The Guilty Pleasure thread got me thinking, I don't really listen to a lot of music. When I do hear a song I like, I don't know whether I should be guilty about listening to it because I have no frame of reference of what should be classified as "good" or "bad" or "bad, but I like it anyway" None of my friends ever really talk about music, and Evilbore doesn't talk about music very much here, and I don't read magazines or watch shows that talk about music, so I don't really know what I should be listening to until people start posting their "Top Albums of 2009" lists, and then I realize that I've only even heard of one or album/artists mentioned. Should I just get a subscription to Pitchfork and listen to whatever they say, is that how this works?

I still like most of their catalog. They've just gotten progressively worse. :'(

Owl City is pretty much the gayest music to ever find an audience.  "It's Raining Men" is less gay than Owl City.

edit: look at that album cover!  Jesus christ.

I pretty much only listen to 70's and 80's rock music. I haven't listened to modern music since I was in high school. The last new album I bought was Kid A, that's been a decade!

Not exactly the same case as you, but I used to exclusively listen to rap until a certain someone invited me to Oink and then to what.cd when Oink was shut down. Both of these sites have expanded my taste immensely (the top 100 charts alone as well as the "similar to" vectors or whatever help). I probably know less about music than most people on this board, but those sites have helped.

It really isn't music.  It is just noise that hipsters wank to or something.  If you want some :rock REAL HARD ROCK :rock I would suggest Mastodon and/or Baroness.

If the phrases "synth-driven," "pop aesthetic," "indie-pop," "songsters," "melodic pop," "melodic indie," "synth hook," "dance-fi," "twee," "swirling pop," "indie-fi," etc. are in the band's description, just run away.

I knew this thread was rhetorical. Why bother making a thread asking for advice when you're eventually just gonna do whatever you wanna do.

Nobody was recommending anything, except Iron Maiden and I already said I listened to 80's rock. When Archie recommended Mastodon, I started downloading their latest album right then.

I think Pandora or Grooveshark is your best bet. Type in some shit you like, then hit autoplay and just start tagging stuff that you like.

I found artists like Cold War Kids and Amos Lee that way.

Same with last.fm on the sexbox. Type in a band and have a computer generate what you are supposed to want to listen too.  :-*

It kinda sounds like listening to music underwater.

Blurry, a wall of incomprehensible boring sound? I've tried listening to that album many times and can barely get past the first few songs. My Girls, which I guess is supposed to be their "big" song, is completely forgettable. I figured I'd at least be able to listen to them and say "hm, there were some cool sounds here and there" but there truly aren't.
