To be honest I don't even really know what a relevant Final Fantasy game would be like. The Hardcore wants them to be like they were in the early days but that isn't going to fly anymore. And they certainly can't be like 13 was in the future.

I guess we'll see if versus ever comes out.

Easier said than done. I don't think any dev ever sets out to make a bad game (especially with their budget). But then you work at it and you end up with something completely forgettable like 13.

I really don't think they know exactly what to make anymore. I think they are both trapped by their past and also they don't know exactly how to innovate in that series anymore.

each FF is a totally different thing, and that's the problem. They always remake the systems, the customization systems, start from the ground up. Always. FF12 was a open game that allowed you to explore the world and vistas that the game hadn't even brought up yet. You could explore and do quests at your leisure. The game didn't hold your hand. The game was critically lauded. Fast forward to FF13, and it limits everything you can do, from party customization to even exploring. Two total opposites of the same coin.

They have so many teams making FF games that there is no one central vision now.

the post that emphasized lowering the importance of production values and trying to make a great game (because S-E's handheld efforts have shown they still know how to make fantastic games) and scale down budget was 100% correct.
