.  It takes a few cycles of the size of the RB thread for the power of the neogaf myth to diminish and the ability to maintain member size lessens.

It's like how Pearl Jam had to release a bunch of non-commercial records in order to have concerts without a bunch of bro rockers festering at the gate. Except instead of getting No Code, we're getting Binaural's worst.

Question: why is this such a bad thing?

Why is it so hard to accept that there are people who like different games from you and get different things from games than you? If someone wants to discuss Majora's Mask for the 10000th time, or if someone hasn't even PLAYED it and wants to discuss it, why is that such a problem?

If you don't want to discuss an old game, don't go in the thread? Do you have to really read every thread on gaf?

In any case, your reply was the exact thing he was talking about.

Because this place is sort of a circle jerk. Not as much as it was in 06 and 07, but it's still a tight-knit forum in comparison to stuff like GAF, IGN, GameFAQs, /v/, etc.

Also, the more thin-skinned nerds would rather hide behind coddling moderators than post on a forum where people can freely call out their shitty taste

I have no problem accepting that at all, Himuro. I find it quite amusing that you're accusing me of not being able to exercise self-control when I don't even fucking read GAF :lol  I let everybody do whatever the fuck they want, in other words.

I'm just intrigued that despite all the bitching I hear about GAF from folks both here and IRL (which happens, when you're friends with people like DCharlie and Sho Nuff...), everyone still seems to prefer to it to somewhere that they AREN'T tightly moderated. Personally, I don't need any more than EB, king of forums :bow2

Like I said on wyl that was quoted and posted here for people to laugh at, the main reason people mostly stick with gaf is the people. When you post at gaf for years, you tend to get into a certain clique, or sub-community. And that's the main reason I post. I have an SA account and could easily just use that, as SA is a far better board. But unlike at SA, I've been posting with the same people at gaf for years. I like that. Of course, it helps that I joined gaf pre-neo gaf and that the forum was considerably smaller in size when I joined so it was easier for this to happen. Now, it's probably much harder, but I'm not a newbie so I don't get to experience it and I'm already in the gaf community.

It's the same fucking reason I joined eb to begin with: the people. I wanted to post anywhere MAF and Drinky posted.

it never feel like i did fit in the gaf crowd (probably because i tend to badmouth popular games :teehee) and this place clicked, that's all there is about it...

moderation never bothered me tough one time one mod said he was going to ban me because i linked to a site holding famitsu scans, instead of hosting them and posting them on the thread (that was before the scan ban)
that pissed me off

GAF is a great all-in-one collective news and impressions source for the lazy internet user such as myself.

I don't post there much because, as I've said before, by the time I finish reading a long thread whatever thoughts I had have usually already been posted ten times over, and I'd just be adding noise.  It's rare that I make a thread.  I do enjoy lurking, though.

As someone who was nearly 27 years old before I ever participated in an online forum, I still find the politics behind them somewhat alien.  Seems that anyone who owns or runs one eventually becomes resented to a certain degree, no matter what they do.  And I've always thought that once a member of a large forum accepts a moderator position they should be willing to step outside their usual board presence and curtail their normal posting habits, if only to avoid the temptation to use the position for final say in what would otherwise be normal thread arguments.  That diminished presence would be the sacrifice you'd make in accepting the responsibility, in other words.

I can't really make any damning judgements on board owners (other than just mock outrage for trolling purposes), though.  They pay for it and maintain it, they can do whatever the hell they want with it.  The easy solution to a member's dissatisfaction is to just not post there anymore.  It's the internet.  There are only, like, a million other message boards out there.

GAF stands on its own whereas EB is still a splinter of GAF. Most of our members, old and new, have some connection to GAF. It's basically one of the top gaming forums out there so of course we can't compete with that.

I think we have a strong, healthy userbase and I actually prefer it to the massive hordes of users at GAF. There was a time when the place's size was fine, but that tipped over ages ago. And with that came the more stricter, random mod policies.

If Amir0x is trolling Nintendo, you know you can piggy bank on him and get away with shit Dragona wouldn't stand for if she was running the thread. Then you have mods who cultivate a certain environment, like Blackace or Bish in sports threads for instance. Some mods just particulate in the discussion, like Hito or Red Scarlet. And finally you have those who dominate the tone of a thread, where any deviation could mean a ban, a mis-interpreted joke could mean a permaban.

Seems like next to no-one actually does this though. The more they profess to hate it, the more they squeal when they're banned, in fact. Like women with abusive boyfriends.

I browse GAF occasionally, but yeah, the same shit is said so many times, it's just pointless after page 1. I don't really see how it's much better than Giant Bomb or wherever for news either.

Even on EB, it's taken me a solid couple of years of reading and posting to get any kind of handle on most of the personalities. On GAF, it just seems pointless even trying to have any kind of personal interaction.

I would say there's less variety in the personalities on GAF. More people but a lot of them tend to group together and think a like.

GAF is still bigger because despite the nazi style moderation, a bigger community means more opportunity to have a good discussion.  You just have to be able to ignore all the one liners and social weirdos and distinguished mentally-challenged groupthink.  Plus, it moves faster so when someone is bored at work or looking for the news of the day, it's a better choice than most forums.  Before it got completely fucked, it was already huge so it just snowballed and is on autopilot now.  it would take something huge for people to leave all at once.  I've learned gaf is better to read than to post on.  Then I don't get suckered into arguments with douchebags.  I read the OP and leave.

I think evilbore posters are really nice and super positive.  You say a lot of people on gaf are nice, I say most posters seem disingenuous.  Part of it is that people act like they don't play video games (see Deus Ex 3 threads where people are upset that it doesn't play 100% like a 10 year old game) and the other part is having no standard for what to get excited over.  And like fistful says, you just have chunks of people that seem identical.  But the good thing is that because it's so big, there is always someone else that is interested in any minor topic brought up.  There are couple cool posters on gaf like that.  That and usually getting news is easy on gaf.
