Sell your PS3s, it's DOA
« on: December 15, 2006, 04:01:07 PM »
My friend and former gaming faux-journalist, Carl Johnson, is a kiss of death for any console.  If he buys it and furthermore, keeps it, it is almost a lock to lose that generation and/or drive the company into bankruptcy.

This is the guy that has a Jaguar and a Dreamcast and a GameCube and 3DO and more.  His consoles are all failures.

So what did he buy last week?  A PlayStation 3.  My market analysis shows that this is the nail in the coffin for the system.

I'm surprised the 360 hasn't tanked with the Jeff Minter Support.

The fact that my friend has stayed away from the Xbox 360 bodes well for the machine.  He actually bought and sold his Wii, and almost every system he buys and sells goes on to win that gen.

Carl bought and sold a Wii?

Isn't he the same guy that worked at Nintendorks and now has a website devoted entirely to Miyamoto?

He stopped updating Miyamoto Shrine a long time ago.  The only Nintendo consoles he's kept around have been his N64 and GameCube.  YOU DO THE MATH.

He's a cancer on any console he owns.

But yeah, he bought a Wii, played it for a day and sold it for a mass profit.  Then bought a PS3.

It would take a team of psychiatrists years to fully explore all the ways this sentence is wrong.

Miyamoto Shrine was pretty hip back in the day.  They got a lot of press and were on a UK special on Miyamoto as a result.  He met Miyamoto several times, as well.  When I went to VIP areas or talked with Nintendo higher-ups, they all recognized him and the site, as well.

Carl Johnson has kind of waned as a Nintendo fanboy over the years.  But what really happened is he bought that LCD TV and he hates how the Wii looks on it and got tired of it and sold it.

I was weird about Nintendo. I didn't like them in their height of NES/SNES too much(liked Sega more) but got OBSESSED during the N64 era and stayed obsessed for most of last gen with GCN. I become a 360 fanboy soon as Nintendo has their comeback. I only like Nintendo wen they aren't doing good.

They were at their peak with the N64.  If they don't find themselves as a game developer soon, I think they're in trouble.

given its performance in europe and japan, along with what can only be described as a modest performance in na, i'd say the 360 is tanking.

Huh? Hasn't Iwata turned the company around and is ranking in more money than they have in years?

The DS has turned the company around, but Nintendo has always owned the portable market.  And even at that, the best games on the system are not made by Nintendo.  What I'm really referring to is their console business; the Wii has had a good launch, but so did the GameCube.  If they can't put quality games on that thing - it won't have much in the way of legs.

Ubi has given the wii the most support and it has pretty much all been garbage.

Strangely, it seems like EA is going to do more with the Wii (at least in the near future) than anyone else.

christ -- SOMEONE GETS IT.

it's about stamina, people.

the current wii craze is akin to prematurely ejaculating once you've entered between the thighs of the mom from married with children.

once you wake up, after consummating your long held fantasy, you realize she isn't that hot.

that's the WII effect, bitches.

btw, willco, the wii, in the face of the 360 and ps3, CAN'T compete on the software front -- because the graphics will ALWAYS be subpar.

Visuals aren't everything, though.  The PSP decimates the DS hardware-wise, but when it comes to library and future library, there's no competition.  Nintendo needs to grab into their back of tricks and find what made it work during the 64-bit era.  It's a real shame, because if they managed to put out N64 quality games on the GameCube and work harder to support third parties, that system would've been great.

I really feel like Nintendo has been churning out good-but-not-as-good-as-the-original games on all their systems since about 1997.

factoring the market they're targeted towards, the same people who purchased last gen consoles, graphics WILL matter.

these people are weighing which console to surrender hundreds of dollars for.

they're not going to spend it on a system that churns out visuals that're no better than what they received last gen.

it's not the same market as that which contains the ds and psp.

not at all.

with the games, from halo3 to gta4, the wii just can't compete.

gamers aren't stupid.

they're sophisticated, thanks in no small part to sony (imo).

they expect what their dollars will reap, and the wii just isn't bringing it.

I'm thinking the Wii will at least do pretty well for a couple of years. . .until HDTV saturation hits a higher level.

Ah good old Carl, he was supposed to get drunk with us in Leipzig at the games con but apparently lacked the funds and never showed up.
