Everything "edgy" is destined for mainstream consumption
« on: December 31, 2009, 10:23:48 PM »
I just saw a Nutrisystem Jumpstart commercial with Don Shula and Dan Marino as pitchman. The music in the ad was a modified version of House of Pain's, "Jump Around".

That's the weirdest thing I've seen since that Tide commerical that uses the Digable planets tune "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)..."

My question then is how long before I start hearing Ice Cube's "No Vaseline" in a commercial?

I thought mainstream consumption was moving away from edgy and embracing the soft, effete Web 2.0 type of feel.  Which explains things like the Walmart logo change.

yep, seems like every subversive counter-cultural thing the kids flock to eventually gets co-opted.  Yesterday's cool experimental electronic track is tomorrow's duracell commercial.

This is nowhere near London Calling and Fortunate Son being used to sell cars and jeans, respectively.

Yeah, God forbid the impeccable creative values of the Cartoon Network be subverted by crass commercialism.

It could be worse. Cartoon Network has been adopting internet memes for it's commercials. It disgusts me because now everyone will use internet memes to sell shit.

they've always catered to the late teens/20-something crowd with this kind of stuff on adultswim.

I thought Jump Around was always mainstream. According to Wikipedia:

Quote
his song became a smash hit in 1992, reaching #3 in the U.S.A. 1993 re-release of the song in the UK, where the original had been a minor hit, peaked at #8. On VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s, "Jump Around" was featured at position 24. It was number 66 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop. The song is popular among dance hall DJs and is widely regarded in the UK as a club classic. Blender's 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born listed it at number 325.

    * Jump Around" was included in the films Mrs. Doubtfire, Happy Gilmore and Black Hawk Down. The song was performed on the final season of Kids Incorporated.

    * The song was often covered by the nu metal group Limp Bizkit during live performances, as House of Pain member DJ Lethal joined Limp Bizkit after House of Pain disbanded.

    * Lethal Bizzle covered the song while performing at the Download Festival in 2008. Vanilla Ice covered the song on his album Vanilla Ice Is Back!

    * The song is played during the last five minutes of the third period at every Miami RedHawks home hockey game. It is also played at every University of Wisconsin home football game at the end of the third quarter. During the song, the fans are encouraged to stand on their seats and jump up and down. The University of Wisconsin used the song before the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who plays it at every home basketball game before the tip off where fans jump at their seats and, more recently, the non-starting players dance on the sideline. It was also played for a Bridgestone Tires commercial during Super Bowl XLIII. In various NBA arenas, the song is played while the teams are preparing for a jump ball. In Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim incorporate the song as an accompaniment to the Rally Monkey jumping up and down on the stadium's video board, encouraging the fans in attendance to make noise in the hopes of rallying the Angels from a losing score.

I mean, when you've been covered by Limp Bizkit and Vanilla Ice, a Tide commercial is a relatively small step.

what, you wanted me to discuss something with you ???

okay, fine.  All kinds of memes have been in the media for a while now.  Stuff like anonymous/4chan/ED has blown up since the scientology protests.  The New York Times has had pieces about well-known trolls/hackers like weev.  People's parents know how to use bittorrent.  I don't know, there are a lot of examples.  Things like IRC and usenet won't show up in a wal-mart commercial, but I think a lot of what goes on on the internet is fairly well understood by a lot of people.

Internet memes have been on mainstream media for more than a decade now.

It makes sense that we see more of them because more and more people are in tune to that kind of thing since people use the internet now for more things than AOL Instant Messenger and porn.  Plus in the world of reality TV, rehashing memes is more acceptable than when it was more sitcom driven.
